Differences in Sterol Composition between Male and Female Gonads of Dominant Limpet Species

The present study demonstrated here for the first time that there are statistically significant differences in sterol composition between male and female gonads of the dominant limpets Cellana grata and Cellana toreuma, which are intertidal gastropods. Among 11 different sterols identified in this study, unusually high levels (11.2–19.8% of total sterols) of the Δ⁸-sterols 5α-cholest-8-en-3β-ol (zymostenol) and 5α-cholesta-8,24-dien-3β-ol (zymosterol), which have never been reported in aquatic invertebrate gonads, were present in only the male gonads.

Poly(vinyl acetate)/polyacrylate semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks,part 1: Synthesis and polymerization kinetics

Bulk photopolymerization was used to synthesize a series of semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (s‐IPN) based on linear poly(vinyl acetate) and crosslinked N‐butyl acrylate/1,6‐hexandiol diacrylate (HDDA) copolymer. Different formulations were used by varying the monoacrylate/diacrylate molar ratio and the linear polymer concentration. The polymerization kinetics was studied as a function of the s‐IPN composition by FTIR spectroscopy. It was observed that the reaction rate increases by increasing the linear polymer amount. This effect is much more pronounced in the reaction mixtures with a higher diacrylate concentration, playing a key role the restricted mobility of the macroradicals involved in the bimolecular termination. The maximum conversion increases regularly with linear polymer concentration in the blend and resulted to be very high, ranging from 95 to 98%. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermally stable polyureas and poly(urea‐imide)s containing zinc and nickel napthtrien complexes

Two new napthtrien metal complexes, MNapth₂trien; where M = Zn and Ni, were synthesized and used for the synthesis of metal‐containing polyureas and poly(urea‐imide)s. MNapth₂trien underwent polymerization reaction with two diisocyanates, namely, 4,4′‐diphenylmethane diisocyanate and isophorone diisocyanate to yield polyureas. Poly(urea‐imide)s were obtained by the synthesis of metal‐containing isocyanate‐terminated polyurea prepolymers from the reaction between MNapth₂trien and excess diisocyanates, which could then undergo further reaction with different dianhydrides. The dianhydrides used were pyromellitic dianhydride and benzophenone‐3,3′,4,4′‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride. The polymers were characterized by infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, elemental analysis, X‐ray diffraction, solubility, and viscosity. Glass transition temperature of the polymers was obtained from differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Thermal stability of polymers was studied by thermogravimetric analysis in air. It was found that the resulting metal‐containing polymers exhibited good thermal stability. Initial decomposition temperatures of the polymers depend on the amount of MNapth₂trien in the polymer composition. Char yields of metal‐containing poly(urea‐imide)s are higher than those of metal‐containing polyureas. Most metal‐containing polymers show good solubility in organic solvents. Shore D hardness test indicates that metal‐containing poly(urea‐imide)s are hard materials. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009     

In vitro and in vivo Staining Characteristics of Small,Fluorescent, Aβ42‐Binding D‐Enantiomeric Peptides in Transgenic AD Mouse Models

Plaque visualisation : We identified three different D ‐enantiomeric peptides that bind to Alzheimer's amyloid β (Aβ1‐42). As there is currently no definitive pre‐mortem diagnosis for Alzheimer's disease, we investigated the peptides' suitability as molecular probes for in vivo imaging in transgenic mouse models.
