Measurement and estimation of the lower flash points for the flammable binary systems using a Tag open cup tester

Lower flash points for flammable binary systems, ethylbenzene+n-propanol, n-propionic acid+ethylbenzene and n-propionic acid+o-xylene, were measured by Tag open cup tester. These binary solutions exhibited the minimum flash point behavior, which leads to a minimum on the flash point vs composition curve. The experimental data were compared with the values calculated by the flash point prediction models based on the van Laar and Wilson equations. As can be seen from the A.A.D., the calculated values based on the Wilson equation were found to be better than those based on the van Laar equation.

(Re-)creating Urban Destination Image: Opinions of Foreign Visitors to South Africa on Safety and Security?

The intention of tourists to visit urban destinations is influenced by their perceptions or their knowledge of that destination. Risk perceptions, although situation specific, have an impact on travel behaviour. Mega events are once-off occasions in which a negative perception of destination, in this case related to crime, can be turned into a positive image. Can the 2010 Fédération Internationale de Football Association World Cup (WC) help South Africa undo the current perceptions and opinions, especially among foreign visitors, that our cities are dangerous places to visit? Can South Africa manage the 2010 WC in such a way that the destination image can be changed to a more positive one? It is within the context of speculating about the potential impacts the event may have in 2010 on reshaping internationally (and nationally) the safety and security image that visitors have of South African cities as crime ridden that this paper aims mainly to investigate international visitors’ perceptions and opinions on safety and security. Nine hundred and seven international visitors were interviewed when exiting the country at the OR Tambo and Cape Town International airports. The findings revealed that more than a third of the respondents indicated that they were worried about their safety before travelling to South Africa, that the central business districts of Cape Town and Johannesburg are the most feared places they visited and 6% of the respondents were victims of crime. Perceptions, however, changed for the better after their visit to the country, and it is against this background that the 2010 WC can potentially show the world that the country is a safe destination to visit and in the process re-create the destination’s image as a safe tourist experience.     

基于修正Archard模型的清管器聚氨酯皮碗磨损研究

为了研究清管器聚氨酯皮碗的磨损,提出了一种数值模拟的方法。该方法基于修正的Archard模型,并结合ALE自适应网格技术和子程序Umeshmotion来实现该模型。同时为了减少计算时间使用了跳跃因数ΔN,并由仿真结果得出ΔN值为50。采用有限元试验方法模拟了聚氨酯皮碗的磨损过程,由仿真数据拟合得到磨损深度随清管器运行距离的计算公式,其结果表明:随着运行距离的增加,接触表面各位置处的磨损深度都不断增加,磨损区域的宽度在不断增加,且接触表面的轮廓逐渐趋近于水平;最大接触应力下降很快,接触表面的接触应力分布逐渐趋于均匀;接触长度不断增加,其增长率逐渐减小;由拟合公式计算得出的磨损深度值与文献中的实验结果具有一致性。     

Maps to Hack,Synchronise and Decipher: Unseen Cartographies of Rio

As a young architect in the 1990s, Gabriel Duarte , now an architecture professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, worked on the Favela-Bairro initiative. Here he describes how that experience of mapping and designing informal settlements proved formative, informing the New Cartographies research project that his practice, CAMPO, has undertaken to informally map Rio's physical and social transformations in the run up to 2016.

Micro/meso ultra precision grinding of fibre optic connectors

The present paper reports on the development of a micro/meso grinding technology using inclined resin bond diamond cup wheels for machining spherical end faces of fibre optic connectors. The ground spherical end faces obtained using the wheel of grit size of 4 μm have an average roughness (R_a) value of 7 nm in the fibre area and a profile error of below 0.4 μm. The corresponding average return and insertion losses are 55 and 0.1 dB, respectively. The results are competitive to those obtained from the polishing process that is currently used in industries. Furthermore, this study has revealed the relationships between the ground surface quality characterized by roughness and profile accuracy and the optic performance evaluated by insertion and return losses.
