Mathematical models of style have focused on features which are easily quantifiable and, for computer-aided analysis, easily identifiable by machines. Most such studies are based on frequency of occurrence of word counts, vocabulary items, or grammatical forms.In this paper, we examine not the number of occurrences of a characteristic, but the pattern in which the characteristic occurs. For example, we hypothesize that the lengths of successive sentences are mathematically correlated and that the length of a sentence can be described, quantitatively, in terms of the lengths of previous sentences.Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models are traditionally used to describe correlated time series data. Under the assumption that the number of words in one sentence is correlated with the number of words per sentence in prior sentences, we develop ARIMA models for series in different works by the same author and comparable works by different authors (James Joyce: portions of Ulysses, and Dubliners; and Ernest Hemingway: portions of In Our Time). Problems of sampling from a literary text are discussed and results presented.Although the performance of the models in predicting sentence length is only marginally better than using mean sentence length, the potential value of this technique in characterizing stylistic features, especially changes in style from the beginning of a piece to the end, is demonstrated.Rosa Oppenheim is an associate professor of Quantitative Methods at the Graduate School of Management, Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey. 相似文献

Through an analysis of the various roles of narrative in the life and work of famed conservationist Ernest C. Oberholtzer (1884–1977), we explore the relations between life (as evolving autobiographical narrative), place identity, and environmental planning, and the place of literary and artistic discourses in the processes of mutual articulation one can observe there. We investigate the role of writing in his work and life, and the functions of narratives in a broader sense, and argue that Oberholtzer's remarkable identification with a self-created place narrative, and his exceptional narrative fluidity, both in autobiographical sense and in other communicative situations, made him not only an exquisite wilderness advocate but also a rich source of insights into the narrative nature of environmental planning. 相似文献

The Advanced Virtual and Technological Architecture Research Laboratory (AVATAR) was founded in 2004 at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (UCL). With Neil Spiller's appointment in September 2011 as Dean of the School of Architecture and Construction at the University of Greenwich, the centre of research has shifted south to Greenwich. Ernest Rutherford and Francis Aston were born a world apart but both would become two of the most influential physicists of their time. Their separate training, under the direction of J.J. Thomson at the Cavendish Laboratory, shaped their future and allowed both men to develop and apply their considerable skills in experimental physics. It also catalyzed their careers and ultimately led to each receiving a Nobel Prize. Although they had very different characters, Rutherford and Aston became close colleagues and confidants who spent considerable time together within the confines of the Cavendish Laboratory, at Trinity College, and elsewhere in Cambridge. They also traveled the world in company, usually as part of a group or British delegation of scientists attending conferences and meetings overseas. This article parallels the lives of the two men. It describes how they came to work at the Cavendish, their scientific accomplishments and accolades, and their activities and interactions away from the laboratory. 相似文献
