Faustman (1982, see record 1982-28927-001) is incorrect when he states that "practitioners who choose to sue clients to recover fees are openly inviting countersuit by the client", (p. 213). I urge colleagues in other states to examine their confidentiality statutes for similar exemptions, and I admonish Faustman for not sufficiently investigating the legal issue. Reports an error in the original article by Joseph Weitz and Seymour Adler (Journal of Applied Psychology. Vol. 58(2) Oct 1973, 219-224). A sentence on page 223 was incorrectly set. The corrected sentence is provided. (The following abstract of this article originally appeared in record 1974-12088-001.) Investigated the problem of when to stop training on a simulator and the disadvantages of simulator fidelity. 50 male and 50 female undergraduates were either overtrained, not overtrained, or not trained at all (controls) in a collating task with 3 or 5 racks. Results were not significant, but the hypothesized outcomes were in the predicted direction: (a) for males, overtraining on collating either 3 or 5 racks led to slightly poorer performance on the real task (collating 8 racks) than for the comparable groups with no overtraining; and (b) for females, overtraining on both the 3- and 5-rack tasks improved real task performance over the control condition, but only in the overtrained condition. Of the 2424 persons who qualified for certification without examination, 161 were 30 years or under, 1591 between 31 and 45, and 672 were 46 and over. 408 were California born. 1133 have the PhD, 148 the EdD, 785 the MA, 193 the MS, and 165 have other degrees or training. 49% are employed by educational institutions, 24% are in private practice, 13% in hospitals and correctional institutions, and 13% with other organizations. Few below-standard activities result from deliberate choice. Psychologists in practice should have regular contact with some of their colleagues; the level of performance will be higher if psychologists do not operate in isolation from professional colleagues. Institutionalizing small collaborating groups of psychologists is desirable on the assumption that the groups would take up at the point where training procedure left off. Other advantages are increased opportunities for discussing problems, clarifying issues, getting help, checking judgments with others, and a continuous re-examination of one's own professional technique. Reviews the book, Dissociation: Clinical and theoretical perspectives by Steven Jay Lynn and Judith W. Rhue (see record 1994-98908-000). In this book, the editors' stated purpose was to provide "a book that would be at once authoritative and provide virtually comprehensive coverage of important aspects of the topic," and they have largely achieved their goal. Because Dissociation is so comprehensive, there is in essence "something for everyone"; in turn, there may be sections of the book which are of less relevance to many readers. For example, clinicians who are primarily concerned about issues of diagnosis and treatment may find the discussion of the theoretical underpinnings of hypnosis and dissociation less than helpful. The sections on diagnosis and treatment, in turn, are of an overview nature; a clinician who is interested in more detailed discussions of these issues will have to go to the original sources. Nevertheless, this book might well be recommended as required reading for clinicians and researchers alike because of its very broad scope. The various authors address important questions which clinicians and researchers should consider. Dissociation makes clear that the concept of dissociation is one of the most complicated and misunderstood concepts in psychology. The history of the concept itself is reviewed at length in the book. Nevertheless, Lynn and Rhue have provided a resource in which a wide variety of perspectives of both a clinical and research nature are presented in a comprehensive yet accessible manner. Rapid and successful introduction of new products is a potentially significant source of competitive advantage for manufacturing firms. Organizations need to identify and manage those critical elements of the product development process (PDP) that have a positive influence on new product success. This research identifies the distinctive product development and design practices, policies and tools currently followed by companies (Navy contractors) that participated in an empirical research study known as the Best Manufacturing Practices Program. A summary of practices reported in the case studies is compiled using content analysis techniques, and the most interesting practices by individual companies are highlighted. We find numerous examples of sophisticated CAD techniques being used to enhance the development process, including expert system design advisers, computer simulation, and design databases. Companies are emphasizing the design policies of concurrent engineering and teamwork, and documenting design process knowledge into design manuals. Company effort still appear focused primarily on the phase of detailed design rather than the concept selection phase.  相似文献

Comments on the article by Mark A. Stewart about the employment practices of psychiatrists (Amer. J. Psychiat., 1960, 117, 85). Thinking that the evil he finds in the employment practices of psychiatrists is a local matter, Stewart comments: "We would surely be amused, or horrified, if biology teachers were required to be 'evolutionists,' or if psychologists had to be 'behavioristically oriented'." Whether or not psychiatrists will be amused or horrified to find that their predicament is shared by psychologists, so far the reaction of psychologists to the policy of buying orthodoxy at the employment table has been blank. The question is raised by Stewart whether or not "requiring applicants to subscribe to a particular theory may be an unfair employment practice, and as such could be challenged in the courts." Regardless of the legal niceties, I believe that a loyalty oath to the theory of psychoanalysis has about as much relevance as inquiry into whether or not the candidate has submitted himself to ritual circumcision, tattooing, or an appendectomy.
