This paper introduces an approach where the match of two different length scales, i.e., pattern from self‐assembly of block copolymer micelles (< 100 nm) and electron‐beam (e‐beam) writing (> 50 nm), allow the grouping of nanometer‐sized gold clusters in very small numbers in even aperiodic pattern and separation of these groups at length scales that are not accessible by pure self‐assembly. We have studied the adsorption and electronic properties of thin melanin films on Au(1 1 1) by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and density functional (DF) calculations. We have found that the minimum melanin unit detected under different adsorption conditions is consistent with the structural model for eumelanin protomolecules based on tetramer macrocycles formed by four monomer units (hydroquinone, indolequinone and its tautomers) with an inner porphyrin ring. DF calculations reveal that the entire π structure of the tetramers is implied in the chemisorption process through its frontier orbitals (HOMO and LUMO), a fact that is reflected in the change of intramolecular bonds. Also van der Waals interactions give an important contribution to the adsorption energy (≈0.02 eV/Å2). Dried thin melanin films (1 monolayer in thickness) exhibit good electronic conductance due to the presence of localized states near the Fermi level while dried thicker films exhibit a semiconductor-like behavior. Illumination of the thicker films with white light results in significant photo-induced tunneling currents when the melanin-covered Au is made negative with respect to the tip. 相似文献

The synthesis of three‐dimensionally ordered, transparent gold‐nanocrystal (NC)/silica superlattice thin films using the self‐assembly (by spin‐coating) of water‐soluble gold nanocrystal micelles and soluble silica is reported by Fan and co‐workers on p. 891. The robust, 3D NC/silica superlattice films are of interest for the development of collective optical and electronic phenomena, and, importantly, for the integration of NC arrays into device architectures. Nanocrystals and their ordered arrays hold many important applications in fields such as catalysis, surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy based sensors, memory storage, and electronic and optical nanodevices. Herein, a simple and general method to synthesize ordered, three‐dimensional, transparent gold nanocrystal/silica superlattice thin films by self‐assembly of gold nanocrystal micelles with silica or organosilsesquioxane by spin‐coating is reported. The self‐assembly process is conducted under acidic sol–gel conditions (ca. pH 2), ensuring spin‐solution homogeneity and stability and facilitating the formation of ordered and transparent gold nanocrystal/silica films. The monodisperse nanocrystals are organized within inorganic host matrices as a face‐centered cubic mesostructure, and characterized by transmission electron spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction. 相似文献

We report a unique approach for producing one‐dimensional gold‐nanoparticle patterns with single‐particle resolution in which the linewidth is only limited by the particle size. In this approach, a focused electron beam was first utilized to generate a positive charge layer on a SiO2 surface. Biotinated DNA molecules attracted by these positive charges were subsequently used to grasp Au‐nanoparticles revealing the e‐beam exposure patterns. Due to repulsive force between Au colloidal particles, the particles in the single‐line patterns were orderly separated. We further show that the single‐line patterns hold potential in nano‐photonics and nano‐electronics. For the latter, we demonstrate that the line patterns can serve as a template for conductive nanowires of high or low resistance. While low resistance wires showed linear current–voltage characteristics with an extremely high maximum allowed current density, the high resistance wires exhibited charging effect with clear Coulomb oscillation behavior at low temperatures. This demonstrates that the technique is capable of producing interconnects as well as single‐electron‐transistors, and opens up possibilities for fabrication of integrated circuits. 相似文献
