Local received knowledge once ensured buildings had a strong connection with their environment and the surrounding community. With rapid urbanisation and the professionalisation of design and construction, architects working internationally with a finely attuned sensibility to place and context have been able to take up the baton and take the opportunity to develop notions of locality and identity. For the last two decades, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture has been recognising the contribution of design teams that have been responsible for producing exceptional architecture for Islamic communities worldwide. Here, the award scheme's director, Farrokh Derakshani , defines some key treatments of identity in architecture. 相似文献

Philips Intellectual Property & Standards (IP&S) decided in 2001 to start a search department in Bangalore to cope with an increasing amount of novelty searches and as a more attractive alternative to outsourcing. Bangalore was chosen for the availability of a Philips infrastructure, well educated people and a comfortable cost level. Supported by the efforts of the existing staff, the WON/GO training and a mature management system, a stable well performing search department is now in place. 相似文献

The current trends of urban dynamics in the Third World are alarming with regard to climate change, because they are giving an increasingly important role to cars—to the detriment of public and non-motorized transportation. Yet this is the type of energy consumption that is expected to grow the fastest, in business-as-usual scenarios. How can these market-based urban trends be influenced? What level of emissions reduction can be achieved? This article shows that first, there is a relevant and urgent need to tackle the urban dynamics of cities in developing countries focusing on the “transport–land uses” couple, and second, that existing transport technologies and decision-helping tools are already available to take up the climate change challenge. Through the application of an integrated “transport–land uses” model, TRANUS, this study demonstrates that transit technologies affordable to an emerging city like Bangalore can significantly curb the trajectories of energy consumption and the ensuing carbon dioxide emissions, if and only if they are implemented in the framework of appropriate urban planning. Furthermore, this study establishes that there are tools which are available to facilitate the necessary policy-making processes. These tools allow stakeholders to discuss different political alternatives integrating energy issues, based on quantitative assessments. 相似文献

Kiran Venkatesh, as co-founder of InFORM Architects, faces head-on what he describes as paradigm shifts in the social and cultural patterns of India, and it is this that informs his architecture. Unlike the overall trend of arbitrary and whimsical responses, his sharply profiled and modulated forms continue to investigate such shifts as well as their spatial manifestation. Fabian Ostner represents a new transnational practice triggered by the experimental and international environment at Auroville which attracts architects from all over the world. Trained in Germany, and having worked in Berlin and Mumbai, Ostner now runs his practice from the former French colony of Pondicherry, a city in south India close to both Auroville and Chennai. He cites the reason for his architectural domicile in India as the charter of Auroville, in its striving to represent a bridge between past and present and, ultimately, human unity. Ostner focuses on bridging traditional building culture with a modern approach to architecture that is often conveyed by his compelling projective images. The work of Sanjay Mohe, a former director with the firm of Chandavarkar and Thacker, represents the architectural ethos of Bangalore that mediates between a modulated Modernism and the contingencies of the city's specificities. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

The first architectural firm in Bangalore, founded in 1947 by Narayan Chandavarkar, Chandavarkar and Thacker is currently under the directorship of Prem Chandavarkar and Sai Shankar Bharatan. Continuing the collaborative nature of the practice during its many reorganisations over the years, Prem Chandavarkar has also given the firm a new intellectual edge by confronting Bangalore's new urbanity, and as such is a role model for many younger-generation architects. The practice's current work represents thoughtful and reflective responses as architecture finds itself at a critical juncture in this city of a euphoric present. With the practice's 60-year history, Chandavarkar is particularly aware of the humility and ‘backgroundness’ that once characterised the culture of the city in contrast to the present voluble environment. He has written (including in his essay in this issue) about the nature of practice and production, and has argued why a critical and self-reflexive practice needs to be the order of the day. Chandavarkar and Thacker speak of an ‘aesthetics of absorption’ and a ‘negotiated practice’, both of which should inform a much needed criticality of the exuberant conditions today. ‘A building does not convey meaning as much as it slowly absorbs it,’ declares the practice, and so the test of a building is not the initial impression of its spectacular presentation, but the accrued experiences and memories of its everyday inhabitation. In their understanding of culture as an active and ongoing phenomenon, and hence one not yet susceptible to definition, the architects bring an open-endedness to their own practice. The result is an avoidance of a predetermined language of expression, and thus the variety of spatial, volumetric, site and technofunctional responses, in their array of works.
