Mathematics and Design:Yes, But Will it Fly?

Martin Davis and Matt Insall discuss a quote by Richard W. Hamming about the physical effect of Lebesgue and Riemann integrals and whether it made a difference whether one or the other was used, for example, in the design of an airplane. The gist of Hamming’s quote was that the fine points of mathematical analysis are not relevant to engineering considerations.

Standardising Heterogeneity: Public Housing and the Absent(ed) Architect

Does the decentralisation of housing provision by government necessarily lead to a less standardised and more diverse approach to design and planning? Can targeted financial programmes effectively trigger the forces of the free market to deliver more innovative and varied solutions to housing? Michael Bell , Professor of Architecture at Columbia University in New York, reviews the impact of the introduction of tax credits and other initiatives, brought in to encourage public/private partnerships and the involvement of speculative developers in the 1980s and 1990s, on the quality of public housing in the US. In doing so, he puts out a call to architects to acquaint and engage themselves with the complexities of the financial markets.     

Ageing in Suburbia: Designing for Demographic Change in Australia and New Zealand

In the next half-century, Australia's population of people aged over 65 is set to almost double. As a consequence, there is an urgent need in both Australia and New Zealand, where older people value their independence, for housing that fully supports them in their own suburban homes. With only a handful of models in place, Mark Taylor , Professor of Architecture at the University of Newcastle, Australia, and Laurie Buys , a Professor in the School of Design at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, have tracked down some promising precedents for suburban living in adapted homes and within community-based shared housing.     

Wanted: Challenging Design Ideas for Ageing

In 2012-13, the Design Research Institute (DRI) at the RMIT University in Melbourne hosted a Design Challenge on ageing. For the institute, which is based around trans-disciplinary design research, the challenge provides a unique opportunity to introduce a rigorous framework and focus to its activities. Katherine Wilkinson , the Senior Manager of the DRI and initiator of the annual Design Challenge, describes how students, designers and experts from industry, business and the community were brought together by the issue of ageing to generate innovative ideas and solutions.
