On basic definitions of unified fracture mechanics terminology

The adoption of unified fracture mechanics terminology (UFMT) will promote efficient communication between specialists in different fields of fracture research, harmonization of national and international standards relating to fracture mechanics, and last but not least improvement of the existing methodology for teaching and education in fatigue and fracture. In this paper the definitions of some basic and related terms included in different standards on fracture mechanics terminology are confronted with one another. Alternative definitions of the same terms are offered. By this strategy the author tries to show that the definitions of basic and related terms appropriate for the UFMT should emerge as a consequence of harmonizing a crack model with an actual crack and then both taken together with a fracture model, laboratory test methods, and failure assessment codes.Published in Problemy Prochonsti, No. 1, pp. 17–29, January, 1996.This paper is published as a matter of discussion.

2006年10月1日起实施的《清洁生产标准钢铁行业》(HJ/T189-2006)存在着一些不足之处,如不及时修订,将无法适应“十一五”期间钢铁工业的发展形势和清洁生产形势,在某种程度上还很容易对国内钢铁企业造成误导,而且会产生一些负面不良影响。根据目前我国钢铁工业的发展形势和国内外钢铁企业已经达到的实际清洁生产水平,就其存在的问题和今后的修订谈了一些看法。

从碳素结构钢热轧钢带各向异性的事实出发 ,阐述不同试样位向导致同一钢带不同的拉伸性能 ,因而影响钢带合格与否的判定。在全面考虑钢带和焊管标准的基础上 ,提出解决钢带判定的两种方法。同时 ,还对标准中存在的缺点作了说明 ,提出改进意见 ,供标准修订时参考。     

How Meta-Analysis Increases Statistical Power.

One of the most frequently cited reasons for conducting a meta-analysis is the increase in statistical power that it affords a reviewer. This article demonstrates that fixed-effects meta-analysis increases statistical power by reducing the standard error of the weighted average effect size (T?.) and, in so doing, shrinks the confidence interval around T?.. Small confidence intervals make it more likely for reviewers to detect nonzero population effects, thereby increasing statistical power. Smaller confidence intervals also represent increased precision of the estimated population effect size. Computational examples are provided for 3 effect-size indices: d (standardized mean difference), Pearson's r, and odds ratios. Random-effects meta-analyses also may show increased statistical power and a smaller standard error of the weighted average effect size. However, the authors demonstrate that increasing the number of studies in a random-effects meta-analysis does not always increase statistical power.
