Engineering Issues for Early Lunar‐Based Telescopes

A telescope on the Moon is needed for astronomy and can be constructed in this decade or early in the next century. Design for this telescope will be fundamentally different from the design of free‐flying telescopes. Its design will be more like the new Keck telescope being completed on a mountaintop in Hawaii than the Hubble Space Telescope, in low Earth orbit. Success of the lunar‐based telescope will depend on an appropriately engineered structure, a suitable interface (foundation) in the lunar soil, and a carefully thought out construction process. Participation of engineers in identifying and resolving issues for this extraterrestrial engineering and construction project is a natural extension of the traditional engineering role, and will prepare the engineering and construction communities for the subsequent greater challenges associated with basing on the Moon. These communities need to document now the types of data and information that NASA should obtain in the next early lunar missions so that construction on the Moon will be facilitated.

An approach to integrating educational software into the curriculum

Abstract  A scheme for teacher involvement in exploring the use of mathematical software was designed to meet practical needs of effective implementation. The scheme consists of observation of students at work, followed by didactical and cognitive workshops, in which teachers reflect on the implications of their observations for further classroom activities. The details of the scheme are described via an actual algebra software implementation in Grade 8. Observation of students working on the software and an informal evaluation of their achievement as related to the learning goals, led to professional teacher development toward adaptive implementation of the software for individual students.     

Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions: Paul Satz.

Announces that Paul Satz has received the APA's 1996 Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Knowledge. Satz is considered one of the top world authorities in the area of developmental neuropsychology. He was one of the early founders of the International Neuropsychological Society, he helped establish the American Psychological Association's Division 40, and he participated in the development and certification of neuropsychology as a diplomate specialty of the American Board of Professional Psychology. Distinguished contributions to applied psychology as a professional practice: Rogers H. Wright.

Presents the citation, biography, and bibliography for Rogers H. Wright, the 1985 recipient of the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Contributions to Applied Psychology as a Professional Practice. Known by many as the 'Father of Professional Psychology,' Dr. Wright has been in the forefront of the struggle for recognition by Professional Psychology. Possibly the most important and powerful contribution that Dr. Wright has made was in co-founding and being the first President of the Committee for the Advancement of Psychological Professions and Sciences (CAPPS), the group that introduced Psychology into public policy advocacy. It was this group that brought the American Psychological Association into the public policy arena and led to the establishment of AAP and the various policy groups within APA that now play such a major part in APA's program. 文章对20世纪初的三本公共出版物《建筑新法》、《建筑图案》、《实用建筑学》进行观念史层面的讨论。在三本文献的对比阅读中,文章试图从文献分析的角度讨论20世纪20年代以前社会观念中一般建筑师"专业性"建立过程的几个侧面及其历史脉络,并在中国传统建筑行业现代化的背景下从社会观念史的角度讨论这一过程的历史价值。
