Dogs' ( Canis familaris ) responsiveness to human pointing gestures.

In a series of 3 experiments, dogs (Canisfamiliaris) were presented with variations of the human pointing gesture; gestures with reversed direction of movement, cross-pointing, and different arm extensions. Dogs performed at above chance level if they could see the hand (and index finger) protruding from the human body contour. If these minimum requirements were not accessible, dogs still could rely on the body position of the signaler. The direction of movement of the pointing arm did not influence the performance. In summary, these observations suggest that dogs are able to rely on relatively novel gestural forms of the human communicative pointing gesture and that they are able to comprehend to some extent the referential nature of human pointing. John L. Kennedy (1913–1984).

John Lyon Kennedy received his doctorate in 1937 for his dissertation on the neurological basis of movement perception. His many career steps included psychical research at Stanford; work for the Office of Scientific Research and Development; and cutting edge involvement in the evolution of human engineering from applied experimental psychology, biomechanics, and engineering psychology. He joined the Rand Corporation, where he established the Systems Research Laboratory. He accepted as a challenge the question of how to study the behavior of a total air defense system—as a system. Other accomplishments included being the chair of the Psychology Department at Princeton from 1958 to 1966, while also working with a number of external organizations, including the System Development Corporation, the Peace Corps, the Psychological Corporation, and the National Science Foundation. He finished his teaching career as a professor of management at California State University at Northridge, but continued as a Fulbright Hays Lecturer at the Vienna Institute of Commerce. Antimicrobial activity of recombinant human lactoferrin from <Emphasis Type="Italic">Aspergillus awamori</Emphasis>, human milk lactoferrin and their hydrolysates

The antibacterial activity of human lactoferrin from milk (hLF), recombinant human lactoferrin from Aspergillus awamori (rhLF) and their hydrolysates obtained with pepsin was investigated against Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Enteritidis and Listeria monocytogenes. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were determined for all the bacteria and the proteins assayed. Taking into account the MICs found for both lactoferrins studied, we can say that they behave very similarly, except for L. monocytogenes for which rhLF was more active. We studied the effect that heat treatments exerted on the antibacterial activity of the two types of lactoferrin and the only heat treatment that had a negative effect on that activity was 85 °C for 10 min. The activity of hLF and rhLF in UHT milk and whey against E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes, was also assayed. Our results showed a reduction in the number of viable cells for both microorganisms when were incubated with rhLF or hLF, but this decrease was lower than in broth media.

Riebel thinks that these authors have performed a valuable service by reminding us that the environmental problems that threaten people and this planet are human in origin and by calling on psychologists to participate in environmental restoration. Psychologists are uniquely positioned to provide expertise critical to this complex task. They understand the defense mechanisms, such as denial, dissociation, and rationalization, that permit destruction of the earth to continue almost unchecked. They study attitudes and social influence, the types and schedules of reinforcement for behavior change, motivation, cultural beliefs and roles, organizational structures and impediments to change. Understanding the Selectivity Mechanism of the Human Asialoglycoprotein Receptor (ASGP-R) toward Gal- and Man-type Ligands for Predicting Interactions with Exogenous Sugars

A practical approach for addressing the computer simulation of protein-carbohydrate interactions is described here. An articulated computational protocol was set up and validated by checking its ability to predict experimental data, available in the literature, and concerning the selectivity shown by the Carbohydrate Recognition Domain (CRD) of the human asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGP-R) toward Gal-type ligands. Some required features responsible for the interactions were identified. Subsequently the same protocol was applied to monomer sugar molecules that constitute the building blocks for alginates and ulvans. Such sugar polymers may supply a low-cost source of rare sugars with a potential impact on several industrial applications, from pharmaceutical to fine chemical industry. An example of their applicative exploitation could be given by their use in developing biomaterial with adhesion properties toward hepatocytes, through interaction with the ASGP-R. Such a receptor has been already proposed as a target for exogenous molecules, specifically in the case of hepatocytes, for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The DOCK5.2 program was used to search optimal locations of the above ligands of interest into CRD binding site and to roughly estimate interaction energies. Finally, the binding ΔG of theoretical protein-ligand complexes was estimated by using the DelPhi program in which the solvation free energy is accounted for with a continuum solvent model, by solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. The structure analysis of the obtained complexes and their ΔG values suggest that one of the sugar monomers of interest shows the desired characteristics.
