Technology watch in the construction sector: why and how?

‘Technology watch’, like ‘innovation’, is a process term. Large corporations in high-tech industries use technology watch regularly to facilitate the adoption of innovations, where it is associated with parallel ‘watch’ activities in social, legal and environmental areas. The information (yielded by technology watch) is either unrefined or refined to give it added value for decision making. The technology watch process involves steps of collection, analysis and dissemination, implicating a watch team and domain experts. In small and medium enterprises (SMEs), particularly in the construction sector, special problems arise because of the lack of interest in innovation and because of the shortage of resources, suggesting the creation of ‘relay stations’ in the technology watch process. Current changes in the organization of the construction process, however, are changing the industry's structure, suggesting that there may be a new need for the kinds of information that technology watch can provide. e Veille technologique f comme e innovation f sont des termes de processus. Dans le secteur des industries de pointe, les grandes entreprises font régulièrement appel à la veille technologique pour faciliter l'adoption d'innovations, associant ainsi les activités de veille aux domains social, juridique et environnemental. Les informations qui découlent de la veille technologique peuvent être brutes ou affinées afin de leur donner une valeur ajoutée qui sera particulièrement utile lors de la prise de décisions. La veille technologique consiste à recueillir, analyser et diffuser des données - ce qui implique un travail d'équipe et le recours à des experts. Dans les PME, notamment dans le secteur de la construction, surgissent des problèmes particuliers du fait du manque d'intérêt pour l'innovation et de la pénurie des ressources; cete situation suggère la création de stations-relais dans le processus de veille technologique. Actuellement on observe des changements dans l'organisation des processus de construction qui modifient la structure de cette industrie ; il est possible que cette nouvelle donne suscite un nouveau besoin pour le type d'information que la veille technologique peut fournir.

在分析了动态企业联盟对ＡＳＣＭＳ需求的基础上，提出了系统建模与仿真、计划与控制模式及过程管理是建立ＡＳＣＭＳ的关键问题，给出关键问题的解决方案及ＡＳ－ＣＭＳ的结构与功能。ＡＳＣＭＳ将为有铲地组建动态企业联盟和快速响应市场提供有力的支持。

QOS evaluation model for a campus-wide network: an alternative approach focussing on availability

This paper discusses a model for evaluating the quality of service (QOS) of a campus-wide network. The main goal is to achieve a mathematical model that can be applied to any network, providing its availability. The network where it will be tested has more than 5000 nodes with SNMP managed network devices.The model discards the classical approach to QOS that considers parameters such as delay or jitter. Instead, we evaluate quality as a function of the availability indexes for either the services or the network itself.Once the model is described, we will explain how it has been implemented at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Campus network and the requirements––software and hardware––to install such a system in any network.

Business Continuity Management: A Standards-Based Approach

ABSTRACT

Business enterprises are increasingly realizing the importance of business continuity management (BCM). Availability BS 25999 Standard has facilitated a consistent methodology that organizations can follow in designing their BCM System. This paper intends to provide a conceptual understanding of BCM right from BCM Policy to BCM maturity by describing the steps involved in the implementation of BCM Standard – BS 25999 – to ensure business continuity in the event of an outage. The key BCM tasks have been categorized into three phases of business continuity – Pre-event Preparation, Event Management, and Post-event Continuity. This paper also highlights some of the challenges experienced by the author in carrying out Risk Assessment and Business Impact Analysis. The Business Continuity Maturity Model® of Virtual Corporation is provided (with their permission) as a tool to strengthen business continuity maturity or organizations.

The role of multi-tenure reserve networks in improving reserve design and connectivity

Multi-tenure reserve networks aim to connect areas managed for biodiversity conservation across public and private land. This paper seeks to determine to what extent multi-tenure reserve networks improve the reserve design and connectivity of the public protected area estate, using three networks in southeastern Australia as case studies. Network configuration varied considerably and those networks with generally larger parcels tended to be better connected. On average, public land components were larger than private land components in all networks. Two networks had 18 components physically adjoining other network components while another had only 6 components adjoining. Importantly for two of the networks, the average distance between the nearest neighbouring component was significantly less than average distances between public protected areas in the subregion. Thus these multi-tenure reserve networks acted to enhance the existing public protected area estate by increasing the potential linkages in the landscape and therefore the viability of individual public protected areas.
