FORECASTING TIME SERIES:A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ALTERNATIVE CLASSES OF TIME SERIES MODELS

Abstract. Performance of the state dependent model developed by Priestley is evaluated relative to that of bilinear and standard linear models using two well-known time series. The results indicate the use of broader classes of time series models beyond the conventional ARMA class is likely to lead to significant reductions in forecasting error. However, there are difficult problems relating to the identification of the order of the model, estimation of the parameters, and determination of the correct nonlinear model.     

Graphical program to display a testbed block diagram with real-time data on an IBM personal computer

A graphical program called TESTBED was written in Pascal in summer 1985 for NASA Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio. TESTBED displays on an IBM Personal Computer/XT a block diagram of the DC testbed for the power management and distribution system for the space station. When the testbed, which will contain photovoltaic arrays, batteries, and loads, is deployed in the field, it will be permanently connected to the IBM PC/XT via direct memory access. Sensors attached to the testbed in the field will continually collect and updata data in real time. The program will superimpose the real-time data on the block diagram of the testbed displayed on the screen of the IBM PC/XT. The program uses procedures contained in Metawindow, a software package of graphics utilities written by Metagraphics Corp., Mountain View, California.     

Productivity and errors in two keying tasks: A field study.

Productivity and error rates were measured for a billion responses by more than a thoushand operators of IBM card punches and bank proof machines in 20 different installations. Productivity increases and errors decrease during the 1st year on the job, sometimes longer. Experienced card punch operators average 56,000 to 83,000 keystrokes per day with 1600 to 4300 strokes per undetected error. Experienced bank proof machine operators average 4350 to 6600 checks per day with about 3500 checks per undetected error. The fastest operators at any installation produce twice as much as the slowest. The least accurate operators make 10 times as many errors as the most accurate. Installing an ASP system

This article describes the installation of an ASP System on 3 × 360/65 computers at Rolls Royce Limited. It shows the benefits from controlling the total resources of the computers from a central point and the secondary benefits from the additional ASP facilities. The installation plan is described and indicates that factors taken into account when changing over to ASP. These factors required a team of highly skilled people working for several months and many modifications to the basic ASP System The article concludes with a practical assessment of the final system.

Integration engineering is the process of creating a coherent system from its component parts, both hardware and software, such that at each stage of integration the evolving system exhibits increased functional capability, while remaining under firm intellectual control. Integration is a major managerial, technical, and logistical task, requiring the combined efforts of people skilled in system engineering, hardware engineering, software engineering, and integration engineering. In large systems software may be the principal integrating element. This paper discusses integration engineering approaches including a software—first strategy, simulation approaches, and an incremental release strategy as well as a project example.
