Investigation into the microstructure of high performance natural materials has revealed common patterns that are pervasive across animal species. For example, the helicoid motif has gained significant interest in the biomaterials community, where recent studies have highlighted its role in enabling damage tolerance in a diverse set of animals. Moreover, the helicoid motif corresponds to a highly adaptable architecture where the control of the pitch rotation angle between fibrous structures produces large changes in its mechanical response. Nature, takes advantage of this special feature enabling an active response to particular biological needs occurring during an animal's ontogeny. In this work, we demonstrate this adaptive behavior in helicoidal architectures by performing a mechanistic analysis of the changes occurring in the cuticle of the figeater beetle (Cotinis mutabilis) during its life cycle. We complement our investigation of the beetle with the testing of 3D printing samples and a systematic analysis of the effect of pitch angle in the inherent mechanics of helicoidal architectures. Experimentation and analysis reveal improved isotropy and enhanced toughness at lower pitch angles, highlighting the flexibility of the helicoidal architecture. Moreover, trends in stiffness measurements were found to be well‐predicted by laminate theory, suggesting facile mechanics laws for use in biomimicry.  相似文献

为了提高飞机起飞和降落过程中的稳定性及安全性,采用磁流变阻尼器进行飞机前轮摆振控制。本文描绘了改进的Bouc-wen模型磁流变阻尼器的力学特性,并将之用于一个三自由度的飞机前起落架模型中,而后为此设计了减摆自抗扰控制器(active disturbance rejection control, ADRC);然后采用混沌分数阶天牛群算法整定优化自抗扰控制器的参数。最后,仿真结果显示经智能算法优化参数后的减摆自抗扰控制器能够较好地控制摆振现象,并且其性能具有一定的鲁棒性。  相似文献

针对腰部外骨骼机器人线性自抗扰控制器参数难以调整的问题,本文提出一种基于天牛须搜索的改进粒子群算法(PSO)。建立腰部外骨骼机器人模型,采用线性自抗扰控制器,进一步引入改进的PSO对其进行参数优化。该算法通过混沌初始化种群,提高粒子执行效率;采用非线性策略调整惯性因子和学习因子,加强粒子的搜索能力;引入天牛须搜索算法与PSO结合,并采用自适应权重,使得粒子可对周边环境进行较好地判断,避免粒子陷入局部最优。分别通过6个测试函数和建立系统评价指标进行仿真实验,结果表明所提出的算法有更好的收敛精度,优化后的控制器具有更好的控制性能。  相似文献

Ponderosa pine logs infested withIps paraconfusus males inhibited the attraction ofDendroctonus brevicomis in the field to either attractive logs cut from a ponderosa pine tree under attack byD. brevicomis or to their synthetic pheromones,exo-brevicomin, frontalin, and myrcene. Logs cut from trees under attack byD. brevicomis inhibited the response ofI. paraconfusus to logs infested with maleI. paraconfusus.Exo-brevicomin, frontalin, and myrcene did not inhibit their response but verbenone did. Verbenone was found in maleD. brevicomis dissected from attractive logs under attack during the same time the response ofI. paraconfusus was inhibited by these logs.Trans-verbenol andexo-brevicomin were found in femaleD. brevicomis while verbenone,trans-verbenol, and frontalin were found in maleD. brevicomis in relatively large amounts near the beginning of the aggregation phase of host colonization. All of these compounds had decreased at a similar rate 5 days later. This gradual decrease inexo-brevicomin and frontalin probably caused the observed reduction in attraction. The ecological significance of these compounds in relation to termination of the aggregation phase ofD. brevicomis and reduction of interspecific competition is discussed.Coleoptera: Scolytidae. Host location cues for parasitic wasps that attack bark beetle larvae concealed under the bark of spruce trees were analyzed by collecting odor samples from entrance holes into the bark beetle galleries, isolated larvae, and pupal chambers with or without bark beetle larvae. Odor samples were collected by dynamic headspace adsorptions on Porapak Q or static adsorptions by using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with Carbowax–divinylbenzene as the adsorbing phase. Samples were analyzed by coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antennae of Rhopalicus tutela females responded primarily to oxygenated monoterpenes that are typical for damaged host trees. These compounds are attractive to bark beetle parasitoids in long-range host location, suggesting that they are used in both long- and short-range host location. No differences could be detected between samples collected from pupal chambers with or without mature larvae. Larvae outside pupal chambers emitted low quantities of the same compounds present in empty pupal chambers. The data support the hypothesis that volatiles used by host foraging parasitoids arise from the interaction between introduced microorganisms and the bark and/or vascular tissue of the host tree rather than from the bark beetle larvae.  相似文献

