Studies on film potentiometric stripping analysis: effects of electrochemical parameters

Film potentiometric stripping analysis (PSA) is a novel method for concentrating the test ion directly on a glassy carbon electrode with subsequent stripping by a chemical oxidant, the redissolution step being followed by a chronopotentiometric sequence. The electrochemical parameters governing both preconcentration and redissolution steps are studied on a rotating disk electrode: experimental results are compared with the theoretical developments recently published. Except for the influence of rde rotation rates on each step and on analytical parameters, experiments and theory are in agreement. Discrepancies concerning the rotation rate effects are studied by potentiostatic coulometry and voltammetry measurements in regard to the preconcentration step: the rotation rate effects are based on the physical behaviour of the rde. Routine analysis is carried out using film PSA, Pb(II) as the test ion and Fe(III) as oxidizing agent, in perchlorate medium.     

Preparation,characterization, and adsorption properties for metal ions of a novel chelating resin containing sulfoxide and diethylene glycol

A novel chelating resin containing sulfoxide and diethylene glycol, poly{4‐vinylbenzyl‐[2‐2‐(hydroxyethyl)ethoxyl]sulfoxide} (PVESO) was synthesized using chloromethylated polystyrene (PS‐Cl) as material. Its structure was characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adsorption capacities of the resin for Hg²⁺, Ag⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Pb²⁺ at various pH values were determined. The maximum adsorption capacities for Hg²⁺ and Ag⁺ were 1.56 and 0.75 mmol g^?1 respectively. The resin had high selectivity for Hg²⁺ and Ag⁺ over the pH range 1.0–7.0. The adsorption capacities for Hg²⁺ and Ag⁺ under competitive condition were also determined by batch experiment method. In addition, the adsorption kinetics of the resin towards Hg²⁺ at different temperatures was also investigated. The results showed that the adsorption rate was governed by film diffusion at 20°C and 25°C, by particle diffusion at 30°C and 35°C. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Prediction of liquid film mass transfer coefficients in packed columns using liquid holdup

A unique characteristic linear dimension (d), defined as the cube root of the specific liquid holdup (h_sp) in the packed column, was used to correlate successfully the liquid film mass transfer coefficient k_La for gas absorption-desorption for sparingly soluble gases in liquids below loading. To produce this simple, dimensionless correlation, k_La data reported in literature were used, covering a wide range of physical properties of liquids, packings and operating conditions. This new approach showed operating holdup as an important factor in gas liquid mass transfer.     

Carbon molecular sieve films produced by dc sputtering

This paper reports adsorption measurements that show molecular sieve effects in amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C : H) films deposited by d.c. magnetron discharge decomposition of acetylene. Adsorption of organic gases on the films is studied by using a quartz crystal microbalance technique. The sieve effect in this material depends on both deposition and annealing conditions. Films having significant molecular sieve effects are found to be typically microporous and to have a very small characteristic micropore dimension. It is suggested that the d.c. sputtered a-C : H film may be useful as a molecular sieve material in selective adsorption and gas permeation studies.
