Heat stress has the potential to adversely affect the physiology, passive immunity, and growth of preweaning dairy calves, increasing their risk of respiratory disease. The effect of heat stress on the risk for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) may be mediated in part through housing, ventilation, and management factors. As a result, differences may exist in meteorological measures recorded in the calf-rearing area (macroenvironment) and within a calf's enclosure (microenvironment). The objective of this prospective cohort study was to evaluate and compare the association between exposure to temperature and humidity measured at the macro- and microenvironment, and BRD in preweaning dairy calves; a secondary objective was to evaluate the correlation between the macro- and microenvironment. A cohort of 252 calves from 4 premises in central San Joaquin Valley, California (CA), was followed and evaluated for development of respiratory disease using the CA BRD scoring system for preweaning dairy calves, a standardized and validated scoring system. During this time, the meteorological conditions of the calf-rearing area and the within-hutch environment were measured and showed a significant correlation with regard to temperature and humidity. Mixed effects logistic regression and survival analysis were used to analyze the association between the exposures daily environmental measures of temperature, humidity, and temperature-humidity index (THI) and the outcome BRD, adjusted for dairy premises, calf age, sex, and breed. Results showed a significant positive association between daily maximum temperature and BRD in both the calf's macroenvironment [odds ratio = 1.121 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.029–1.222)] and microenvironment [odds ratio = 1.203 (95% CI = 1.020–1.418)]. Estimated hazard rates also showed a significant positive association between BRD and daily maximum temperature in both the macroenvironment [hazard ratio = 1.127 (95% CI = 1.053–1.206)] and microenvironment [hazard ratio = 1.119 (95% CI = 1.047–1.197)]. In contrast, we found no association between daily maximum humidity in a calf's microenvironment and BRD. Daily maximum THI within the hutch was significantly associated with only the rate of BRD cases [hazard ratio = 1.070 (95% CI = 1.003–1,141)] but not the odds of occurrence of BRD. Maximum THI is estimated using temperature and humidity, which in California's hot and dry summers may limit variability in THI, explaining its weaker significant association with risk of BRD (or lack of association with odds of BRD) compared with models for maximum temperature in this study. Calves exposed to high day temperatures and relatively low humidity may be experiencing heat stress that predisposes to BRD. Results of the current study suggest that heat abatement efforts should address heat stress at the microenvironment level to mitigate BRD in calves. Further research should investigate strategies to improve calf hutch systems, including hutch materials and design that may optimize ventilation, provide ample shade, spacing, cleanliness, and protection from heat.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of Cr supplementation on growth performance, feeding behavior, health status, and blood metabolites of summer-exposed dairy calves during the pre- and postweaning periods. A total of 24 newborn Holstein female calves (1 d of age; 42.1 ± 0.89 kg of body weight) were assigned randomly to a control group (no Cr supplement; Cr?) or a Cr group (Cr+) receiving 0.05 mg of Cr/kg of body weight0.75. During the study period, the average maximum temperature-humidity index was 81.3 units, indicating a high environmental heat load. Chromium was provided in colostrum and milk during the preweaning period, and in the starter feed during the postweaning period. Calves had free access to fresh water and starter feed throughout the experiment and were weaned on d 63. Starter feed intake and total dry matter intake were greater in Cr+ calves. Despite decreased meal frequency in Cr+ calves, during the preweaning period the starter feed intake increased due to increases in meal duration and meal size and a tendency for greater meal interval. Increased postweaning starter intake in Cr+ calves was attributed to a tendency for an increase in meal duration. Chromium-supplemented calves had greater overall weight gain, but their feed efficiency and rectal temperature were not affected by Cr treatment. Chromium supplementation tended to increase the heart girth during the preweaning and overall periods and increased the hip width during the postweaning and overall periods. Respiration rates were lower in Cr+ calves than Cr? calves during the preweaning and overall periods. During the preweaning period, the time spent in eating and ruminating per 12-h period was not affected by Cr treatment. During the postweaning period, the rumination time (min per 12-h period) was unaffected but total eating time (min per 12-h period) increased in Cr+ calves. Times spent resting, drinking, standing, lying, and in nonnutritive oral behaviors were not affected by treatments during the pre- and postweaning periods. Chromium supplementation had no effects on serum concentrations of cortisol, triiodothyronine, and thyroxine measured at weaning or the end of the trial. The Cr+ calves tended to have higher serum concentrations of glucose and a higher ratio of insulin to glucose measured at the end of the trial. In conclusion, Cr supplementation of both liquid and solid feeds improved growth performance in summer-exposed calves as a result of reduced respiration rate and increased feed intake; however, no beneficial effects were found on feed efficiency and insulin metabolism.  相似文献

