A pedagogical problem growing out of virtual classrooms is the temptation to act without communal accountability, the reciprocal commitment among individuals to maintain the health of their interconnections. Drawing on an ethnographic study of a fully online composition class, I argue that teachers can encourage accountability within virtual sites by conceiving of the online classroom as an emergent phenomenon. The relationships and activities among language, physical reality, and interpretant provide the matrix out of which place organizes itself. This ecological orientation provides local and systemic strategies for fostering communal health. I begin my exploration of online place by describing the value of complex systems theory and emergence for conceptualizing place. Next, I describe the roles of language, physical reality, and interpretant, pointing out the contribution of each to the configuration of virtual place and to communal accountability. Then, I focus on the emergence of place, which reorganizes language, reality, and interpretant, opening up a new dimension to communal accountability. 相似文献

Iron powder has previously been demonstrated to be a potential dry cleansing agent for oiled feathers, whereby both the oil ad(b)sorbing particles and the contaminant may be harvested magnetically. Previous studies on feather clusters have only been able to achieve 97.4% removal. While impressive, this is not considered to be entirely satisfactory for wildlife rehabilitation in practice. Reported in this Technical Note is a series of experiments designed to establish whether a grade of iron powder can be identified that is capable of achieving 100% removal and to identify those characteristics responsible for such improvement. To this end, the abilities of nine different grades of iron powder to remove four different contaminants (three crude oils and a crude oil/seawater emulsion) from feather clusters have been compared, as have the relative physical characteristics of the different iron powders. It has been established that the efficiency of remediation is indeed related to certain physical attributes of the particles (the “grade”). Specifically, a spongy superfine iron powder has been identified that is capable of achieving 100% removal (within experimental error) for all four contaminants tested. Abstract This paper describes a case study where a distributed learning model was used to enhance the traditional teaching of a freshwater ecology practical class by providing students with a student-centred constructivist environment. Prior to the practical session, a website was created and students were encouraged to think about the morphological adaptations of stream organisms. They were then divided into groups and taken to a real stream to collect specimens and bring them back to the laboratory for further examination and discussion. After the practical, each student group was required to produce a web page concerning the adaptations of the stream organisms to answer a set of online tutorial questions, and to participate in web-based discussion. Feedback by questionnaire showed that the great majority of students enjoyed working with the website and found the content very useful. More than half of the students preferred this type of web-assisted, student-centred practical to conventional practicals, while about a third showed no special preference between the two approaches. 相似文献

An important set of challenges for eScience initiatives and digital libraries concern the need to provide scientists with
the ability to access data from multiple sources. This paper argues that an analysis of scientists‘ reuse of data prior to
the advent of eScience can illuminate the requirements and design of digital libraries and cyberinfrastructure. As part of
a larger study on data sharing and reuse, I investigated the processes by which ecologists locate data that were initially
collected by others. Ecological data are unusually complex and present daunting problems of interpretation and analysis that
must be considered in the design of cyberinfrastructure. The ecologists that I interviewed found ways to overcome many of
these difficulties. One part of my results shows that ecologists use formal and informal knowledge that they have gained through
disciplinary training and through their own data-gathering experiences to help them overcome hurdles related to finding, acquiring,
and validating data collected by others. A second part of my findings reveals that ecologists rely on formal notions of scientific
practice that emphasize objectivity to justify the methods they use to collect data for reuse. I discuss the implications
of these findings for digital libraries and eScience initiatives. 相似文献

本文针对科尔沁沙地黑沙蒿人工植被土壤线虫的总数、群落组成、营养类群进行了研究。结果表明,随着黑沙蒿种植年限的增加,土壤线虫数量显著增加。不同年限黑沙蒿植被之间土壤线虫总数差异显著(P<0.01)。在本研究中共获得线虫13科19属,其中Acrobeles为优势属。在半流动沙丘生态系统中,植物寄生线虫为优势营养类群;而在黑沙蒿人工植被生态系统中,线虫群落逐渐向以食细菌线虫占优势的方向演替。本实验结果表明,土壤线虫群落结构对退化沙漠生态系统的恢复阶段具有很好的生物指示作用。 相似文献
