Parameter Sensitivity and Predictive Uncertainty in a New Water Quality Model, Q2

A new dynamic model of water quality, Q2, has recently been developed, capable of simulating large branched river systems. This paper describes the application of a generalized sensitivity analysis (GSA) to Q2 for single reaches of the River Thames in southern England. Focusing on the simulation of dissolved oxygen (DO) (since this may be regarded as a proxy for the overall health of a river); the GSA is used to identify key parameters controlling model behavior and provide a probabilistic procedure for model calibration. It is shown that, in the River Thames at least, it is more important to obtain high quality forcing functions than to obtain improved parameter estimates once approximate values have been estimated. Furthermore, there is a need to ensure reasonable simulation of a range of water quality determinands, since a focus only on DO increases predictive uncertainty in the DO simulations. The Q2 model has been applied here to the River Thames, but it has a broad utility for evaluating other systems in Europe and around the world.

First principles total energy studies of the adsorption of germane on Ge(001)-c(2 × 4)

We perform first principles total energy calculations to study the energetics, and the atomic structure of the adsorption of germane (GeH₄) molecules on the Ge(001)-c(2 × 4) surface. The adsorption of a GeH₄ unit occurs after its dissociation into a germanium trihydride (GeH₃) and a hydrogen atom and a subsequent decomposition into a germanium dihydride (GeH₂) subunit and H atoms. Consequently, we first consider the adsorption of GeH₂ in two different configurations; the on-dimer and the intra-row geometries. Similar to the adsorption of SiH₂ and GeH₂ on Si(001), it is found that the on-dimer site is more stable than the intra-row geometry by 0.13 eV. However, in the adsorption of a GeH₂ fragment together with two H atoms we find that the intra-row geometry is energetically more favorable, again, similar to the adsorption of SiH₂ and GeH₂ (plus two H atoms) on the Si(001) surface.

Collinearity and Parallelism are Statistically Significant Second-Order Relations of Complex Cell Responses

By investigating the second-order statistics of Gabor wavelet responses derived from natural images, we show that collinearity and parallelism are conspicuous relations. We give a precise mathematical characterization of these Gestalt principles by the conditional probability of two responses. Essential for our investigations is a non-linear transformation, initially utilized within the object recognition system [5], which transforms continuous Gabor wavelet responses into a binary code indicating the presence or absence of local oriented line segments.
