Acrylonitrile/acrylic acid copolymers were synthesized with different mole fractions (1, 2, 5 and 10 mol%) of acrylic acid (AA) in the feed by aqueous suspension polymerization, and bead‐free fibres (295–375 nm in diameter) were made from the copolymers in dimethylformamide solutions by electrospinning. In a heterogeneous system containing electrospun fibre mats, dendritic molecules were grown by reaction between carboxylic acid of AA and –OH groups of citric acid activated by dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. The products were analysed using 1H NMR, 13C NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies, density determination, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and pH response properties. With decreasing AA content, the isotacticity of the copolymers decreases with a more random distribution of the co‐monomers which leads to higher percentage conversions of dendrigraft due to reduced steric hindrance. On the formation of dendrigraft, the percentage conversion of the reactions decreases with an increase of generation number and AA content. A reduction of density for the first generation and then an increase with increasing generation are observed. During oxidation stabilization of fibres with a decrease of AA content and an increase in generation number, the amount of liberated heat increases. Fibres containing more carboxylic groups show significantly greater amounts of swelling/de‐swelling in basic and acidic media, respectively. To be used as nanocarbon fibre precursors, or as active particles for loading with guest molecules, or as pH actuators, the first generation of dendrigrafted fibres are expected to have the greatest potential among the various samples examined. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

Jute fabrics/gelatin biocomposites were fabricated using compression molding. The fiber content in the composite varied from 20–60 wt%. Composites were subjected to mechanical, thermal, water uptake and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis. Composite contained 50 wt% jute showed the best mechanical properties. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, bending strength, bending modulus and impact strength of the 50% jute content composites were found to be 85 MPa, 1.25 GPa, 140 MPa and 9 GPa and 9.5 kJ/m2, respectively. Water uptake properties at room temperature were evaluated and found that the composites had lower water uptake compared to virgin matrix. 相似文献

Lycopene is a phytochemical that belongs to a group of pigments known as carotenoids. It is red, lipophilic and naturally occurring in many fruits and vegetables, with tomatoes and tomato-based products containing the highest concentrations of bioavailable lycopene. Several epidemiological studies have linked increased lycopene consumption with decreased prostate cancer risk. These findings are supported by in vitro and in vivo experiments showing that lycopene not only enhances the antioxidant response of prostate cells, but that it is even able to inhibit proliferation, induce apoptosis and decrease the metastatic capacity of prostate cancer cells. However, there is still no clearly proven clinical evidence supporting the use of lycopene in the prevention or treatment of prostate cancer, due to the only limited number of published randomized clinical trials and the varying quality of existing studies. The scope of this article is to discuss the potential impact of lycopene on prostate cancer by giving an overview about its molecular mechanisms and clinical effects. 相似文献

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease characterised by degradation of articular cartilage and bone remodelling. For almost a decade chondrocyte apoptosis has been investigated as a possible mechanism of cartilage damage in OA, but its precise role in initiation and/or progression of OA remains to the determined. The aim of this study is to determine the role of chondrocyte apoptosis in spontaneous animal models of OA. Right tibias from six male Dunkin Hartley (DH) and Bristol Strain 2 (BS2) guinea pigs were collected at 10, 16, 24 and 30 weeks of age. Fresh-frozen sections of tibial epiphysis were microscopically scored for OA, and immunostained with caspase-3 and TUNEL for apoptotic chondrocytes. The DH strain had more pronounced cartilage damage than BS2, especially at 30 weeks. At this time point, the apoptotic chondrocytes were largely confined to the deep zone of articular cartilage (AC) with a greater percentage in the medial side of DH than BS2 (DH: 5.7%, 95% CI: 4.2–7.2), BS2: 4.8%, 95% CI: 3.8–5.8), p > 0.05). DH had a significant progression of chondrocyte death between 24 to 30 weeks during which time significant changes were observed in AC fibrillation, proteoglycan depletion and overall microscopic OA score. A strong correlation (p ≤ 0.01) was found between chondrocyte apoptosis and AC fibrillation (r = 0.3), cellularity (r = 0.4) and overall microscopic OA scores (r = 0.4). Overall, the rate of progression in OA and apoptosis over the study period was greater in the DH (versus BS2) and the medial AC (versus lateral). Chondrocyte apoptosis was higher at the later stage of OA development when the cartilage matrix was hypocellular and highly fibrillated, suggesting that chondrocyte apoptosis is a late event in OA. 相似文献

