Looking ahead: The future of psychology and APA.

While serving as APA president, I very much enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the variety and complexity of psychology as a discipline and practice. In particular, I became interested in various emerging directions and future possibilities. This article, based on my 2007 presidential address at the APA annual convention, summarizes my observations and reflections and attempts to present a reasonably compelling portrait of psychology's future and that of the APA. I hope that this overview will stimulate others to gaze into their own crystal balls and use their insights to construct an even more lively and vibrant psychology. The Golden Flea Award.

Comments on the original article by R. C. Atkinson (see record 1977-28549-001), which discusses psychology's progress during the last quarter century and its potential for significant scientific advances in the future. In the interests of balanced discussion, this letter brings attention to a lesser known award-the Golden Flea Award-that is given annually for the year's most nit-picking criticism of American science. The sunshine revolution

People working to increase the use of renewables — the solar people - will play an increasingly important role as the oil reserves dwindle and the nuclear reactors grow old and fail. The demand on us to “deliver” will increase. We may find a lot of new allies. That may give us power. But are we willing to use our power to secure The Sunshine Revolution?

The reduction of uncertainty concerning future pain.

Ss received series of electric shocks to the forearm in which the temporal schedule and the sequence of shock intensities were associated with varying levels of randomness or uncertainty. The Ss were permitted an instrumental response which produced, in advance, information concerning 1 or both of these aspects of the shocks. Such information functioned as a strong positive reinforcement for most Ss. Instrumental response rate was a significant increasing function of the degree of uncertainty associated with the shock series, and occurred significantly more often for information concerning the temporal occurrence of shock than for its intensity. Quality and reliability research into the next century

The paper examines the research needed to advance the science of Q&R and in particular looks at that required to overcome the present crisis in reliability prediction and assessment. Areas requiring special attention are methods for the objective grading of product and organizational quality, research into human error causes and prevention, better modelling of reliability for prediction purposes, the discovery and use of unreliability diagnostic parameters, and better understanding and application of accelerated testing. Accelerated testing, screening and reliability prediction should all be more failure-mode-specific than they are currently. Reliability physics should pay increased attention to the precise effect material and geometric defects have on device life.

基于最优未来时间步求解非稳态导热反问题

应用顺序函数法(sequential function specificationmethod,SFSM)研究利用未来时刻的温度测量信息反演非稳态导热系统表面热流问题。分析表面热流反演过程中未来时间步的优化问题,依据残差原理建立最优未来时间步的估算方法,并讨论了温度测量误差和测点位置对未来时间步的优化结果及表面热流反演结果的影响。数值试验结果表明,采用该文方法能够在综合考虑温度测量误差水平和温度测点位置等相关因素的基础上,恰当地选择未来时间步数,从而有效地改善表面热流的反演效果。