The objective of this prospective cohort study was to describe the relationship between exposure to antimicrobials, through both the milk diet and systemic therapy, and to describe antimicrobial resistance of fecal Escherichia coli in dairy calves pre- and postweaning. A convenience sample of 15 Minnesota dairy farms was chosen, representing 3 equal cohorts of milk diet fed to preweaned calves: medicated milk replacer (MMR), nonmedicated milk replacer (NMR), or pasteurized nonsaleable milk (PNM). Five newborn calves were enrolled on each farm, with fecal samples collected from each calf at 1, 3, 5, and 16 wk of age. After isolation, 3 colonies of E. coli were randomly selected from each sample to determine antimicrobial susceptibility by minimum inhibitory concentration (Sensititer, Thermo Scientific, Waltham, MA) to 8 antimicrobials in 8 classes. The isolate was given an antimicrobial resistance score (ARS) according to the number of antimicrobial classes to which it was resistant. Any isolate resistant to 3 or more antimicrobials was defined as being multidrug resistant (MDR). Relationships between ARS and MDR (dependent variables) and possible explanatory variables were analyzed using mixed multivariable linear and logistic regression models, respectively, with critical P-values adjusted for multiple contrasts. Seventy percent of isolates were resistant to sulfadimethoxine. For wk 1 and 3, the mean ARS values were greatest for fecal E. coli from calves fed MMR or PNM compared with NMR, with no difference in ARS values between the MMR and PNM groups at either time point. At wk 5, the mean ARS value was greatest for fecal E. coli from calves fed MMR (3.56 ± 0.45; mean ± SE), intermediate for calves fed PNM (2.64 ± 0.45), and lowest for calves fed NMR (1.54 ± 0.45). However, by wk 16, the mean ARS values were ≤1.0 and did not differ among milk diets. Evaluation of the proportion of isolates with MDR mirrored the results of the ARS analysis (MDR more prevalent in MMR and PNM groups preweaning; no difference among milk diets at 16 wk). There was a tendency for an increase in ARS at wk 5 (1.28 ± 0.70), and the odds for MDR in fecal E. coli were estimated to be 5.2 (95% confidence interval = 0.67, 35.7) and 101.1 (95% confidence interval = 1.15, >999.9) higher at wk 3 and 5 if the calf was treated with a systemic antimicrobial within the 14-d period before sampling. These findings suggest that exposure to antimicrobials through the milk diet or systemic therapy may result in a transient increase in resistance in fecal E. coli, but once the antimicrobial pressure is removed, susceptible E. coli are able to flourish again, resulting in an overall decrease in resistance.  相似文献

Studies have shown that calves fed milk replacers (MR) with crude protein (CP) concentrations greater than 20%, as typically found in conventional MR, have higher dry matter intakes (DMI) and greater average daily gains (ADG) but consume less starter, which can lead to stress during weaning and reduced rumen development. The greater amount of CP being fed to preweaned calves may alter their nitrogen (N) balance, and excess N may be excreted in the urine. The objective of this study was to determine N utilization in preweaned calves fed diets varying in the amount of CP and MR fed. This study used 24 newborn dairy heifer calves blocked by birth and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: (1) 446 g dry matter (DM) of a conventional MR (CON; 20% CP, 20% fat), (2) 669 g DM of a moderately high protein MR (moderate; MOD; 26% CP, 18% fat), or (3) 892 g DM of a moderately high protein MR (aggressive; AGG; 26% CP, 18% fat). All calves had ad libitum access to starter and water. Both MR and starter were medicated with decoquinate. During weaning (d 43–49), the morning MR feeding ceased. On d 50, all MR feedings ended; however, starter and water intakes were continuously recorded until d 56. At 5 wk of age, urine was collected using urinary catheters for 3 d and chromium oxide was administered by bolus at 2 g/d for 7 d to estimate N efficiency. Calves fed MOD and AGG had similar starter intakes, feed efficiencies, and ADG, with the combined treatments having reduced starter intakes (258 vs. 537 g/d), greater ADG (674 vs. 422 g/d), and improved feed efficiency (0.57 vs. 0.45 gain:feed) compared with CON calves preweaning. However, DMI and water intake were similar across all treatments. Results from the N utilization phase showed that MOD and AGG treatments had similar but lower N efficiency compared with CON calves (45.5 vs. 52.7%). This could be due to MOD- and AGG-fed calves having greater urine volume and thereby, greater combined urine N output compared with CON calves (17.6 vs. 12.1 g/d). In summary, feeding >0.66 kg (DM) from a 26% CP MR increased ADG and improved feed efficiency during the preweaning period but reduced starter intake and lowered N efficiency.