This paper proposes an experimental approach for evaluating the surface roughness of the CFRP parts produced by high speed CNC trimming and high speed robotic trimming under various cutting conditions. A comparison is made between the surface roughnesses obtained by the two processes. The results obtained show that, the measured profiles obtained from high speed robotic trimming are dominated by a large trajectory deviation, as compared to machine tool trimming results. After the trajectory deviation effect is discounted, the results show that for the +45° ply orientation, the surface quality obtained through high speed robotic trimming is similar to what is obtained with the CNC machine. Furthermore, a significant relationship was observed between the surface quality and the ply orientation, whatever the machining process and the cutting conditions employed. The −45° ply orientation represents the worst case in terms of surface roughness, whatever the machining process. It is 4 times higher compared with that of +45° ply orientations,The results also show that the effect of cutting conditions on surface quality is significant for both machining processes tested.  相似文献

The non-traditional machining of particulate reinforced metal matrix composites is relatively new. However, researchers seem to pay more attention in this field recently as the traditional machining of particulate reinforced metal matrix composites is very complex. This research investigates different non-traditional machining, such as electro-discharge, laser beam, abrasive water jet, electro-chemical and electro-chemical discharge machining of this composite materials. The machining mechanism, material removal rate/machining speed and surface finish have been analysed for every machining process. This analysis clearly shows that vaporisation, melting, chemical dissolution and mechanical erosion are the main material removal mechanisms during non-traditional machining. The thermal degradation and the presence of reinforcement particles mainly damage the machined surface. The understanding of electro-discharge, laser beam and abrasive water jet machining is more developed than that of electro-chemical and electro-chemical discharge machining for particulate reinforced MMC.  相似文献

It is difficult and challenging to achieve uniform nanoscale surface finish in the contact zone, particularly on freeform (or sculptured) surfaces having different curvatures at different locations. Femoral (or, Knee joint component) is one of such biomedical freeform component which has complex profile along its curvature. Surface conditions of a femoral decide the life of the implant and they play a crucial role in its functionality. The variation in surface roughness of the femoral should be minimum in the contact zone. For this purpose, a special tooling is being proposed for rotational magnetorheological abrasive flow finishing (R-MRAFF) process. A negative replica of the workpiece (knee joint) as a tool (or a fixture) is used so that the medium flow velocity in the fluid flow channel is almost constant (or minimum possible variations) along the medium flow direction. It is able to do differential finishing also along the curvature. In addition, pulsating magnetic field has been used to generate vibrations in the medium in the finishing zone so that the possibility of fresh abrasive particles interacting with the surface of femoral is high. The surface finish has been achieved ranging from 26 nm to 62 nm using the proposed finishing technique and negative replica of the workpiece (femoral) as a fixture.  相似文献
