The cellular origin of dysiherbaine, a marine-sponge toxin, was investigated immunohistochemically by using an anti-dysiherbaine antibody. Dysiherbaine-like immunoreactivity was found to be localized in spherical cells harbored in the sponge mesohyl. A combination of ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) analysis and cell-morphology analysis revealed that the spherical cells were Synechocystis cyanobacteria. However, the sponge, identified as Lendenfeldia chondrodes on the basis of its rDNA sequence, appeared to contain two different chemotypes--dysiherbaine-producing (DH+) and nondysiherbaine-producing (DH-)--both of which inhabited the same region. Synechocystis cells in the DH- sponge were not labeled with antibody, although the 16S rDNA gene profile of the cyanobacteria in the DH- sponge was indistinguishable from that of the cyanobacteria in the DH+ sponge. On the basis of these results, we hypothesize that dysiherbaine is a metabolite of certain varieties of endosymbiotic Synechocystis sp.  相似文献

In laboratory olfactometer bioassays, females of two hymenopteran parasitoid species, Roptrocerus xylophagorum (Ratzeburg) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) and Spathius pallidus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), were attracted to odors from bark or bolts of loblolly pine, Pinus taeda L., colonized by bluestain fungi (genus Ophiostoma) associated with the parasitoids' bark beetle hosts. Mock-inoculated bolts and bark were less attractive or unattractive in these bioassays. Bark infested with host larvae that lacked their fungal and other normal microbial associates was attractive to R. xylophagorum females, but was less so than bark infested with larvae possessing their normal complement of associated microbes. In contrast, in oviposition bioassays, R. xylophagorum females spent approximately equal time searching, made similar numbers of oviposition attempts, parasitized similar percentages of hosts, and laid similar numbers of eggs in bark fragments infested with either associate-free or associate-bearing host larvae. Furthermore, in field bioassays using bluestain-inoculated or mock-inoculated loblolly pine bolts as sources of attractants, the numbers of parasitoids attracted by the two treatments did not differ significantly and the two treatments were less attractive than bolts naturally infested with bark beetle larvae. Whereas our laboratory olfactometer data suggest that bark beetle fungal associates may enhance attraction of some parasitoids, our bioassays with associate-free hosts indicate that associate-produced are not required for short-range host location and parasitization. In addition, our field trials indicated that long-range attraction of parasitoids to the host-fungi-tree complex is not caused simply by an interaction between bluestain fungi and tree tissues.  相似文献

In ant gardens of lowland Amazonia, parabiotic ant speciesCamponotus femoratus andCrematogaster cf.limata parabiotica cultivate a taxonomically diverse group of epiphytic plants, whose establishment is restricted to arboreal carton ant nests. Epiphyte seeds are collected by workers ofCa. femoratus, the larger of the two ants, and stored unharmed in brood chambers where they subsequently germinate. Although seeds of some ant-garden epiphytes bear nutritional rewards, previous studies have shown that these rewards are not sufficient to explain the pattern of ant attraction to seeds. Five aromatic compounds occur frequently in and on the seeds of most ant-garden epiphytes and may be chemical cues by which ants recognize propagules of their symbiotic plants. The most widely distributed of these is methyl 6-methylsalicylate [6-MMS]1, previously reported as a major mandibular gland product in relatedCamponotus species and present in trace quantities inCa. femoratus males. (–)-Citronellol6 (previously unreported inCamponotus) was the principal volatile constituent in extracts of male heads, and (–)-mellein7 was present in small quantities. Discovery of 6-MMS inside the mandibular glands of maleCa. femoratus (and its presence in analogous glands of related ants) offers preliminary support for Ule's (1906) hypothesis that seeds attract ants by mimicking ant brood. In addition, the likely fungistatic activity of seed compounds suggests that they could retard microbial pathogens of ants and plants in the organic detritus of nest gardens. While the presence of identical seed compounds in so many unrelated plant lineages might represent a remarkable case of convergent evolution, other interpretations are possible.  相似文献

Synapses are stable adhesive domains between two neighbouring cells of the multicellular organisms which serve for cell–cell communication as well as for information processing and storing. The synaptic concept was developed over more than 100 years specifically for neuronal cell–cell communication. In the last ten years, this concept was adapted to embrace other cell–cell communication phenomena. Here, we focus on the recently emerged phagocytic synapse and propose new endosymbiotic synapses and “intracellular organellar synapses”. All these synapses of eukaryotic cells are in a good position to explain the high capacity of eukaryotic cells for integration of diverse signalling inputs into coherent cellular behaviour.  相似文献

Catalytic centers in selective (allylic) oxidation and ammoxidation catalysts are multimetallic and multifunctional. In the historically important bismuth molybdates, used for propylene (amm)oxidation, they are composed of (Bi3+)(Mo6+)2 complexes in which the Bi3+ site is associated with the -H abstraction and the (Mo6+)2 site with the propylene chemisorption and O or NH insertion. An updated reaction mechanism is presented. In the Mo–V–Nb–Te–O x systems, three crystalline phases (orthorhombic Mo7.5V1.5NbTeO29, pseudohexagonal Mo6Te2VO20, and monoclinic TeMo5O16) were identified, with the orthorhombic phase being the most important one for propane (amm)oxidation. Its active centers contain all necessary key catalytic elements (2V5+/Mo6+, 1V4+/Mo5+, 2Mo6+/Mo5+, 2Te4+) for this reaction wherein a V5+ surface site (V5+ = O 4+V–O) is associated with paraffin activation, a Te4+ site with -H abstraction once the olefin has formed, and a (Mo6+)2 site with the NH insertion. Four Nb5+ centers, each surrounded by five molybdenum octahedra, stabilize and structurally isolate the catalytically active centers from each other (site isolation), thereby leading to high selectivity of the desired acrylonitrile product. A detailed reaction mechanism of propane ammoxidation to acrylonitrile is proposed. Combinatorial methodology identified the nominal composition Mo0.6V0.187Te0.14Nb0.085O x for maximum acrylonitrile yield from propane, 61.8% (86% conversion, 72% selectivity at 420 °C). We propose that this system, composed of 60% Mo7.5V1.5NbTeO29, 40% Mo6Te2VO20, and trace TeMo5O16, functions with a combination of compositional pinning of the optimum orthorhombic Mo7.5V1.5±x Nby Tez O29± phase and symbiotic mop-up of olefin intermediates through phase cooperation. Under mild reaction conditions, a single optimum orthorhombic composition might suffice as the catalyst; under demanding conditions this symbiosis is additionally required. Improvements in catalyst performance could be attained by further optimization of the elemental distributions at the active catalytic center of Mo7.5V1.5NbTeO29, by promoter/modifier substitutions, and incorporation of compatible cocatalytic phases (preferably epitaxially matched). High-throughput methods will greatly accelerate the rational catalyst design processes.  相似文献
