Identifying the critical risks in underground rail international construction joint ventures: Case study of Singapore

Since the 1980s, Singapore has experienced the widespread use of international construction joint ventures (ICJVs), which are associated with a variety of risks. This study aims to assess the risks associated with the underground rail ICJVs in Singapore. To achieve this objective, a comprehensive literature review was carried out and a questionnaire survey was conducted with 33 contractors. The survey results reported “disagreement on some conditions in contract” as the most critical risk. Although the risk criticalities of some risks significantly differed according to multiple company characteristics, there was strong agreement on the risk rankings. With the help of this study, ICJV partners can identify the most critical risks and thus develop mitigation measures. Also, the findings from this study provide a comprehensive picture of risks for the companies that intend to participate in ICJVs in Singapore.

Abstract

When news of the assassination of Mohandas Gandhi circulated through New Delhi on 30 January 1948, Margaret Bourke-White, one of Life magazine's premier photographers, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, then a comparatively unknown French photojournalist, raced to Birla House, where the event occurred. Both understood the journalistic imperative of photographing Gandhi's body. Because of their different philosophical and technical approaches to photography, they responded to the challenge in different ways and produced very different results. This study compares their ideas, approaches, and results. It also offers a case study of one of Cartier-Bresson' s most important news reportages.¹     

苏里格地区天然气勘探新进展

苏里格地区位于鄂尔多斯盆地西北部,勘探面积约4×10⁴ km²。该区地表条件复杂、地震信噪比低,储层岩性复杂、非均质性较强,气层有效厚度较薄、单井产量低,勘探难度较大。近年来,中国石油长庆油田公司通过深化地质综合研究及勘探技术攻关,明确了苏里格气田有效储层分布和天然气富集规律,创新形成了地震有效储层预测、复杂气层测井评价、致密砂岩储层改造等先进适用的勘探技术。勘探目标从砂体预测转向有效储层与含气性预测,通过整体勘探,探明了我国第一个超万亿立方米储量的整装大气田,探明天然气地质储量规模达2.85×10¹²m³,同时在苏里格南部地区形成了新的资源接替区。预计2015年以前,苏里格地区的天然气储量规模可超过3.5×10¹²m³,天然气年产量将达到230×10⁸ m³。     

Risk assessment of China-Pakistan Fiber Optic Project (CPFOP) in the light of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM)

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is considered as an excellent breakthrough for improving the economic and security situation in the region. The estimated worth of CPEC is 62$ billion which is comprising of 49 developmental projects. China-Pakistan Fiber Optic Project (CPFOP) is one of the core projects among these, which will deliver safe route of voice traffic between both countries. CPFOP is greatly beneficial in terms of enhanced security and revenue generation. Currently, Pakistan’s international connectivity is via submarine cables. CPFOP will provide an alternative route for international telecom traffic and also assist in achieving the rapidly growing internet traffic demand in Pakistan. It is estimated that 17 million people will get benefit from this project. However, every project has some undesirable impacts. The aim of this research paper is twofold; 1st to trace out the pros and cons of CPFOP. 2ndly, performing a risk assessment of CPFOP by using Fuzzy VIKOR technique. This approach will help in prioritizing a list of failure modes of Fiber Optic Cable (FOC). Lastly, this paper will help authorities for optimizing and safeguarding national interest in the wake of CPFOP.     

New dyes containing the 1,3-benzodithiole residue

The synthesis of various compounds containing the 1,3-benzodithiole residue is reported. The compounds are examined for application as functional dyes for carbonless duplicating systems and are found to develop slowly on silica gel, and to have good fastness to light. Especially useful was 1,1-bis(p-dimethylaminophenyl)-2-(1',3'-benzodithiol-2'-yl)ethylene (5), which developed blue on silica gel; the developing rate and fastness properties of this derivative are compared with those of benzoyl leuco Methylene Blue.