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to compare serum IgG concentration, weight gain, and health characteristics in Irish spring-born dairy calves fed colostrum stored using a range of conditions. Immediately after birth, 75 dairy heifer calves were assigned to 1 of 5 experimental colostrum treatments: (1) fresh pasteurized colostrum, fed immediately after pasteurization; (2) fresh colostrum, fed immediately after collection but not pasteurized; (3) colostrum stored unpasteurized at 4°C in a temperature-controlled unit for 2 d before being fed to calves; (4) colostrum stored unpasteurized at 13°C in a temperature-controlled unit for 2 d before being fed to calves; and (5) colostrum stored unpasteurized at 22°C in a temperature-controlled unit for 2 d before being fed to calves. All colostrum had IgG concentrations >50 g/L and was fed to calves promptly after birth. Blood samples were obtained from calves via the jugular vein at 0 h (before colostrum feeding) and at 24 h of age to determine the rate of passive transfer of IgG; individual calf live-weights were recorded to monitor weight gain (kg/d) from birth to weaning. Colostrum stored in warmer conditions (i.e., 22°C) had >42 times more bacteria present and a pH that was 0.85 units lower and resulted in a serum IgG concentration that was almost 2 times lower compared with colostrum that was pasteurized, untreated, or stored at 4°C for 2 d. Colostrum stored at 4°C for 2 d had more bacteria present than pasteurized and fresh colostrum but did not result in reduced calf serum IgG concentrations. Average daily weight gain from birth to weaning did not differ among treatments. Even if colostrum has sufficient IgG (>50 g/L) but cannot be fed to calves when freshly collected, storage at ≤4°C for 2 d is advisable to ensure adequate passive transfer when it is consumed by the calf.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate how milk allowance affects body weight gains and behavior before, during, and after weaning in dairy calves. Fifty-six Holstein calves were randomly assigned at 1 wk of age to 1 of 4 feeding treatments of whole pasteurized milk: 6, 8, 10, or 12 L/d. Milk allowance was reduced by 50% at d 42, and then reduced by 20% per day starting at d 50, so that calves were completely weaned at d 55. Calves were provided ad libitum access to calf starter and hay. Body weight was measured weekly from 2 to 10 wk of age. Milk intake increased with milk allowance as intended, although actual intakes were lower than the treatment allowance (e.g., averaging 5.66 ± 0.19 L on the 6-L treatment and 9.41 ± 0.21 L on the 12-L treatment before weaning). Intake of calf starter was higher for calves that were fed less milk before weaning (averaging 0.25 ± 0.03 kg/d and 0.05 ± 0.03 kg/d on the 6-L and 12-L treatments, respectively) and also during the weaning period (averaging 1.15 ± 0.13 kg/d and 0.54 ± 0.14 kg/d on these same treatments), but we observed no effect after weaning. Time spent at the hay feeder did not differ with treatment. Average daily gain was higher for calves that were fed more milk, increasing from 0.77 ± 0.04 kg/d with the 6-L treatment to 0.90 ± 0.03 kg/d with the 12-L treatment. Before weaning, calves fed less milk engaged in more unrewarded visits to the milk feeder, averaging 11.1 ± 0.73 visits/d with the 6-L treatment and 0.4 ± 0.78 visits/d with the 12-L treatment. During weaning, calves fed less milk still had more unrewarded visits to the milk feeder than calves fed more milk (19.7 ± 1.64 visits/d with the 6-L treatment versus 10.1 ± 1.74 visits/d with the 12-L treatment), but treatments did not differ after weaning. We conclude that higher milk allowances result in weight gain advantages before weaning that can persist beyond weaning, and that the high number of unrewarded visits to the milk feeder by calves that were fed less milk are indicative of persistent hunger.  相似文献

We determined the effects of calf milk replacers containing 0, 5, or 10% bovine plasma protein (PP), either without or with the supplemental amino acids (AA) Ile and Thr, on growth and health of male Holstein calves (n = 104) for 56 d. Milk replacers were formulated to contain 22% crude protein (CP), 20% fat, and 2.0% Lys. Milk replacers (12.5% solids) were fed at a rate of 1.5% of body weight (BW) on a dry matter basis during wk 1 and 1.75% of BW beginning on d 8. Starter was introduced on d 36 so that effects of PP and AA balance in milk replacers could be isolated. Intake, respiratory scores, and fecal scores were measured daily. Body weight and stature were measured weekly and blood serum samples were obtained during wk 4. Treatments had no effects on intakes of dry matter, CP, or metabolizable energy. During wk 6 and 8, BW was less as PP inclusion increased without AA supplementation compared with the other treatments. In wk 7, calves fed the higher level of PP without AA had lower BW than calves fed either the lower level of PP without supplemented AA or the higher inclusion of PP with supplemented AA. Average daily gain and gain:feed were lowest for calves fed the higher inclusion of PP without supplemented AA; heart girth in wk 7 was smallest for those calves. During