One Hundred Years of Social Psychology Quantitatively Described.

This article compiles results from a century of social psychological research, more than 25,000 studies of 8 million people. A large number of social psychological conclusions are listed alongside meta-analytic information about the magnitude and variability of the corresponding effects. References to 322 meta-analyses of social psychological phenomena are presented, as well as statistical effect-size summaries. Analyses reveal that social psychological effects typically yield a value of r equal to .21 and that, in the typical research literature, effects vary from study to study in ways that produce a standard deviation in r of .15. Hemispheric contributions to nonverbal abstract reasoning and problem solving.

Hemispheric involvement in reasoning abilities has been debated for some time, and it remains unclear whether the right hemisphere's involvement in problem solving is modality specific or dependent on the type of spatial reasoning required. In the current study, 2 types of nonverbal reasoning abilities were examined, spatial reasoning and proportional reasoning, in 109 patients with cerebrovascular disease that was confined to either the right or the left hemisphere or was diffuse in nature. Results indicated that no lateralizing effects were present based on type of spatial reasoning. Findings are consistent with the suggestion that higher order cognitive processes involved in nonverbal abstraction and problem solving are not strongly lateralized to the right hemisphere but rather are more generally distributed throughout the cortex. 采用丙烯酸酯聚氨酯和二苯甲酮/安息香乙醚复合光敏剂,对该体系紫外光固化反应的凝胶生成动力学进行分析。用红外光谱定量测定光聚合过程的变化,发现光聚合反应主要是以双键打开,交联为特征的,并得出1408cm~(-1)双键吸收峰随光照时间而变化的关系式:P_(c=c)=0.325 t~(0.135)。临界凝胶点可由双键反应程度与凝胶分数之间关系外推得到,凝胶点后,体系中存在一个凝胶与溶胶之间分配关系,此时凝胶与溶胶共存,凝胶中双键反应程度P_(A(g))>总双键反应程度P_A>溶胶中双键反应程度P_(A(S))。随着凝胶增加,P_A和P_(A(g))逐渐上升,而P_(A(s))下降。此体系的紫外固化实验工作曲线与理论值基本一致。

以引入竞争为标志的电信领域改革以来，在竞争环境下如何实现作为原有垄断经营者政治使用命的普遍服务，成了世界各国政府，企业，学术界及国际电信机构共同关注的重大问题，我国是个发展中国家，电信的普通服务远没有完成。因此在借鉴国外经验的基础上，研究和探讨竞争环境下实现普遍服务的政策和策略具有十分现实的意义。     

Have it your way and mine: The theory of styles

Olsen is right to note what can be done with a good theory and the right machine. His particular theory, however, is not transferable to literary studies. If we need a new model, I would suggest that cognitive science can provide a few interesting ones. I have begun to do some work based on David Marr's VISION, in which he hypothesizes two levels of processing within the visual module. My speculation has been on the parallel existence of distinguishable levels of conceptual or language organization which would correspond to the viewer and object centered perspectives Marr describes for vision. I propose to explore the possibility that we may find here the model for the existence of stylistic individualism within overarching historical stylistic generalizations, and even more, that this may be what feminists are searching for when they try to resist being coopted by the masculine language of objectivity. Ellen Spolsky teaches English literature and literary theory and is the Director of the Lechter Institute for Literary Research at Bar-Ilan University, Israel.
