Developing Leg‐Motion Measurement System Using Acceleration Sensors

The purpose of this study was to develop a new system for measuring leg motions using a portable three‐dimensional accelerometer applied to five positions of a lumbar vertebra, and left and right lower limbs. The measuring system was composed of acceleration sensors, harnesses of which resin material for a subject was removed, a portable data logger with a Bluetooth module mounted, a personal computer, a software for both monitoring and evaluating signals from the acceleration sensors, and a Web camera. The portable data logger had the ability to simultaneously sample the data of maximal 24 signals. The average acceleration measured during the walk was related to the score of Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence and that of Fall Risk Assessment Score Sheet. Thus, the new system for measuring leg motions using a portable three‐dimensional accelerometer seems to be a useful tool to estimate the fall risk during the walk.

A Field of Possibilities: The Post-Oil Future of Bahrain

Much of the continuing urban development of the Gulf region rests on the oil economy. What happens, though, when the oil runs out? What is the alternative model? Bahrain is already facing the depletion of the oil that supported its rapid growth. Noura Al Sayeh , the Head of Architectural Affairs at the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Bahrain, highlights how architecture might be developed to generate new urban forms that are economically viable and environmentally sustainable.     

日本都城历史发展及其规划建设

历史上日本都城规划建设和发展演化有着自身特点，文章通过一些史实案例的介绍，澄清了人们有关日本都城规划建设的一些习惯看法。     

The built environment of Japanese shopping streets as visual information on pedestrian vibrancy

Twenty shopping streets in Tokyo, Japan, were analyzed based on pedestrian vibrancy and visual information by assessing physical dimensions, objects, shops and quantity of pedestrians and walking speeds. Field survey recorded 12-h periods of a typical weekday by tracking daily variations between July 3rd to August 3rd, 2017 and October 13th to November 10th, 2018. For analysis, Hierarchical Cluster and Discriminant Analyses were performed using the statistical software, SPSS v.24. The study classifies four clusters of shopping streets accordingly to pedestrian vibrancy as eccentric, with large street dimensions and big retailing shops; strong, with variety of specialized daily life stores, balanced, with lower specialized daily life stores, closer residential area and moderate numbers of flower pots; and weakened, with very few shops, residential predominance and higher numbers of flower pots. Findings indicate that larger street dimensions together with specialization of shops, rather than variety or number, are prone to slow walking speeds and larger numbers of people. Also, it was noticeable the connection of number of flower pots with proximity of residential areas. It could be theorized that pedestrian vibrancy correlates inversely to the proximity of residential areas. The closer residential area is the lowest pedestrian vibrancy would be.

Hugh Campbell expands upon the mutually collaborative spatial qualities evoked in the photographic works of Walter Niedermayr and the architecture of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of Tokyo-based practice SANAA. Describing their relation as forming a ‘thickened presence’, he alludes to a particular atmosphere reliant on an ambiguity of scale, detail and discernible proximity that serves to liberate the architecture and the photographs from mere documentation whereby instead they figure as transparent recordings of spatial intentions. Colour and constitution of thiophene and thiazole azo dyes: application of CNDO/S and PPP methods

The electronic absorption spectra of a series of thiophene and thiazole azo dyes have been calculated by the CNDO/S method with inclusion of the 3d atomic orbitals on the sulphur atom and by the PPP method. The results calculated by the two methods consistently suggested that the orders of bathochromic effect of the diazo and coupling are as follows.