Bacteria, although considered for decades to be antisocial organisms whose sole purpose is to find nutrients and multiply are, in fact, highly communicative organisms. Referred to as quorum sensing, cell-to-cell communication mechanisms have been adopted by bacteria in order to co-ordinate their gene expression. By behaving as a community rather than as individuals, bacteria can simultaneously switch on their virulence factor production and establish successful infections in eukaryotes. Understanding pathogen-host interactions requires the use of infection models. As the use of rodents is limited, for ethical considerations and the high costs associated with their use, alternative models based on invertebrates have been developed. Invertebrate models have the benefits of low handling costs, limited space requirements and rapid generation of results. This review presents examples of such models available for studying the pathogenicity of the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Quorum sensing interference, known as quorum quenching, suggests a promising disease-control strategy since quorum-quenching mechanisms appear to play important roles in microbe-microbe and host-pathogen interactions. Examples of natural and synthetic quorum sensing inhibitors and their potential as antimicrobials in Pseudomonas-related infections are discussed in the second part of this review. 相似文献

In order to improve the interaction between the reinforcement and the matrix binder, fibre surface modification with micro-organisms is proposed. Enzymatic hydrolysis of surface macromolecules in aramid fibres leads to the formation of carboxyl groups. If an aqueous solution containing polyvinyl alcohol is the nutrient for the micro-organisms, hydrolysis is followed by the grafting of alcohol molecules onto the fibre surface through etherification. The fibre strength does not deteriorate, but the morphology and the chemical nature of the surface undergo alterations. As a result, wetting by molten thermoplastics is improved. The three-fibre method was used to investigate the adhesion between poly-p-amidobenzimidazole fibres (unmodified and modified) and thermoplastic matrices (polysulphone and polycarbonate). The biochemical treatment almost doubled the bond strength. Examination of the modified fibres, separated from the matrices, by scanning electron microscopy indicated the presence of a diffuse interphase between the fibre and the matrix. In the case of untreated fibres, the adhesional contact failed through interfacial shear; however, with modified fibres both were observed: interfacial shear and cohesive failure in the fibre. Thus, biochemical modification seems to be a simple method for fibre treatment to promote the compatibility of fibres and matrices, and to increase the composite strength. 相似文献

The surface characteristics of variously treated carbon and glass fibres have been determined by contact angle measurements (using a capillary rise technique), inverse gas chromatography, and zeta potential measurements. The contact angles of water and methylene iodide were used to calculate the dispersive and non-dispersive components of the fibre surface free energy by applying the geometric mean approach, and the approach by Fowkes to estimate the acid-base term of the thermodynamic work of adhesion. The results obtained correlate with those of inverse gas chromatographic and zeta potential measurements. The non-polar surface character of the carbon fibre can be altered by oxidizing, or finishing the fibres with an epoxy resin. The acid-base term of the thermodynamic work of adhesion, Wab a, and the non-dispersive component of the surface free energy, γp s, are increased drastically by these treatments. Treatment of the 'high-energy' glass fibre surface with an aminosilane results in a relatively low surface free energy with basic surface groups. When epoxy dispersions were used for sizing the glass fibres, the surface free energy increased without changing the basic surface character. A direct correlation between the surface-energetic properties of the fibres and the mechanical behaviour of the fibre-reinforced polyamide composites was not generally found. 相似文献

A novel method is proposed for determining the diffusion coefficient (D) of disperse dyes in PET fibres. Concentration-distance profiles are recorded on optical sections of single fibres by confocal laser scanning microscopy. This allows for an accurate value of the true diffusion coefficient in the fibres as well as for a founded insight in the dye diffusion process and its interrelation with the glass transition, which is not possible by the commonly used methods. At 130 °C, the common industrial dyeing temperature, the diffusion coefficient showed to be constant for the dyes tested, with D being about five times larger for the anthraquinone dye than for the benzodifuranone dye. At 100-110 °C, near to the start of the glass transition region of the fibres, D could no longer be regarded as a constant for the anthraquinone dye but was concentration dependent. This was explained by the plasticising effect of the anthraquinone dye. 相似文献

An in situ BN coating was prepared on the surface of a nearly stoichiometric continuous SiC fibre with trademark Cansas-3301 (C3). The coated fibre was then subjected to continuous pyrolysis at 1800 °C, obtaining a fibre named Cansas-BN-1800 (C18). After annealing in Ar at 1500 °C for 1 h, the strength retention ratio of C3 was 49%, and that of C18 was almost unchanged. The strength decrease of the C3 fibre was mainly caused by the formation of surface defects resulting from fibre decomposition and active oxidation. However, the in situ BN coating on C18 protected the fibre from forming surface defects, resulting in high strength. Due to slight growth of the grain and purification of the grain boundary during fast heating at 1800 °C, C18 showed excellent creep resistance in the range of 1200–1500 °C. 相似文献
