Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Practice of Psychology: Charles Silverstein.

The American Psychological Foundation (APF) Gold Medal Awards recognize distinguished and enduring records of accomplishment in four areas of psychology: the application of psychology, the practice of psychology, psychology in the public interest, and the science of psychology. The 2011 recipient of the Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Practice of Psychology is Charles Silverstein. Dorothy W. The Grand Work of Fiction: The Detail as Narrative

A practising architect and Professor at the University of Virginia School of Architecture, Edward Ford is the leading expert on the architectural detail and the author of three seminal books on the subject. Here Ford explains that, though the decision ‘to abstract or to articulate’ architecture ‘may be largely subconscious’, it is never ‘arbitrary’. For ‘in the well-designed building, it is done in the service of the creation of a larger narrative, a unity of vision’.     

Fibrous Tectonics

Living nature is characterised by ubiquitous and all-pervading diversity. Over the course of evolution, highly differentiated and infinitely varied systems have emerged in biology. Given the vast range of natural variation, it may come as a surprise that almost all load-bearing biological structures are fibrous composites. Guest-Editor Achim Menges , Director of the Institute for Computational Design (ICD), and Jan Knippers , Director of the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE), both at the University of Stuttgart, have conducted several research projects exploring how the principles of biological fibre systems can be transferred to architecture. Based on advanced design computation, simulation and robotic fabrication, these explorations not only open up a new approach to fibre-reinforced composite structures, but also enable the discovery of novel fibrous tectonics.     

New Observations on a Geological Hotspot Track: Excursions in Madeira and Porto Santo (1825) by Mrs T. Edward Bowdich

This paper works with the modern concept of the geological hotspot track – the building processes and movements of volcanic island chains – applied strategically to one of its illustrative formations, the Madeira Archipelago. By analogy, however, the concept works equally well to describe the important early 19th‐century scientific knowledge‐building activity that produced Charles Lyell's On the Geology of Some Parts of Madeira (1854). A central section of the paper uncovers the contributions to knowledge of this geology before Lyell's, and in particular, Excursions of Madeira and Porto Santo (1825) by Mr [sic] T. Edward Bowdich. A thorough examination of this text then constitutes an important case study for literal and figurative investigation of geological hotspot tracks. The main argument proposed is that current specialist research forgets its submerged and longer histories to its detriment. Insights contained in older information often supply reminders of the key questions and contributions from the past that provide checks and balances for further developments of a field. By promoting multi‐level, multi‐stranded and multi‐lingual investigation of the history of 19th‐century geology in Madeira before Lyell ( 1854 ) as central to hotspot track research, this paper marks nodal conditions that constitute advancement in critical knowledge‐building within and outside the discipline of geology.     

A linear programming procedure based on de la Vallée Poussin's minimax estimation procedure

It is shown that de la Vallée Poussin's 1911 procedure for the solution of linear minimax estimation problems can be adjusted to solve a class of linear programming problems. A general procedure of this type should have been accessible in the 1910s, but the historical record shows that no such procedure was developed before the work of Kantorovich, Koopmans, and Dantzig in the 1940s.

His professional achievements include diplomate status in clinical and assessment psychology and recognition as a Distinguished Practitioner of the National Academies of Practice.
