On principal component analysis, cosine and Euclidean measures in information retrieval

Clustering groups document objects represented as vectors. An extensive vector space may cause obstacles to applying these methods. Therefore, the vector space was reduced with principal component analysis (PCA). The conventional cosine measure is not the only choice with PCA, which involves the mean-correction of data. Since mean-correction changes the location of the origin, the angles between the document vectors also change. To avoid this, we used a connection between the cosine measure and the Euclidean distance in association with PCA, and grounded searching on the latter. We applied the single and complete linkage and Ward clustering to Finnish documents utilizing their relevance assessment as a new feature. After the normalization of the data PCA was run and relevant documents were clustered.

In this paper, we show a Jensen type inequality for the Sugeno integral. We also discuss some conditions assuring the satisfaction of opposite inequality (reverse Jensen inequality).     

A novel document similarity measure based on earth mover’s distance

In this paper we propose a novel measure based on the earth mover’s distance (EMD) to evaluate document similarity by allowing many-to-many matching between subtopics. First, each document is decomposed into a set of subtopics, and then the EMD is employed to evaluate the similarity between two sets of subtopics for two documents by solving the transportation problem. The proposed measure is an improvement of the previous OM-based measure, which allows only one-to-one matching between subtopics. Experiments have been performed on the TDT3 dataset to evaluate existing similarity measures and the results show that the EMD-based measure outperforms the optimal matching (OM) based measure and all other measures. In addition to the TextTiling algorithm, the sentence clustering algorithm is adopted for document decomposition, and the experimental results show that the proposed EMD-based measure does not rely on the document decomposition algorithm and thus it is more robust than the OM-based measure.

This paper presents some comments on the above paper regarding the manipulation of Gaussian fuzzy sets and provides two useful generalized formulas for both of similarity and similarity/possibility relationships of Gaussian fuzzy sets with different widths.     

The S-kernel: A measure of symmetry of objects

In this paper we introduce a new symmetry feature named “symmetry kernel” (SK) to support a measure of symmetry. Given any symmetry transform S, SK of a pattern P is the maximal included symmetric sub-set of P for all directions and shifts. We provide a first algorithm to exhibit this kernel where the centre of symmetry is assumed to be the centre of mass. Then we prove that, in any direction, the optimal axis corresponds to the maximal correlation of a pattern with its symmetric version. That leads to a second algorithm. The associated symmetry measure is a modified difference between the respective surfaces of a pattern and its kernel. A series of experiments supports the actual algorithm validation.

Maintenance of the undersea section of the Seikan Tunnel

This paper introduces the results of measurements made over a period of 14 years after the Seikan Tunnel was opened for service. Because this tunnel is a very long undersea tunnel with the length of 54 km, the necessity of clarifying the long-term behavior of the tunnel structure was recognized from the start. Various measurements are made to survey the condition of the ground and lining concrete and data thus obtained are used to assess the soundness of the tunnel structure. Judging from the data thus far obtained, the tunnel structure appears to remain in a good condition.
