Abstract This paper describes the application of an object-oriented model of life cycle in the development of an intelligent tutoring system for secondary students in the domain of algebraic powers. The system is called EasyMath and has been developed using the Rational Unified Process, which is an object-oriented process proposed for use with the Unified Modelling Language. The Rational Unified Process supports multiple recursions of the phases of the software life cycle. The investigation of innovative Human-Computer Interfaces (HCI) provides a challenge for future multimedia research and development.
Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) exploit the ability of human communication and control bypassing the classical neuromuscular
communication channels. In general, BCIs offer a possibility of communication for people with severe neuromuscular disorders,
such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or spinal cord injury. Beyond medical applications, a BCI conjunction with exciting
multimedia applications, e.g., a dexterity game, could define a new level of control possibilities also for healthy customers
decoding information directly from the user’s brain, as reflected in electroencephalographic (EEG) signals which are recorded
non-invasively from user’s scalp. This contribution introduces the Berlin Brain–Computer Interface (BBCI) and presents setups
where the user is provided with intuitive control strategies in plausible gaming applications that use biofeedback. Yet at
its beginning, BBCI thus adds a new dimension in multimedia research by offering the user an additional and independent communication
channel based on brain activity only. First successful experiments already yielded inspiring proofs-of-concept. A diversity
of multimedia application models, say computer games, and their specific intuitive control strategies, as well as various
Virtual Reality (VR) scenarios are now open for BCI research aiming at a further speed up of user adaptation and increase
of learning success and transfer bit rates.

This paper outlines a generic evaluation methodology for multimedia and real time applications. It concentrates on the application layer and the service aspect. Principles of software evaluation for quality assessment and measurement for networked services and distributed applications are used to present a specific method for measuring important characteristics. The method and the measurement procedure allow comparison of the actual characteristics of service quality with the required characteristics and thresholds. The proof of concepts will be made by the implementation of quality measurement agents following the approach outlined in this paper. Hand signs are considered as one of the important ways to enter information into computers for certain tasks. Computers receive sensor data of hand signs for recognition. When using hand signs as computer inputs, we need to (1) train computer users in the sign language so that their hand signs can be easily recognized by computers, and (2) design the computer interface to avoid the use of confusing signs for improving user input performance and user satisfaction. For user training and computer interface design, it is important to have a knowledge of which signs can be easily recognized by computers and which signs are not distinguishable by computers. This paper presents a data mining technique to discover distinct patterns of hand signs from sensor data. Based on these patterns, we derive a group of indistinguishable signs by computers.
