Semi-solid squeeze casting of ignition-proof mg-ca-zr system alloys

The production method of the near-net shape molded Mg-Ca-Zr alloys by the devised semi-solid squeeze casting was established and the fabrication factors for sound products were also investigated. The Mg-Ca-Zr alloys having an ignition-proof property and very fine spherical structure provide high production safety and good fluidity for quality near-net shape products in semi-solid state processing. The orifice with a diameter of 30 mm and a plunger speed of 80 mm/s contribute successfully to infiltrate the semi-solid state prema-terial into the designed mold perfectly within the limited infiltration time. The tensile strengths and elongations of the ignition-proof Mg-Ca-Zr and Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloys are improved by applying the high pressure of 100 MPa, indicating that pressure more than 100 MPa is also an important fabrication factor.     

Limiting Phenomena in the Reaction of Fluorine with Hydrogen

Reactions involving energy branching and deceleration by the end product were studied using as an example the reaction of fluorine with hydrogen. It has been shown that for such reactions, entrance into the autoignition region determined by static conditions (reagent concentration, pressure, and temperature) due to variation in the pressure of the mixture may be or may not be accompanied by mixture autoignition. The parameter determining the behavior of a particular mixture is the rate of variation in the mixture pressure. A process of fast (in the range of seconds) preparation of fluorocarbon mixtures with minimal yield of hydrogen fluoride is substantiated.

Calculations of Solution Energies of Fission Products in Uranium Dioxide

Both lattice simulation and quantum-mechanical techniques are applied to the study of the sites and solution energies of fission products in UO₂. We consider noble gas atoms, alkali metal, alkaline-earth, and halide species. It is shown that the charge state of the dissolved fission product may depend on the fuel stoichiometry. In particular, iodine may be stable as either I⁺ at U sites or I^– at O sites in UO_2+x, but should be present only as I^– at O sites in UO_2–x.

Process design data for prok chilling

In 1993 legislation is being enacted throughout the European Community (EC) that will require the maximum temperature of pork carcasses to be below 7°C before cutting or transportation. Results from a survey of UK abattoirs are summarized to highlight the problems and inadequacies of current commercial chilling systems. Design data are presented for conventional pork-chilling systems, which detail the effects of air temperature, air velocity and carcass weight on chilling times. Four novel or modified chilling systems are discussed: ultra-rapid chilling with air at −30°C; immersion chilling in brine at 0°C; ice-bank chilling in humid air at 2°C; and spray chilling in two stages, at 10°C for 2 h followed by 4°C for 21 h. The potential of such systems for the acceleration of chilling rates and for substantial weight savings is identified.
