Ion beam induced interface mixing of Ni on PTFE bilayer system studied by quadrupole mass analysis and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis

We have investigated interfacial chemistry in a 100 nm Ni on PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) bilayer system induced by 120 MeV Au ions with fluences varying from 1 × 10¹² to 5 × 10¹³ ions/cm². In-situ quadrupole mass analysis (QMA) shows emission of Fluorine (F) and different fluorocarbons (C_xF_y) such as CF, CF₃, C₂F₃ etc. during irradiation. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) studies show that Ni reacts with chemically reactive species such as F⁻/F and C_xF_y ions or radicals emitted during irradiation forming NiF₂ and metal-polymer complexes (-CFNi-). Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) was used to analyze the atomic transport at the interface and strong interface mixing is observed at the ion fluence 5 × 10¹³ ions/cm². Atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies before and after irradiation show that surface roughness is increased from 6.9 to 12.4 nm with increasing fluence. Observed results have been explained on the basis of the chemical reactions taking place within molten ion tracks in the polymer and hot zones around the ion paths created in the Ni film. The studies show that swift heavy ion irradiation introduces strong chemical alteration in the system and induces chemical reactions within the ion track, which enhance ion beam mixing in Ni-PTFE bilayer systems.

Sparse matrix vector multiplication techniques on the IBM 3090 VF

This article demonstrates the benefits of applying Fortran programming techniques based on outer loop vectorization and the multiply-and-add compound instruction to the implementation of several sparse matrix vector multiplication algorithms on the IBM 3090 VF. The discussed algorithms use the scalar and vector ITPACK storage schemes and some variants of them. Their performance is analysed by comparing the execution rates and the storage requirements for several test matrices from the Harwell-Boeing collection.     

Evaluation of a high‐volume,low‐latency market data processing system implemented with IBM middleware

A stock market data processing system that can handle high data volumes at low latencies is critical to market makers. Such systems play a critical role in algorithmic trading, risk analysis, market surveillance, and many other related areas. The current systems tend to use specialized software and custom processors. We show that such a system can be built with general‐purpose middleware and run on commodity hardware. The middleware we use is IBM System S which includes transport technology from IBM WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging (LLM). Our performance evaluation consists of two parts. First, we determined the effectiveness of each system optimization that the hardware and software infrastructure makes available. These optimizations were implemented at all software levels—application, middleware, and operating system. Second, we evaluated our system on different hardware platforms. IBM7535工业机器人控制器的改进

文章针对IMB7535机器人控制系统进行了改进,运用具有开放特征的“IPC＋运动控制卡”的体系结构作为控制器的改进方案;设计了机器人控制系统的硬件和软件的结构组成。详细阐述了基于PMAC—PC和PLC-839两种开放式运动控制卡的控制系统硬件装置的构建过程。经过实验,验证改进后的控制器工作可靠,具有较高的开放性。     

IBM's data security strategy: Some implementation aspects

Security of resources, in particular data security, ought to be the continuous concern of any company: an effective security is a matter of vital importance. This paper discusses some implementation aspects of IBM's security strategy, which aims at providing methods for the selective protection of assets against unauthorized or accidental disclosure, modification or destruction. The practical implementation of this security strategy takes the form of a yearly operating plan. One of the items covered in such a plan is the audit or review of functions and installations. Where audits and reviews are formally defined processes, peer reviews are an informal but very effective method of establishing a satisfactory measure of compliance with security requirements.     

Bayesian parameter inference for individual-based models using a Particle Markov Chain Monte Carlo method

Parameter estimation for agent-based and individual-based models (ABMs/IBMs) is often performed by manual tuning and model uncertainty assessment is often ignored. Bayesian inference can jointly address these issues. However, due to high computational requirements of these models and technical difficulties in applying Bayesian inference to stochastic models, the exploration of its application to ABMs/IBMs has just started. We demonstrate the feasibility of Bayesian inference for ABMs/IBMs with a Particle Markov Chain Monte Carlo (PMCMC) algorithm developed for state-space models. The algorithm profits from the model's hidden Markov structure by jointly estimating system states and the marginal likelihood of the parameters using time-series observations. The PMCMC algorithm performed well when tested on a simple predator-prey IBM using artificial observation data. Hence, it offers the possibility for Bayesian inference for ABMs/IBMs. This can yield additional insights into model behaviour and uncertainty and extend the usefulness of ABMs/IBMs in ecological and environmental research.
