Combined treatment for children with learning disorders.

The causes of learning disorders are numerous and, although some learning difficulties can be remedied by special educative measures only, many such problems, especially when they are more severe represent a disorder of the total personality. In such a case a diagnosis must be established by a team of different specialists. After a careful evaluation a treatment programme is planned and a choice is made among various specific therapies. Very often the treatment of learning disorders must take into account more or less important emotional factors. A combined approach of psychotherapy and remedial teaching is sometimes essential to attain some success in helping a child. Such a combination of treatments requires close cooperation between psychotherapist and special teacher. Their respective roles have to be frequently clarified and both gain in understanding of the child needs through mutual communication. Following the evolution of a child from two points of view demonstrates more and more clearly how the intellectual processes necessary for learning are subject to inhibiting patterns that are observed in neurotic defense mechanisms against emotional conflicts. In some instances this practical knowledge would be necessary to understand why a child does not profit from remedial measures and to determine how new techniques are to be used to help him. Quo Vadis, Research Education?

I read with chagrin Donald T. Campbell's (see record 1990-55812-001) comments on my article on the preparation of researchers in psychology. In "Thesis-Antithesis" (American Psychologist, 1966, 21, 781-787; see record 1967-00924-001), I examined some hidden assumptions upon which the thesis requirement rests and attempted to bring into relationship recent ideas in epistemology with earlier recommendations of the Education and Training Board. I suggested that if the future face of psychological investigations is to be more like search and less like research, we shall have to recapture and invest with meaning the personal qualities in the advisory relationship, often lost sight of under the pressure of academic requirements. I claimed that some degree requirements discourage the personal and professional evolution of the future generation of researchers. Campbell's criticism that I recommended the substitution of research assistantships for the thesis requirement leaves me feeling like the guest in a famous restaurant. The waiter wished to know how the guest would like his tournedos bordelaise. "A center cut and tenderloin portion, by all means, quite well done on the outside, then slightly pink, and, finally, seigneuse in the middle, not a very large portion, just right, with some gently braised mushrooms on the side, and only a touch of sauce," said the guest. The place of design in the training of professional engineers and managers

To be successful a commercial engineering enterprise must harmonize the different organizational functions: marketing, finance, design, procurement and manufacture.Of these, design is the least understood and often has too little influence in the corporate decision-making circle.This paper suggests that the activities of design and general management have much in common, and that realization of this would go far towards achieving proper balance of the top management team.     

A restatement and test of Schlosberg's theory of emotion with two kinds of subjects from Greece.

Schlosberg's dimensional theory of emotion, including the dimension of tension-sleep, is tested to compare results obtained previously with American college students with those obtained in this study using Greek Ss. 15 Greek villagers and 15 college students in Athens comprised the 2 experimental groups which differed from each other in educational level and in lifetime movie attendance. The data indicate that Schlosberg's conclusions are now valid for non-Western groups as well as Western. Furthermore an emotion solid can be plotted from data collected by making use of Schlosberg's procedure, but the shape of the solid is not the same as that previously presented by Schlosberg. 18 references.
