Association between mental health and fall injury in Canadian immigrants and non-immigrants

The study was to determine the association between mental health and the incidence of injury among Canadian immigrants and non-immigrants. We used data from 15,405 individuals aged 12 years or more, who were living in British Columbia, Canada, and participated in the 2007–2008 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). We calculated a 12-month cumulative incidence of fall injury based on self-reporting. Logistic regression model was used to examine the association of the 12-month cumulative incidence of fall injury with immigration status and mental health before and after adjustment for covariates. The results show that self-reported mood and anxiety disorders were significantly associated with an increased incidence of fall injury. The adjusted odds ratios were 1.81 (95% CI: 1.37, 2.38) for mood disorder and 1.55 (95% CI: 1.12, 2.13) for anxiety disorder. Immigrant status was a significant effect modifier for the association between mental health and fall injury, with stronger associations in immigrants than in non-immigrants especially in elderly people. People with poor self perceived health were more likely to have a fall injury. Both mental health and general health were related to fall injury. There was a stronger association between mental health and fall injury in immigrants compared with non-immigrants in the elderly. More attention should be paid to mental health in immigrants associated with fall injury.     

Eyewitness Identification: Guidelines and Recommendations for Identification Procedures in the United States and in Canada.

Innocent people are convicted each year because of mistaken eyewitness identification. This paper addresses both historical and more contemporary perspectives on the possible limitations of eyewitness identification. The primary purpose of this article is to describe some of the attempts made to protect the fact-finding process from misidentifications. The development and nature of guidelines and recommendations for the design and administration of identification lineups in the United States and in Canada are described. Behavioral science at work for Canada: National Research Council laboratories.

The National Research Council is Canada's principal research and development agency. Its 20 institutes are structured to address interdisciplinary problems for industrial sectors, and to provide the necessary scientific infrastructure, such as the national science library. Behavioural scientists are active in five institutes: Biological Sciences, Biodiagnostics, Aerospace, Information Technology, and Construction. Research topics include basic cellular neuroscience, brain function, human factors in the cockpit, human-computer interaction, emergency evacuation, and indoor environment effects on occupants. Working in collaboration with NRC colleagues and with researchers from universities and industry, NRC behavioural scientists develop knowledge, designs, and applications that put technology to work for people, designed with people in mind. 为维护投资者的合法权益 ,保障矿业融资市场的公平、公正 ,制定和完善矿业上市信息披露的法律法规 ,已经成为各矿业大国的普遍做法。自 1997年“布桑事件”后 ,加拿大证券管理机构即着手制定了相关的国家法规 ,并于 2 0 0 1年正式实施 ,取得了显著实效 ,受到矿业界广泛认同。本文着重介绍加拿大该项法规的制定过程、特点、主要内容以及目前的地位和作用 ,希望为我国矿产资源储量管理及矿业上市管理提供有益的借鉴。     

Transformative change: energy-efficiency and social housing retrofits in Canadian cities

The article provides the first comparative assessment of the energy-efficiency retrofit programs in social housing of the largest cities in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta, focusing on program efficiency and effectiveness. The analytical framework explores key policy instruments – regulatory, fiscal and institutional – in relation to major results achieved. In terms of efficiency, the grant programs were highly relevant, timely and successful in meeting their objectives generating improvements in two-thirds of the social housing in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. The effectiveness was moderate, with targeted approaches to retrofits, integrating both mechanical and building envelope measures with high potential for energy savings. One of the greatest challenges was the high cost of the program, the lack of sustainability in funding and and the cost recovery of comprehensive retrofits..

考察加拿大城市桥梁建设及相关启示

本文系统地介绍了笔者在加拿大考察期间,对渥太华、蒙特利尔、多伦多和温哥华等地的城市桥梁建设的总体印象和分类考察情况。其中,阐述了加拿大在城市桥梁建设上体现传统与创新的成功经验,并介绍了其在城市古老和近代桥梁、城市大跨径桥梁和其它现代城市桥梁的建设情况。笔者希望为国内同行提供有借鉴意义的资料和相关启示,以期促进我国城市桥梁建设的健康发展。     

Storytelling,Group Dynamics,and Professional Cultures: Lessons from a Focus Group Study

The social context within focus groups affects the types of stories told, and who tells them. Serendipitous findings from a focus group study in Atlantic Canada revealed different storytelling styles among various types of professionals. While recreation staff told positive stories of community engagement and personal stories of transformation, planners narrated tales of political struggle and professional frustration. The findings offer lessons about learning from research failures and demonstrate the potential utility of focus groups as a setting for research on storytelling. By illuminating differences in professional cultures, the analysis suggests that effectively managed focus groups may provide a useful venue for facilitating deliberate and reflective practice.
