Content adaptive video denoising based on human visual perception

In this paper, we propose content adaptive denoising in highly corrupted videos based on human visual perception. We introduce the human visual perception in video denoising to achieve good performance. In general, smooth regions corrupted by noise are much more annoying to human observers than complex regions. Moreover, human eyes are more interested in complex regions with image details and more sensitive to luminance than chrominance. Based on the human visual perception, we perform perceptual video denoising to effectively preserve image details and remove annoying noise. To successfully remove noise and recover the image details, we extend nonlocal mean filtering to the spatiotemporal domain. With the guidance of content adaptive segmentation and motion detection, we conduct content adaptive filtering in the YUV color space to consider context in images and obtain perceptually pleasant results. Extensive experiments on various video sequences demonstrate that the proposed method reconstructs natural-looking results even in highly corrupted images and achieves good performance in terms of both visual quality and quantitative measures.

Control of visual conditions for open-plan offices

This paper reports insights about energy savings in buildings dedicated to tertiary activity. The goal is to employ as much as possible natural light flows to minimize the artificial light source consumption. Although the solar energy is power-efficient to light and heat a room, this natural source remains complex to manage and can generate inconveniences related to occupants visual comfort. The authors propose a global solution to deal with visual comfort by controlling the daylight contribution to the indoor light atmosphere. This control structure is based on the use of an innovative sensor of light conditions and it was implemented within an experimental room equipped with classic Venetian blinds. This paper focuses on the control laws to apply in order to meet visual needs for current tasks performed in offices.     

What do architects and students perceive in their design sketches? A protocol analysis

The present research aims at examining what information architects think of and read off from their own freehand sketches, and at revealing how they perceptually interact with and benefit from sketches. We explored this in a protocol analysis of retrospective reports; each participant worked on an architectural design task while drawing freehand sketches and later reported what she/he had been thinking of during the design task. This research lies within the scope of examinations of why freehand sketches as external representation are essential for crystallizing design ideas in early design processes.
