The current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency protocol for testing the effectiveness of dispersants, the swirling flask test, has been found to give widely varying results in the hands of different testing laboratories. The sources of the ambiguities in the test were determined by considering several options in a rigorous systematic fashion. Options considered were variability among three operators and the variability and limitations of three analytical instruments in establishing a calibration curve for oil/dispersant mixtures. Other options included flask type, impact of operational variables (rotational speed, mixing time, settling time, and oil:dispersant ratio), development of a revised procedure for dispersant effectiveness, reproducibility and repeatability of the revised procedure, and development of selection criteria for screening of dispersants. A redesign of the test flask, which is characterized by having baffles with a stopcock at the bottom for sample collection, was deemed necessary to accomplish reproducibility within operator and between operators. The results indicated that the baffled flask provided a total coefficient of variation (variations within operator and between operators) less than 11% compared to above 100% in some cases for the swirling flask. 相似文献

The current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protocol for testing the effectiveness of dispersants for use in treating oil spills on the open water, the swirling flask test (SFT), has been found to give widely varying results in the hands of different testing laboratories. Part I addressed the sources of the ambiguities in the EPA SFT and the development of a new test referred to as the baffled flask test (BFT). In this part of the series, further experiments were conducted for estimating the repeatability of three operators in determining the effectiveness of 18 dispersants by both the EPA SFT and the BFT methods. Overall statistical analysis of the results indicated that the coefficient of variation by the BFT was only 7.8% compared to 21.9% for the EPA SFT. The mean percent effectiveness of the EPA SFT was only 19.7% as compared to 64.6% for the BFT. Proposed selection criteria for screening of dispersants for listing on the National Contingency Plan Product Schedule have been developed. 相似文献

Mango fruit has high commercial value; however, major postharvest losses are encountered throughout the supply chain due to postharvest diseases. These results lead to the search for natural fungicide for postharvest diseases control. The antifungal effects of five essential oils (thyme, clove, cinnamon, anise and vitex) were assessed by disc volatilisation method. Thyme oil vapours at 5 μL per Petriplate, and clove and cinnamon oil at 8 μL per Petriplate showed 100% growth inhibition of mango pathogens in vitro. GC/MS analysis of essential oil showed thymol (23.88), o‐cymol (23.88) and terpinolene (23.88) as the major constituents of thyme oil. Clove and cinnamon oils contain 3‐allyl‐2‐methoxyphenol (37.42%) and benzofuran 3‐methyl (17.97%), respectively. Thyme oil as a fumigant at 66.7 μL L?1 showed a significant (P < 0.05) inhibition on postharvest pathogens of mango fruits stored at 25 °C for 6 days. Results of our study suggest the possibility of using thyme oil as an alternate natural fungicide to manage postharvest diseases in mango. 相似文献

In this paper, we address the problem of planning the crude distillation unit charging process with oil blend. It is well known that blending and splitting operations can lead together to both non-linearities and concavities in mathematical programming models. As result, many proposed models for this problem use simplifying assumptions to keep the formulation computationally tractable. However, we show the existence of splitting operations that can lead to inconsistencies in the solutions obtained by the previous MILP models from the literature. Then, we propose a way to address this issue through an aggregated inventory capacity combined with a disaggregation algorithm. Furthermore, we develop a mathematical reformulation that improves the solving efficiency of the method. Then, we report experiments that show that the reformulated MILP model presents significant gains concerning linear relaxation gaps and run times, and the disaggregation algorithm leads to feasible solutions for all the tested instances. 相似文献

Model Predictive Control is ubiquitous in the chemical industry and offers great advantages over traditional controllers. Notwithstanding, new plants are being projected without taking into account how design choices affect the MPC’s ability to deliver better control and optimization. Thus a methodology to determine if a certain design option favours or hinders MPC performance would be desirable. This paper presents the economic MPC optimization index whose intended use is to provide a procedure to compare different designs for a given process, assessing how well they can be controlled and optimised by a zone constrained MPC. The index quantifies the economic benefits available and how well the plant performs under MPC control given the plant’s controllability properties, requirements and restrictions. The index provides a monetization measure of expected control performance.This approach assumes the availability of a linear state-space model valid within the control zone defined by the upper and lower bounds of each controlled and manipulated variable. We have used a model derived from simulation step tests as a practical way to use the method. The impact of model uncertainty on the methodology is discussed. An analysis of the effects of disturbances on the index illustrates how they may reduce profitability by restricting the ability of a MPC to reach dynamic equilibrium near process restrictions, which in turn increases product quality giveaway and costs. A case of study consisting of four alternative designs for a realistically sized crude oil atmospheric distillation plant is provided in order to demonstrate the applicability of the index. 相似文献

Three hundred and six Limousin young bulls (7 ± 1 months of age, initial body weight 273 ± 43 kg) were used to evaluate the effect of crude glycerine supplementation on animal performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality. Animals were assigned to three different diets: Control (0% of crude glycerine), G2 and G4 (2 and 4% of crude glycerine, respectively). The diets were administrated ad libitum for 240 days (final body weight 644 ± 24 kg). Average daily weight gain, average daily feed intake, the gain:feed ratio, ultrasound measures in vivo, carcass characteristics, pH, water holding capacity, drip losses, and cooking losses were not affected (P > 0.05) by diets. Diet decreased C16:0 (P < 0.01) and C16:1 (P < 0.05) contents in meat. The G4 meat showed lower C12:0, C14:0, C17:0, C18:0, C18:1, C18:2, C18:3, c9,t11-c18:2, C20:0 and C20:4 levels (P < 0.05) than control. The expanded fluid (EF) viscosity model was implemented and further developed for efficient integration into a commercial process simulator (VMGSim™). The model has three adjustable parameters per component and its inputs are density, pressure and low pressure gas viscosity. The model was adapted to use densities determined by the Rackett correlation (liquid phase) and the Advanced Peng–Robinson Equation of State (vapor phase). The enhanced EF model fit experimental viscosities of pure hydrocarbons, water and polar compounds important for the simulation of oil and natural gas systems with average absolute errors just above 5%. The implemented EF model was tested against experimental viscosity data that included hydrocarbon and aqueous mixtures with average absolutes errors of 0.7 and 6.2% respectively. Generalized expressions for the estimation interaction parameters of binary mixtures involving paraffins, naphthenes, aromatics, alcohols, glycols and water were obtained. The EF model was also applied to crude oil (bitumen) examples. The three key developments for the efficient implementation of the EF model in a commercial simulator were: (1) the appropriate selection of phase density models; (2) the automatic determination of model fluid specific parameters; and (3) the use of generalized mixing rules for the calculation of binary interaction parameters. 相似文献
