Security procedures for program libraries

As computer programming has become more complex, management has become more concerned about its own ability to exercise appropriate control over the programmer.This paper describes an implementation of procedures, libraries, and separation of duties to improve security in programming. This implementation helps to limit scope, reveal programmer intent and fix accountability. It assumes and supports such improved programming technologies as top-down design, structured programming, psuedo-code documentation, use of librarians, inspections, and “walk-throughs”.While the implementation described here will contribute to security, it is not sufficient. Management will wish to consider the application of many other measures.     

Writing algorithms in algol 60

This paper discusses the difficulties of writing procedures and programs in ALGOL 60 for general use. It also shows how the problems can be alleviated and overcome.     

Convention Handouts.

Documentation and the management of a software project—a case study

The purpose of this article is to discuss documentation and management technique in a software production project. It is claimed that clear and concise documentation is a major contribution to communication between people who are either inside or outside the software project and that such documentation plays an important role in the management of the project. A university software project is used as a case study to illustrate the above points and to describe the means for achieving them. This project developed a supervisor and an assembler for a small 4K words machine and at various times it involved up to ten parttime people (instructor and students). One of the goals of the project was the development and improvement of documentation technique, and the techniques described in this article were practised and improved as the project progressed. It is felt that with minor changes the conclusions of the university project can be used in industrial projects of similar size.     

SOFTLIB — a documentation management system

This paper describes a software sysem (SOFTLIB) that has been developed to assist in the management of software documentation generated during systems development projects. It provides facilities to manage large numbers of documents, to file documents when they are complete and to issue them to system developers and maintainers. It also includes an information retrieval facility that allows programming staff to find documents, to examine their contents before issue and to assess the state of the software project documentation. SOFTLIB is explicitly intended to help manage the documentation generated during software development — it is not designed for use by end-users of that software or for managing end-user documentation. The novel characteristic of this system is the approach that is taken to the consistency and completeness of documentation. The documentation associated with a software system is organized in such a way that it may be detected if document sets are complete (that is, if all documentation which should be provided for a software component is available) and if document sets are likely to be inconsistent. This means that if a document has been changed without a comparable change being made to other associated documents, this is detectable by the librarian system. In addition, a subsidiary aim of our work was to investigate the utility of menu systems to complex software tools by building a user interface to SOFTLIB. We conclude that menu systems are far from ideal in such situations because of the range of possible options which must be handled by the system.     

ARCADE — An architecture for CAD in electronics

Ever since the introduction of computers in development and engineering departments, design activities have been supported by computer methods in a growing number of design functions, in the interest of reducing development time and cost, and increasing the quality of the products. Computer Aided Design (CAD) — a generic term for these computerized tools — is recognized as a method for drastically reducing the development time of industrial products.CAD methods are currently being used during each of the various phases in the development activity. The introduction of these CAD tools for the various stages in the development cycle, however, was to a large extent effected in isolation, i.e. not as a “subset” of an overall concept. Lack of such a concept, with its inherent disciplines and compatibility aspects, has given rise to sub-optimal efficiency and effectivity. To remedy this situation, a generalized architecture for CAD has been developed. This architecture drastically reduced the large variety if input methods, combines all product data in one well-structured product file, supports all necessary design functions, assures the proper generation of technical documents, and above all, facilitates maximum efficiency by integrating the processes for various stages in the development cycle.The essentials of ARCADE will be described in this article, together with how the system is designed.The “ARCADE” way and method of working in an organization in which development, engineering, manufacturing, logistic and documentation departments are concerned with technical automation issues will, as such, be discussed.Benefits will, of course, also be elucidated.
