The development and maturation of humanitarian psychology.

Humanitarian psychological support as an organized field is relatively young. Pioneers in the field were involved primarily in providing psychological support to refugees and internally displaced persons in conflict and nonconflict situations. This article describes basic principles for the design of psychological support programs and interventions. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) began a psychological support program in 1991. The IFRC chose psychological first aid as its model for implementation in developing countries. Psychological first aid fits all the principles for psychological support program design and is adapted to individual communities. The first generation of psychological support programs differed dramatically depending on the countries in which they were developed. A second generation of psychological support programs evolved in response to the earthquake/tsunami of December 26, 2004. The Inter-Agency Standing Committee international guidelines consolidated the advances of second-generation programs and provided a clear indication of the wide acceptance of the importance of psychological support. A glimpse is provided of the third generation of psychological support programs, and an admonition is made for a more empirical evaluation of the effectiveness of interventions. INHIBITION OF BEER-SPOILAGE LACTIC ACID BACTERIA BY NISIN

149 strains of bacteria, mostly brewery contaminants able to spoil wort or beer, and 12 brewing strains of yeast (8 ale and 4 lager strains) have been screened using a well-test assay for sensitivity to the food preservative, Nisin (E234), Nisin inhibited growth of 92% of the gram-positive strains, predominantly lactic acid bacteria of the genera Lactobacillus and Pediococcus. In contrast, all 32 gram-negative strains tested, except 3 Flavobacter strains, were Nisin-resistant; in addition none of the brewing yeasts showed Nisin-sensitivity. Therefore. Nisin has potential applications in preventing spoilage of worts or beers by lactic acid bacteria.     

Reply to Silverman.

Responds to commentary by I. Silverman (see record 2007-08963-001) entitled "Review of Pure types are rare": Comment on book review. I do not think that either one of us will change his position, and therefore it is up to the interested (yet disinterested) reader to adjudicate our dispute by checking Professor Silverman's book and his references. In the process, the reader will be forced to consider the thought-provoking implications for our mental health system of some of the incidents which the author describes so vividly, and that will not be a bad thing. There is one point, however, which is worth pursuing further here, for Professor Silverman persists in an elementary statistical fallacy. Let us take the situation which he cites, where the base rate for diagnosing schizophrenia is 50%. Suppose with the same base rate the degree of agreement is in fact 53%; this is far above chance level. It must be emphasized, however, that the 53% agreement under discussion came not from a study where the base rate for diagnosing schizophrenia was 50%, but from one where the conditions were far more stringent since the base rate for diagnosing schizophrenia was around 20%. Process optimisation in sunflower oil extraction by supercritical CO2

A continuous process for the extraction of sunflower oil using supercritical CO₂, featuring multiple extractors, one oil separator and three cascaded CO₂ recovery vessels operating at different pressures, was devised and studied. For every single equipment of the plant making up the process a mathematical model was built. Experimental tests—consisting in measurements of oil solubility in supercritical CO₂—were carried out in a laboratory-scale apparatus to characterise the behaviour of sunflower oil in the separation from the supercritical fluid. The mathematical model of the whole process was coded in the commercial gPROMS process modelling environment where both its simulation and optimisation—this latter assuming the overall oil production cost as the objective function—were carried out. The process- and economics-related results are discussed and compared with those obtained with traditional and cold-pressing extraction.     

Properties of Edible Films from Total Milk Protein

The mechanical properties and water vapor permeability of edible films made from various total milk proteins (TMPs) were investigated. Two TMPs obtained from nonfat dry milk (NDM) by removing lactose and three TMPs obtained from a commercial source were studied. Lactose was extracted from NDM by ultrafiltration or suspension in ethanol followed by filtration. TMP concentrate obtained by ultrafiltration (UF) produced films with the lowest water vapor permeability (WVP) and the highest tensile strength at break. Commercial TMP concentrates produced films more ductile than those from the UF-TMP or retentate from ethanol extraction. Further research is needed to improve mechanical properties of UF-TMP films without increasing the WVP.

我院大学生吸烟调查分析

不良的生活方式和个人行为对健康是一种“自我制造的危害”。吸烟有害世人皆知,然而,近年来吸烟大军更表现为年青化、女性化的特点,青年大学生们吸烟也较普遍,烟草危害在吸烟者身上表现也很明显,已给国家造成极大的疾病负担;青年大学生吸烟还有漫延之势,必须积极开设健康教育,传授保健知识,让他们自己起来同不良的生活习惯作斗争,同时,还必须制定有效的行政干预措施,才能把吸烟带来的毒害控制在最小范围。     

Evidence for biotic control of Australian reservoir phytoplankton communities and the potential for applied biomanipulation

Although some concerns have been expressed with respect to the applicability of biomanipulation to Australian reservoirs and other inland waters, no major obstacles were found in this review. The previous doubts stimulated research, which has provided evidence for unexpected mechanisms of food web interactions, such as positive effects of small copepods on planktonic algae, higher than usual grazing potential of cladoceran communities, and direct positive effects of planktivores on phytoplankton. Further research into zooplankton-cyanobacteria interactions should indicate how widespread is the previously reported ability of some southern hemisphere crustaceans to benefit at a population level from feeding on cyanobacteria. Quantitative fisheries acoustics, which has not been widely used in biomanipulation trials before, is a promising new tool in the assessment of the biomass of planktivorous fish in the pelagic zone of reservoirs.