the first 21 d, occurrence of scours was greater in calves fed the control milk replacer than in calves fed milk replacers containing the higher inclusion of PP either without or with supplemental AA. Occurrence of scours was also greater for the lower inclusion of PP compared with the higher inclusion of PP when AA were supplemented. Throughout the 56-d experiment, the chance of antibiotic treatment was greater for calves fed the control milk replacer than for all other treatments except the higher inclusion of PP without supplemental AA. Additionally, chance of antibiotic treatment was greater for the higher inclusion of PP without supplemental AA than for other milk replacers with PP. Calves fed treatments with the higher inclusion of PP had fewer days of scours than the controls. All milk replacers with PP, except the milk replacer containing higher PP without supplemental AA, had fewer days of treatment with antibiotics compared to the all-milk control. Inclusion of PP provided similar performance and improved health as long as milk replacers were balanced for Ile and Thr.  相似文献

The first calf paper, published in the May 1919 issue of the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS), described factors affecting birth body weight of different breeds of calves. Other studies were done on nonmilk ingredients, growth charts were developed, and early weaning was followed to conserve milk fed to calves. Calf papers did not report use of statistics to control or record variation or to determine whether treatment means were different. Many experiments were more observational than comparative. Typically fewer than 5 calves, and sometimes 1 or 2 calves, were used per treatment. During the next 20 yr, calf studies increased and included colostrum feeding, milk and milk replacer feeding, minerals and vitamins, and fats and oils. Many concepts fundamental to current knowledge and understanding of digestion, rumen development, and milk replacer formulation were developed during this period. In addition, the concept of using antibiotic growth promoters in dairy calf diets was first evaluated and developed during the 1950s. During the 20-yr period of January 1957 through December 1976, a large number of universities in the United States and 1 in Canada contributed almost 150 papers on a variety of calf-related topics. These topics included genetics, physiology of the calf, review of calf immunity, antibiotic feeding, and milk replacer ingredients. This became the golden era of calf rumen development studies, which also engendered studies of calf starter rations and ingredients. A classic review of management, feeding, and housing studies summarized research related to calf feeding and management systems up to that point with an emphasis on maintaining calf growth and health while reducing labor and feed costs. It was also during this period that metric measurements replaced English units. In the 20-yr period from 1977 to 1996, more than 400 articles on calf nutrition and management were published in JDS. With the growing research interest in calves, a paper outlining standardized procedures for conducting and reporting data from calf experiments was first published. A very active area of calf nutrition research from the late 1970s to the mid 1980s was colostrum quality, feeding, and preservation; more than 60 such research articles were published in the journal during this time. Various nonmilk protein sources were evaluated. Extensive studies were done evaluating trace and major mineral requirements in calves along with some vitamin studies. Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, the primary objective of most calf research was how to wean healthy, adequately grown calves at an early age—generally less than 30 d of age. This program was reviewed in a 1979 publication. Research on calf starter ingredients, nutrient composition, and additives was minimal in the 1980s and 1990s given the importance of starter intake to the success of early weaning, but the role of water intake in starter intake and growth was established. Research on issues with calves continued to increase during the last 20-yr period as evidenced by publication of more than 580 articles in JDS as well as many more in other refereed journals. In addition to papers contributed by several universities in the United States and Canada, the number of papers authored by scientists at universities and institutes in other countries increased dramatically during this period. Factors influencing colostral antibody absorption, heat treatment of colostrum, and efficacy of colostrum supplements and replacers were reported. Most studies in this period related to nutrition. Studies were published supporting greater neonatal growth rates from feeding more milk replacer but with a higher crude protein content than traditional. Protein energy effects on growth and body composition were evaluated in concert with greater growth rates. Milk and nonmilk protein sources in milk replacers along with AA supplementation were evaluated. Limited studies were done with fat sources and fatty acid supplementation along with trace minerals and fat-soluble vitamins. Waste milk feeding and heat treatment became more prevalent. Studies established starter ingredient palatability