European elm bark beetles,Scolytus multistriatus (Marsh.), were strongly attracted to American elms,Ulmus americana L., baited with theS. multistriatus attractant, multilure, or killed by injection of the arboricide, cacodylic acid; a combination of the two treatments was most attractive. Comparisons of beetle catches on sticky bands affixed to the trees with samples of bark from the same trees showed that the number of beetles landing on cacodylic acid-treated trees was approximately 40 times greater than the number boring into them. Spraying the bark with the insecticide chlorpyrifos had no direct effect on attraction. No live bark beetle brood was found in trees that had been treated with cacodylic acid or chlorpyrifos, but trees that were only baited or left untreated (check) were attacked, killed, and colonized. We suggest that the contribution of the cacodylic acid trap tree technique to Dutch elm disease control will be enhanced by baiting treated trees with multilure and spraying their lower boles with 0.5% chlorpyrifos. This treatment will eliminate diseased and unwanted elms as potential breeding material and kill large numbers of elm bark beetles that might otherwise innoculate healthy elms with the Dutch elm disease fungus.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterize the antennal morphology of Osmoderma eremita, a threatened scarab beetle inhabiting tree hollows. O. eremita males produce a sex pheromone, (R)‐(+)‐γ‐decalactone, responsible mainly for the attraction of females but also other males. Gross and fine morphology of microstructures including sensilla, microsculpture and pores were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy. The antenna of O. eremita showed the typical lamellicorn shape of scarab beetles, with a basal scape, a pedicel, a funicle composed of five antennomeres and a club composed of three lamellae. Six different subtypes of sensilla chaetica (Ch.1 ? 6), Böhm sensilla (Bo), one subtype of sensilla basiconica (Ba.1), two subtypes of sensilla coeloconica (Co.1 ? 2), two subtypes of sensilla placodea (Pl.1 ? 2), pores and peculiar folds were described. The two sexes did not show any significant differences in the occurrence and number of the sensilla placodea, known to be responsible for the pheromone reception. Instead, some sexual differences were found on the occurrence and topology of three different microstructures: (1) one subtype of sensillum chaeticum (Ch.2) occurring on the pedicel only in males; (2) a characteristic pore occurring on the funicle only in males; (3) a peculiar fold occurring on different antennomeres of the funicle in the two sexes, on the fourth in males and on the fifth in females. Bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) have specialized feeding habits, and commonly colonize only one or a few closely related host genera in their geographical ranges. The red turpentine beetle, Dendroctonus valens LeConte, has a broad geographic distribution in North America and exploits volatile cues from a wide variety of pines in selecting hosts. Semiochemicals have been investigated for D. valens in North America and in its introduced range in China, yielding apparent regional differences in response to various host volatiles. Testing volatiles as attractants for D. valens in its native and introduced ranges provides an opportunity to determine whether geographic separation promotes local adaptation to host compounds and to explore potential behavioral divergence in native and introduced regions. Furthermore, understanding the chemical ecology of host selection facilitates development of semiochemicals for monitoring and controlling bark beetles, especially during the process of expansion into new geographic ranges. We investigated the responses of D. valens to various monoterpenes across a wide range of sites across North America and one site in China, and used the resulting information to develop an optimal lure for monitoring populations of D. valens throughout its Holarctic range. Semiochemicals were selected based on previous work with D. valens: (R)-(+)-α-pinene, (S)-(−)-α-pinene, (S)-(−)-β-pinene, (S)-(+)-3-carene, a commercially available lure [1:1:1 ratio of (R)-(+)-α-pinene:(S)-(−)-β-pinene:(S)-(+)-3-carene], and a blank control. At the release rates used, (+)-3-carene was the most attractive monoterpene tested throughout the native range in North America and introduced range in China, confirming results from Chinese studies. In addition to reporting a more effective lure for D. valens, we present a straightforward statistical procedure for analysis of insect trap count data yielding cells with zero counts, an outcome that is common but makes the estimation of the variance with a Generalized Linear Model unreliable because of the variability/mean count dependency.  相似文献

An important defensive strategy among animals is the use of chemical compounds with toxic or irritating properties. In this paper, we report the discovery of an Early Cretaceous soldier beetle (Coleoptera: Cantharidae) in Burmese amber that seemingly employed a chemical defense response against a potential predator. Six pairs of cuticular vesicles with associated gland reservoirs were extruded from the insect’s abdomen, and a secretion released from one of these covers a portion of the antenna of a second insect species, considered to be the perpetrator of the response. This is the earliest fossil record of a putative chemical defense response and suggests that chemical defense mechanisms in beetles have been in existence for at least 100 Ma.  相似文献

Grain commodities are subjected to multiple insect infestations during processing and storage. The kharpa beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) is categorized as a destructive stored-product pest due to its elevated survival potential, preference for dry conditions and resistance to many insecticides. While public concern about pesticide related risks increases, the development of alternative, environmentally more benign disinfestation methods of stored commodities is pursued. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of three entomopathogenic nematodes, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar (Rhabditita: Heterorhabditidae), Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) (Rhabditita: Steinernematidae) and Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev) (Rhabditita: Steinernematidae) against small and large larvae of T. granarium. Suspensions of nematodes were applied at six doses: 100, 500, 1000, 5000, 10000 and 50000 infective juveniles (IJs)/ml of water on wheat at 30 °C. Mortality of larvae was estimated 4 and 8 days post-exposure to nematodes. All three entomopathogenic nematodes were able to cause mortality on the insect. High mortality rates were accomplished by the two Steinernema species. The most efficient entomopathogenic nematode against small larvae was S. feltiae which attained 98.9% mortality followed by S. carpocapsae which caused 91.1% mortality after 8 days of exposure. Similarly, S. feltiae and S. carpocapsae killed 87.8 and 63.3% of the exposed large larvae on wheat treated with 50000 IJs/ml after 8 days of exposure. In contrast, at the highest dose, H. bacteriophora was less effective than S. carpocapsae and S. feltiae since it caused 76.7 and 60.0% mortalities to exposed small and large larvae after 8 days of exposure. The effectiveness of all three entomopathogenic nematodes was increased at higher doses and longer exposures. The findings of the current study indicate that entomopathogenic nematodes are efficient biological control organisms of T. granarium larvae infesting stored-wheat.  相似文献
