Editorial.     
Psychology, Public Policy, and Law focuses on the links between psychology as a science, relevant information derived from related disciplines as sciences, and public policy and law. It will publish articles that (1) critically evaluate the actual and potential contributions of psychology to public policy and legal issues, (2) assess the desirability of different public policy and legal alternatives in light of the scientific knowledge base in psychology, (3) articulate research needs that address public policy and legal issues for which there is currently insufficient theoretical and empirical knowledge, and (4) examine public policy and legal issues relating to the conduct of psychology and of related disciplines where relevant to psychology. The goals for the journal are to (1) provide a multidisciplinary forum for scholarship and interchange relevant to the mission of the journal, (2) provide a forum for the publications of comprehensive, scholarly articles that critically consider theoretical, conceptual, and doctrinal issues or that critically review the literature on topics relevant to the mission of the journal, and (3) provide a forum for the publication of comprehensive, scholarly articles that report the results of programs of research or large-scale empirical studies relevant to the mission of the journal. This issue, like most law reviews and social science journals, presents articles that were unsolicited and are unrelated. The first article, using the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Foucha v. Louisiana as the vehicle, critically explores how mental illness should be defined for various legal purposes and argues the need for the application of a new constitutional principle to limit state power to involuntary hospitalize—therapeutic appropriateness. The second article then considers the U.S. Supreme Court's social science analyses in two juvenile death penalty cases, demonstrates that the Court's approach is in error, and presents an alternate analysis that the author asserts the Court should be using. The issue concludes with an article that focuses on the potential harmfulness that may result to society from censorship of sexually explicit material. Strategies for Building Multicultural Competence in Mental Health and Educational Settings is an excellent resource designed for mental health professionals who may lack knowledge and expertise in working with diverse clients. It provides hands-on strategies and suggestions in a variety of contexts, using the Multicultural Guidelines as a framework. This book is strongly recommended for clinicians working with culturally diverse populations. The Surgeon General's report Mental Health: Culture, Race and Ethnicity (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2001) clearly demonstrates the disparity in the mental health care of racial and ethnic minorities as compared with Whites. This book is useful not only to novices exploring diversity but also to those who are already cross-culturally competent. The authors successfully apply the APA Multicultural Guidelines in clinical practice and educational, training, and organizational settings while providing specific strategies for clinicians. P. B. Zeldow (2009) presents a series of vignettes that make a compelling case for the role of clinical judgment and for the claim that the knowledge of a credentialed practitioner stand up against the credentialed knowledge of scientific research. This comment discusses how the dispute between scientific knowledge and clinical judgment is not unique to psychotherapy but has been extensively discussed in other disciplines, especially medicine and education. Two models of science and practice are presented: a model based on Aristotle's (1999) distinction between techne and phronesis and H. L. Dreyfus and S. E. Dreyfus's (1986) five-stage model of skill acquisition. Both a scientific knowledge base and a model of clinical practice that value the judgment of the expert practitioner are necessary for psychology to be a learned profession. Nevertheless, the gap between science and practice may never be fully closed but will always have irresolvable conflicts that can only be contained. As groupware and workflow technologies become widely accepted, it is important to identify and clarify best practice at all stages of the development of those systems. One approach to the promulgation of best practice is to develop clear and effective guidelines for application in system development.This paper is primarily concerned with the identification of guidelines to drive the design and implementation of one class of groupware — collaborative writing systems. In particular, consideration is given to guidelines for systems which support groups of distributed collaborating authors working asynchronously.Three relevant areas are investigated. First, social and integration issues of generic groupware are presented. Second, the design of existing collaborative writing tools is addressed. Third, models of both individual writers and collaborative writing tasks are discussed. Guidelines are drawn from each area.The guidelines have been adopted in the design of MILO, a collaborative writing system. MILO is briefly described and the way in which the guidelines have been implemented in MILO is reviewed. In conclusion, insights gained from informal observations of MILO in use for both single and multiple author tasks are presented.  相似文献

A development of the Mondex system was undertaken using Event-B and its associated proof tools. An incremental approach was used whereby the refinement between the abstract specification of the system and its detailed design was verified through a series of refinements. The consequence of this incremental approach was that we achieved a very high degree of automatic proof. The essential features of our development are outlined. Presents the American Psychological Association Guidelines for psychological practice with older adults. The present document is intended to assist psychologists in evaluating their own readiness for working clinically with older adults and in seeking and using appropriate education and training to increase their knowledge, skills, and experience relevant to this area of practice, when desired and appropriate. The specific goals of these guidelines are to provide practitioners with (a) a frame of reference for engaging in clinical work with older adults and (b) basic information and further references in the areas of attitudes, general aspects of aging, clinical issues, assessment, intervention, consultation, and continuing education and training relative to work with older adults. Reports an error in "Guidelines for therapy and counselling with women" by Jean Pettifor, Lorna Cammaert, Carolyn Larsen and Elinor Ames (Canadian Psychology Psychologie Canadienne, 1980[Oct], Vol 21[4], 185-186). The order of several lines of type describing Guidelines 6, 7, and 8 was scrambled. The revised Guidelines for 6, 7, and 8 are presented. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1982-01932-001.) Presents the 10 guidelines from the document Guidelines for Therapy and Counselling with Women, which was approved by the Canadian Psychological Association Board of Directors for the purpose of providing elaboration, clarification, and application of certain existing ethical standards to that particular client group. In the full document, each of the guidelines (e.g., the therapist does not treat the female client as a sex object) is written in the form of principles of good practice and is accompanied by one or more cases that illustrate violation of the guideline.
