Optical amplifiers for video distribution

The promise of a broadband fibre communications network has attracted the interest of CATV and Telco concerns. Various networks and topologies have been discussed. Cost is a drawback in some of the proposed networks, particularly those networks which require switching. This paper discusses a low cost broadcast tree and branch network which uses optical amplifiers to extend the network penetration. Recent work in the development of optical amplifiers suggests that the Erbium fibre amplifier may be compatible with VSB-AM. The characteristics of such an amplifier will be discussed. This scenario allows an orderly transition from the present-day AM backbone system to the tree and branch fibre architecture. Once the broadband fibre plant is in place new services can be implemented that exploit the broadband nature of fibre.

Realization of a 450 mhz cable tv system compatible with existing networks

This paper describes the realization in West Germany of a 450 MHz cable TV system, which matches into the infrastructure already formed by the existing 300 MHz systems. The studies and developments done to achieve this are described, and the results of a field trial detailed. Finally the impact of the new MAC standard is discussed.

Modular framework support for context-aware mobile cinema

In this paper we describe a novel approach for interactive cinema based on context-aware narration using handheld computers. The paper describes both the artistic approach and the ubiquitous computing framework developed to realize the scenario. This framework has been used in various projects, including the described video production course at the ISNM, where five interactive cinema concepts have been developed and shown during a public demonstration. In our approach, a new type of user experience has been established by placing the viewer inside the movie’s physical locations during playback. Moreover, the developed ubiquitous computing framework provides a foundation for future work in the area of ad-hoc, service-oriented Ubicomp scenarios.     

宽屏幕彩电中的压缩技术

对现有１６：９宽屏幕彩电在接收４：３宽高比图像出现的水平失真现象，提出了一种实用的数字压缩技术，将亮度信号（Ｙ）、二个色差信号（Ｒ－Ｙ、Ｂ－Ｙ）进行数字化处理，按一定规则在存贮器中实现对信号的存取，实现图像在时间轴上的压缩，解决了图像的水平失真问题．文中在理论分析的基础上给出了实用的电路原理图．