and use of forage when fed with pelleted starters. With the advent of automatic milk and milk replacer feeders, factors influencing how and when to wean were established. Research programs established factors affecting calf behavior and welfare. Several databases were evaluated along with various published studies, and established calf growth during the first 2 mo was subsequently reflected in first- and later-lactation milk production of those calves. A new area of calf research that emerged from 1997 on was the effects of maternal environment and nutrition on calf health, growth, and future productivity. From a mechanistic standpoint, the field of epigenetics seems likely to explain many of these phenomena. Some possibilities for future calf nutrition and management were elaborated.  相似文献

The objectives of this research were to evaluate milk replacer (MR) feeding rates, alternative protein and fat sources in MR, and calf starter starch concentration and their effects on calf performance to 4 mo of age. Male Holstein calves (42.6 ± 1.2 kg of body weight; n = 192) were assigned at 3 d of age to 1 of 8 treatments in a randomized complete block design with a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Factors tested from d 0 to 56 (nursery) were low or high MR feeding rates, 0 or 10% inclusion of spray-dried egg yolks in MR, and low- or high-starch calf starter. The low MR rate was 0.66 kg of dry matter (DM) fed for 39 d followed by 0.33 kg of DM for 3 d. The high MR rate was 0.87 kg of DM fed for 5 d, 1.08 kg of DM for 37 d, and 0.43 kg of DM for 7 d. The MR contained 27.5% crude protein and 19.6% fat (DM basis) and starters were 21.2% crude protein; low starch was a complete pellet with 10.2% starch, and high starch was textured using whole corn and oats with 43.3% starch. From d 56 to 112 (grower), calves were randomly assigned to pens (4 calves/pen) maintaining MR rate and starch content while stratifying yolk treatments within pen, resulting in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Starter was blended with 5% chopped hay during the grower trial. Fecal scores and medical treatments were recorded daily. In the nursery trial, calves were weighed initially and weekly thereafter. Hip width and body condition score (BCS) were measured initially and every 2 wk thereafter. In the grower trial, body weight, hip width, and BCS were measured on d 56, 84, and 112. Data were analyzed as repeated measures with calf (nursery) or pen (grower) as the experimental unit. Calf average daily gain, hip width, and BCS change were greater for calves fed high versus low MR, 0 versus 10% yolk, and high versus low starch in the nursery. In the grower trial, calves fed low MR and high starch had the greatest average daily gain (1.09 vs. 0.87 kg/d) and hip width change (5.4 vs. 3.9 cm) compared with calves fed low MR and low starch with other treatments intermediate. From 0 to 112 d, calves fed high MR had 9% greater body weight gain and 4% greater hip width change than calves fed low MR, yet nutrient efficiency was similar despite 80% more MR intake than calves fed low MR. Additionally, calves fed high-starch starter achieved 18% greater body weight gain and 17% greater hip width than calves fed low starch starter overall, a more than 2-fold greater response than the effect of MR feeding rate.  相似文献

Pain management during and following disbudding procedures has been studied extensively, though few studies have evaluated wound healing following cautery disbudding in dairy calves. The purpose of this study was to observe wound healing following cautery disbudding with or without treatment using a topical aluminum-based aerosol bandage (ALU) in preweaned dairy calves. Dairy calves were disbudded within the first 3 wk of life using a standard cautery disbudding protocol. The ALU treatment was randomly allocated to the right or left horn bud within each animal. The outcomes measured were lesion score (LS) and wound diameter (WD). The LS was evaluated on a scale of 1 to 3, with LS = 1 representing normal healing without a scab or exudate, LS = 2 having the presence of a scab, and LS = 3 showing the presence of wound exudate. Lesion score and WD were evaluated on a weekly basis following dehorning for 3 wk. A total of 209 animals completed the study. No difference was observed in LS between groups during the first 2 wk postdisbudding, but the proportion of LS = 3 on wk 3 postdisbudding was greater for the control group when compared with ALU (17 vs. 8%, respectively). During wk 1 and 2 postdisbudding, the odds of having delayed healing, or a LS ≥2, were similar for both groups. However, the odds tended to be different at wk 3 postdisbudding with control disbudding sites being 1.42 times more likely to have delayed healing than ALU. In wk 3, WD was 1 mm smaller in the treatment group compared with the control, and treatment decreased diameter over time compared with controls. Overall, once abnormal wound healing was observed, the likelihood of having abnormal wound healing the following week was increased. However, treatment with ALU diminished this effect on delayed healing during the follow-up period. Based on these results, the use of ALU improved wound healing following cautery disbudding of preweaned dairy calves.  相似文献
