System Project Failure: The Heuristics of Risk

Abstract

System project failures are a well-known part of systems development; however, all the potential risks of planning and executing a project effort are not This article offers heuristic guidelines to help IS managers assess these inherent risk factors before initiating and while executing a project. Case examples illustrate how a particular risk factor can result in a failed systems development effort.     

Integrating IS Disciplines into End-User Training

Abstract

In addition to software training, users need to learn systems analysis concepts and development techniques that will enable them to develop better and more reliable end-user applications. IS managers should realize that this type of IS-sponsored training not only improves the users’ productivity but the IS staffs as well.     

A note about the complexity of minimizing Nesterov's smooth Chebyshev–Rosenbrock function

This short note considers and resolves the apparent contradiction between known worst-case complexity results for first- and second-order methods for solving unconstrained smooth nonconvex optimization problems and a recent note by Jarre [On Nesterov's smooth Chebyshev–Rosenbrock function, Optim. Methods Softw. (2011)] implying a very large lower bound on the number of iterations required to reach the solution's neighbourhood for a specific problem with variable dimension.     

An introduction to the Information Display Measurement Standard 1, the first display measurement standard from the International Committee for Display Metrology

On June 1, 2012, the Information Display Measurement Standard version 1 was released. This is the first standard from the worldwide standard group, the International Committee for Display Metrology, a standards committee within SID, and it culminates several years worth of development from many contributors at various levels. It has 26 top‐level chapters and a total over 450 sections of all parts, including over 200 measurement sections and 8 appendices that cover 133 topics of display metrology, tutorials, technical discussions, and references. Herein is an overview of the Information Display Measurement Standard version 1, including the structure of the document, tips, tricks, and hidden features, how it is maintained, support material, a breakdown of its contents, and finally, a sampling of four of the over 200 measurements. Using the World Wide Web for Art and Humanities Reference Services

Abstract

This paper describes what the World Wide Web is and what is needed in order to access its information. It discusses the future of art and humanities reference resources and presents criteria for evaluating Web sites. A review of the literature related to “Generation X” and their information expectations was done. There is an annotated list of specific World Wide Web resources related to African Diaspora, American Poetry, Comparative Literature, Gay and Lesbian Literature, and Outsider Art. This list provides examples for evaluation and is not meant to be exhaustive.     

Backscatter from the data plane – Threats to stability and security in information-centric network infrastructure

Information-centric networking (ICN) raises data objects to first class routable entities in the network and changes the Internet paradigm from host-centric connectivity to data-oriented delivery. However, current approaches to content routing heavily rely on data-driven protocol events and thereby introduce a strong coupling of the control to the data plane in the underlying routing infrastructure. In this paper, threats to the stability and security of the content distribution system are analyzed in theory, simulations, and practical experiments. We derive relations between state resources and the performance of routers, and demonstrate how this coupling can be misused in practice. We further show how state-based forwarding tends to degrade by decorrelating resources. We identify intrinsic attack vectors present in current content-centric routing, as well as possibilities and limitations to mitigate them. Our overall findings suggest that major architectural refinements are required prior to global ICN deployment in the real world.     

Cognitive evaluation for conceptual design: cognitive role of a 3D sculpture tool in the design thinking process

ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the decisive role played by the digital design environment in the cognitive design process and design thinking. To analyse the cognitive role of digital design tools, we carried out a protocol analysis of conventional design sketching and a 3D sculpture tool. Cognitive evaluation was a differentiating factor when considering the contextual role of the 3D sculpture tool in subsequent evaluations, non-sequential evaluations for conversion, and passive approaches within the design process. Cognitive evaluation played the following roles: validation, extension, navigation, exploration, and confirmation. The navigation, exploration, and extension roles played by non-sequential evaluation were mainly related to inductive design thinking. Finally, the types of cognitive evaluation and their roles when using the 3D sculpture tool were different, according to the design thinking type. This study explored the multidimensional roles of cognitive evaluation using a 3D sculpture tool and its relationship with design thinking types.

根据风力发电技术产业的特点,构建改进层次分析与模糊一致矩阵相结合的方案决策数学模型,该模型既可以减少确定判断矩阵的盲目性,又可以避开评价体系中各等级间的隶属度确定问题,使评价结果更加可靠,适合于信息尚不完整、受主观因素影响较强的评价。实例验证了这一模型的合理性、可行性和有效性,具有实用价值。
