Efforts to limit CO2emissions from buildings in the tropics either focus on reducing energy demand, i.e., air-conditioning, or on replacing fossil with renewable sources. The link between energy demand and supply is often overlooked, especially the effect of the temperature lift of air-conditioning systems on energy consumption. But while heat and humidity gains define energy demand, operating temperatures of the system define the necessary energy input. We aim to transfer our experience of using the LowEx paradigm for heat pump systems in moderate climates to the tropical climate of Singapore. In this paper, we took a systematic overview of a range of heat sinks, to which we refer to as anergy sinks. We analysed their thermal properties and their effect on the performance of air-conditioning systems, expressed as COP. The predominantly used dry air-cooled condenser units performed worst, especially when subject to a stack effect in (semi-)confined spaces. The performance is highest for cooling towers using the wet bulb temperature followed by water body based anergy sinks and the soil. The wide spread of results confirms that the heat rejection temperature is a decisive factor for the performance of the overall cooling system and the input of primary energy. 相似文献

Transmittance of a tubular cover collector has been calculated for a particular orientation. Tilt of the collector is optimised for the four typical days (two equinoxes and two solstices) at Delhi and Madras, a high and low latitude station respectively. Only the two nearest neighbouring tube elements are considered, in order to take into account the shadowing effect. In the present system, where the thickness of the tube and the flat glass sheets, has been taken to be the same, the transmittance of the tubular cover has been found to be comparitively less than that of a cover formed by two parallel sheets of window glass. However, because of its cylindrical geometry, very thin glass tubes can be used for all practical purposes, thereby, increasing the transmittance to a great extent. It has also been concluded that for all tubular covers including this system, hour angle instead of angle of incidence is an exact parameter to study the variation of effective transmittance. The difference in the mode of variation of transmittance with hour angle in the present system, with that in case of tubular collector, is attributed to the variation of average angle of incidence (local) with hour angle. 相似文献

Tectona grandis and Gmelina arborea are common in commercial reforestation in the tropics. However, color variations, moisture content, and drying defects are also present in dried lumber. Moisture content variations, drying defects, and color changes were evaluated in the present work for three drying methods (kiln, solar, and air drying) during three seasons (dry, rainy, and transition season) in Costa Rica. According to the results, kiln drying had the fastest drying times, regardless of the season. On the other hand, air drying had slower drying time and higher final moisture content. With regard to defects, kiln drying produced the highest number and magnitude of defects in both species, whereas air drying showed the lowest quantity and severity of defects. No variations due to the drying methods or the season were observed in check and split, though solar drying presented intermediate values in all drying defects. The seasons of the year did not present any effect on drying defects. Finally, T. grandis dried lumber is darker than green lumber, and dried G. arborea wood is clearer. In addition, there is an increase in red ( a * ) and yellow ( L * ) tonalities, and color changes (Δ E * ) are considered perceptible or very perceptible in both species. No differences were found among the three drying methods in Δ E * , although the season of the year affected dif L * and dif C * significantly. 相似文献
