Towards mechanical characterization of biomolecules by MNEMS tools

Single‐molecule micromanipulations have provided information that has been awaited for a long time. However, these experiments relying on optical tweezers (OT) or magnetic tweezers (MT) have a low throughput since the molecular preparation is done one at a time. In order to move towards systematic biological or medical analysis, micro‐nano‐electromechanical systems (MNEMS) are the appropriate devices, as they integrate accurate molecular level engineering tools and can be cheaply produced with highly parallel fabrication processes. This paper investigates the ability of MNEMS tweezers to perform molecular manipulations. The mechanical forces relevant in biological interactions are first reviewed and compared to the performances of biophysical instruments. MNEMS tweezers are then presented. The tweezers integrate opposing sharp tips to capture the molecules, an actuator to stretch them and a displacement sensor to measure in real time the produced molecular extension. DNA molecular bundles are readily assembled and manipulated. The sensor provides a 0.3‐nm stretching resolution, equivalent to the interbase pair distance in double‐stranded DNA. Object manipulation and motion perception: Evidence of an influence of action planning on visual processing.

In 3 experiments, the authors investigated the bidirectional coupling of perception and action in the context of object manipulations and motion perception. Participants prepared to grasp an X-shaped object along one of its 2 diagonals and to rotate it in a clockwise- or a counterclockwise direction. Action execution had to be delayed until the appearance of a visual go signal, which induced an apparent rotational motion in either a clockwise- or a counterclockwise direction. Stimulus detection was faster when the direction of the induced apparent motion was consistent with the direction of the concurrently intended manual object rotation. Responses to action-consistent motions were also faster when the participants prepared the manipulation actions but signaled their stimulus detections with another motor effector (i.e., with a foot response). Taken together, the present study demonstrates a motor-visual priming effect of prepared object manipulations on visual motion perception, indicating a bidirectional functional link between action and perception beyond object-related visuomotor associations. SPOCS: Application Specific Signal Processor for OFDM Communication Systems

This paper presents an Application-Specific Signal Processor (ASSP) for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) Communication Systems, called SPOCS. The instruction set and its architecture are specially designed for OFDM systems, such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), scrambling/descrambling, puncturing, convolutional encoding, interleaving/deinterleaving, etc. SPOCS employs the optimized Data Processing Unit (DPU) to support the proposed instructions and the FFT Address Generation Unit (FAGU) to automatically calculate input/output data addresses. In addition, the proposed Bit Manipulation Unit (BMU) supports efficient bit manipulation operations. SPOCS has been synthesized using the SEC 0.18 μm standard cell library and has a much smaller area than commercial DSP chips. SPOCS can reduce the number of clock cycles over 8%~53% for FFT and about 48%~84% for scrambling, convolutional encoding and interleaving compared with existing DSP chips. SPOCS can support various OFDM communication standards, such as Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T), etc.
