Domestic Wastewater Treatment Systems (DWTS) are often cited as significant sources of pollution in rural catchments. A mass balance based model has been developed to determine annual nutrient loading from individual DWTS into rivers in Ireland. The transport and attenuation of nitrogen and phosphorus in DWTS effluent to groundwater and surface water has been formulated using the results from field research in Ireland, as well as being informed by other international studies. Conceptually the model splits the transport of nutrients to the river into three pathways: direct to surface water (for areas of inadequate percolation), a near surface (subsoil) pathway, and a groundwater pathway. The model quantifies the net nutrient contribution for each DWTS and has been incorporated into a broader source load apportionment catchment model which includes agricultural inputs, thereby enabling the relative risk of nutrient pollution from DWTS in a catchment to be defined. 相似文献

The oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) is an important factor in H2 production via dark fermentation however its effect over microbial diversity in an acidogenic sludge has not, been well studied. This work studies the effect of ORP controlled by hydrogen peroxide and potassium ferricyanide on continuous hydrogen production and microbial diversity in an acidogenic sludge fed (HRT 12 h and pH 5.5) with glycerol. Results show that the more oxidizing ORP control environment (?540 mV) improves H2 yield by 50–70% (0.31–0.51 molH2/mol glycerol) over non-ORP control conditions. Oxidizing ORP values were shown to enrich microorganisms of the genus Clostridium, which have been linked to high H2 yields. Therefore, controlling ORP in an acidogenic sludge was shown to directly modify microbial diversity at the genus level, and could likely to indirectly regulate metabolic function. A slight change in the level-volume relation for an accountability tank for a large amount of plutonium nitrate solution (PuN) was observed at the Plutonium Conversion Development Facility (PCDF) in the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corp. (PNC), Tokai Works. From the results of annual tank re-calibrations for the plutonium receiving tank from 1985 to 1992 using the incremental feed of nitric acid as the density standard, it became clear that the relation between the level and the volume changed slightly, and the rate of the change was a linear function of operating time. Also it became clear that the change was linear in relation to the level. In the PCDF, the cumulative change in the volume at the nominal level was evaluated to be 0.1% during 8 years' operation. It was also evaluated that the repeatability of the re-calibration is much better than 0.1%. A reasonable frequency of tank re-calibration is once every 5 years. 相似文献
