Developing Sustainable Research Networks in Graduate Education

The traditional modes of knowledge production and circulation in academia are (slowly but surely) shifting from the hierarchical, top-down systems of print to the distributed, bottom-up systems of the Web. It is in the context of these shifts and the rapid development of Web 2.0 tools and methods that we argue for a concomitant shift in the predominant practices of graduate education in rhetoric—particularly for students of digital rhetoric. In this article, we describe the development of a research network that combines the power of digital networking with the collaborative facilitation offered by communities of practice and consider how research networks can be grown and sustained as part of the graduate education of technorhetoricians.     

A change management framework for macroergonomic field research

With the proliferation of macroergonomic field research, it is time to carefully examine how such research should be managed and implemented. We argue that the importance of attending to high-quality implementation of field research is equal to that of methodological rigor. One way to systematically manage the implementation process is to adopt a change management framework, wherein the research project is conceptualized as an instance of organization-level change. Consequently, principles for successful organization-level change from the literature on change management can be used to guide successful field research implementation. This paper briefly reviews that literature, deriving 30 principles of successful change management, covering topics such as political awareness, assembling the change team, generating buy-in, and management support. For each principle, corresponding suggestions for macroergonomic field research practice are presented. We urge other researchers to further develop and adopt frameworks that guide the implementation of field research.

跨国公司研发项目风险评估方法研究

日益众多的跨国企业越来越重视研发项目的风险评估。在分析跨国公司研发项目风险特点的基础上,提出了一套切实可行的跨国公司研发项目的风险评估指标体系。基于TOPSIS（Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution）的定量评估方法,提出了一种跨国公司研发项目风险评估方法。数据实例表明,方法是可行的、正确的和有效的。在跨国公司研发项目风险管理过程中,可以运用该方法对其进行评估,根据评估结果对研发项目进行优选排序,为管理决策提供有效的科学依据。

本文从介绍办公自动化的概念入手,通过对OA应用现实困境的分析,就协同办公自动化系统的需求分析、设计思想和总体设计(包括信息集成平台和OA应用平台)、技术平台进行阐述、分析和比较,并对未来OA的发展趋势作以预测。     

Ruminations of an Editor-in-Chief

The Journal of Strategic Information Systems (JSIS) was first published December 1991 by Robert (Bob) D. Galliers, its Founding Editor-in-Chief (EiC). Early on Bob invited me to join the JSIS International Editorial Board¹ (the Board then being more operational, with members serving as quasi-AEs, an arrangement we’ve reinstituted more recently). I became Pacific Asia Region Editor in 2003, with JSIS shifting from region editors to Senior Editors in 2007, in which role I served the journal through the end of 2018. Mid-2018 Bob and Sirkka (Sirkka Jarvenpaa joined as co-EiC in 2000) jointly decided it was time; and announced they would both step down from their co-EiC roles at the end of that year. In September 2018, I was endorsed by Bob and Sirkka, the Senior Editors and Elsevier, to succeed Bob and Sirkka and assume the role of Editor-in-Chief of JSIS commencing 1 January 2019. I served as Editor-in-Chief through 1 July 2021 after which Yolande Chan and I served as co-Editors-in-Chief. Now the end of 2022, I am stepping down from operational involvement with the journal. In this my final editorial I focus on my time as EiC, also reflecting on my almost 3 decades with the journal. I much appreciate being invited to write these brief ruminations and am honoured to be included amongst the journal’s Emeritus, along with the esteemed Robert Galliers and Sirkka Jarvenpaa.     

Impact of Intellectual Property Rights on the Governance Mode Decisions of Engineering Managers During the Establishment of Research Alliances With Publicly Funded Entities

Strengthening intellectual property rights for publicly financed research and development (R&D) ensures that research organizations maximize the full national value of the intellectual property that they generate, but potential negative spillover effects on the perceived value of a research alliance might deter an existing alliance partner from continued collaboration or a potential alliance partner from future collaboration. This study, performed in 2010 within the context of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa, aimed to develop a structural equation modeling-based value-mediation governance decision-making model that will enable engineering managers at publicly financed R&D organizations to select optimal governance modes for the research alliances they are establishing to grow their organizations’ R&D capabilities.     

Research Progress in the Application of Chinese Herbal Medicines in Aquaculture: A Review

Due to increasing safety concerns regarding human consumption of fish products, an increasing number of medicinal chemicals are prohibited from use in aquaculture. As a result, Chinese herbal medicines are being increasingly used, coining the use of the term “green medicine.” Research shows that Chinese herbal medicines have many beneficial effects on fish, including growth promotion, enhancement of disease resistance, and improvement in meat quality. Many effective ingredients have been discovered in Chinese herbal medicines, which function to promote feed intake, improve meat flavor, and increase digestive enzyme activity. They also regulate and participate in processes that improve the specific and non-specific immunity of fish; however, the composition of Chinese herbal medicines is very complex and it is often difficult to identify the effective ingredients. This article reviews the latest research and application progress in Chinese herbal medicines regarding growth and feed utilization, immunity and disease resistance, and the meat quality of cultured fish. It also discusses research on the chemical constituents of classical Chinese medicinal herbs and problems with the application of Chinese herbal medicines in fish culture. This article concludes by proposing that future studies on Chinese herbal medicines should focus on how to cheaply refine and extract the effective ingredients in classical Chinese medicinal herbs, as well as how to use them efficiently in aquaculture.
