There has been increased interest on the impact of mobile devices such as PDAs and Tablet PCs in introducing new pedagogical
approaches and active learning experiences. We propose an intelligent system that efficiently addresses the inherent subjectivity
in student perception of note taking and information retrieval. We employ the idea of cross indexing the digital ink notes
with matching electronic documents in the repository. Latent Semantic Indexing is used to perform document and page level
indexing. Thus for each retrieved document, the user can go over to the relevant pages that match the query. Techniques to
handle problems such as polysemy (multiple meanings of a word) in large databases, document folding and no match for query
are discussed. We tested our system for its performance, usability and effectiveness in the learning process. The results
from the exploratory studies reveal that the proposed system provides a highly enhanced student learning experience, thereby
facilitating high test scores.

Nilesh Patel is Assistant Professor in the department of Computer Science and Engineering at Oakland University, MI. He received his PhD and MS in Computer Science from Wayne State University, MI in 1997 and 1993. He is interested in Multimedia Information Processing - specifically audio and video indexing, retrieval and event detection, Pattern Recognition, Distributed Data Mining in a heterogeneous environment, and Computer Vision with special interest in medical imaging. Dr. Patel has also served in the automotive sector for several years and developed interest in Telematics and Mobile Computing. Bruce Maxim has worked as a software engineer for the past 31 years. He is a member of the Computer and Information Science faculty at the University of Michigan-Dearborn since 1985. He serves as the computing laboratory supervisor and head of the undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Information Systems. He has created more than 15 Computer and Information Science courses dealing with software engineering, game design, artificial intelligence, user interface design, web engineering, software quality, and computer programming. He has authored or co-authored four books on programming and software engineering. He has most recently served on the pedagogy subcommittee for Software Engineering 2004 and contributed to the IDGA Game Curriculum Framework 2008 guidelines. William I. Grosky is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Science at University of Michigan - Dearborn, Dearborn, Michigan. The convergence analysis of multigrid methods for boundary element equations arising from negative-order pseudo-differential operators is quite different from the usual finite element multigrid analysis for elliptic partial differential equations. In this paper, we study the convergence of geometrical multigrid methods for solving large-scale, data-sparse boundary element equations. In this work we present a new algorithm for accelerating the colour bilateral filter based on a subsampling strategy working in the spatial domain. The base idea is to use a suitable subset of samples of the entire kernel in order to obtain a good estimation of the exact filter values. The main advantages of the proposed approach are that it has an excellent trade‐off between visual quality and speed‐up, a very low memory overhead is required and it is straightforward to implement on the GPU allowing real‐time filtering. We show different applications of the proposed filter, in particular efficient cross‐bilateral filtering, real‐time edge‐aware image editing and fast video denoising. 为了能够掌握动态目标的飞行特性,提出了一种模拟目标动态雷达散射截面(RCS)的方法。该方法根据雷达目标航迹相关数据,结合测量坐标系和目标坐标系转换原理,采用多层快速多极子算法,仿真建立了目标静态下的RCS数据库。同时,通过编程实现了目标动态RCS模拟程序,并通过分析得到动态目标RCS曲线。该结果表明,雷达目标的动态RCS模拟对掌握目标的飞行特性起到了一定的作用。该方法可以代替RCS实际测量过程,具有实现简单、操作性好等优点。 相似文献

The number of immigrants in the United States is at an all time high, yet psychologists have largely ignored the domain of immigrant health. This article considers 1 aspect of immigrant health, risk for pediatric injury. A sample of over 5,000 5-year-old children from impoverished families was studied; approximately 13% had immigrant mothers. Children of immigrants had a significantly lower rate of injury in the prior year. This was particularly true of non-White children of immigrants. Three possible mediators for this finding--assistance with parenting, parenting style, and health care accessibility--were considered, but none explained the difference. Research on cross-modal performance in nonhuman primates is limited to a small number of sensory modalities and testing methods. To broaden the scope of this research, the authors tested capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) for a seldom-studied cross-modal capacity in nonhuman primates, auditory-visual recognition. Monkeys were simultaneously played 2 video recordings of a face producing different vocalizations and a sound recording of 1 of the vocalizations. Stimulus sets varied from naturally occurring conspecific vocalizations to experimentally controlled human speech stimuli. The authors found that monkeys preferred to view face recordings that matched presented vocal stimuli. Their preference did not differ significantly across stimulus species or other stimulus features. However, the reliability of the latter set of results may have been limited by sample size. From these results, the authors concluded that capuchin monkeys exhibit auditory-visual cross-modal perception of conspecific vocalizations.
