PEO coatings obtained on an Mg-Mn type alloy under unipolar and bipolar modes in silicate-containing electrolytes

Protective surface layers with high corrosion resistance (R_p = 3.3·105 ohm cm²) and significant microhardness (H = 4.8 GPa), as compared to the substrate material, were obtained on MA8 magnesium alloy by bipolar Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) in a silicate-fluoride electrolyte. The phase and elemental composition and morphology of the coatings were investigated. It was found that the application of the bipolar PEO mode enables one to synthesise on the alloy's surface a high-temperature phase of magnesium silicate, forsterite (Mg₂SiO₄) having good anticorrosion and mechanical properties.     

Anticorrosion performance of polyaniline nanostructures on mild steel

Different one-dimensional nanostructured polyanilines were synthesized in sulfuric acid solutions by conventional polymerization, interfacial polymerization and direct mixed reaction, respectively. The products were characterized with SEM, UV–vis and FTIR and the anticorrosion performance of products on mild steel were studied using electrochemical measurement in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. Results showed that the polyaniline nanofibers synthesized by direct mixed reaction have uniform morphology with diameters of 60–100 nm and more excellent protective properties than conventional aggregated polyaniline. Comparative studies revealed that the nanostructure and morphology of polyaniline could influence its anticorrosion performance.

A New Ceramic Substrate Glaze with High Resistance to Molten Aluminum

Corrosion resistance of ceramic substrate glazes to molten aluminum was studied in this paper. The glazes can spread slightly in aluminum alloy according to SEM examination of solidified interface between the glazes and aluminum alloy. The components of B2O3-P2O5 glazes were not detected with electron probe at the side of aluminum alloy near the interface, but the components of boron-free glaze were detected. It is shown that borophosphate glazes can resist the corrosion of molten aluminum.
