Accurate segmentation of land regions in historical cadastral maps

Historical cadastral maps are valuable sources for historians to study social and economic background of changes in land uses or ownerships. In order to conduct large-scale historical research, it is essential to digitize the cadastral maps. As being established in antiquity, however, they suffer from significant noise artifacts attributed to hand-drawn cartography. In this paper, we propose a novel method of extracting land regions automatically in historical cadastral maps. First, we remove grid reference lines based on the density of the black pixel with the help of the jittering. Then, we remove land owner labels by considering morphological and geometrical characteristics of thinned image. We subsequently reconstruct land boundaries. Finally, the land regions of a user’s interest are modeled by their polygonal approximations. Our segmentation results were compared with manually segmented results and showed that the proposed method extracted the land regions accurately for assisting cadastral mapping in historical research.

The dynamics of MoS₂ particles in a mineral oil dispersion are studied in the same manner as reported in Part I for graphite dispersions. A Hertzian contact consisting of a steel ball in contact with a glass disk is lubricated with MoS² dispersions and observed by optical microscopy at various. slide/roll conditions. In general, the behavior of MoS₂ and graphite are similar. That is, the solids lend to enter the contact and form a film on the contacting surfaces whenever a rolling component of motion is used, but solid particles seldom enter the contact during pure sliding. MoS₂ has more pronounced plastic flow behavior than graphite. However, the polished steel ball is more readily scratched by MoS₂ than by graphite. Under the conditions of these studies, lower friction and wear are observed with pure oil rather than with the dispersions. However, under other conditions (such as different contact geometry or rougher surfaces), the solid-lubricant dispersions might be beneficial.

Towards cognitive evaluation of computer-drawn sketches

This paper seeks to raise visual comparisons beyond subjective opinions into evidence-based visual reasoning. It provides an informal deductive analysis of the marks in sketches derived with two competing line-filtering algorithms. This prompted the novel speculation that the visual system might be placing some types of anomalies in the foreground of mental 3D space, where they can be ignored. A brief survey is provided to encourage informed debate. Although the proposed cognitive computation was not automated, it justified the rejection of the Douglas–Peucker algorithm in favour of Visvalingam's algorithm in subsequent research within the Cartographic Information Systems Research Group (CISRG).

Motion segmentation of multiple translating objects from line correspondences

This paper presents an analytic approach to motion segmentation of multiple translating objects from line correspondences in three perspective views. The basic idea of our algorithm is to view the estimation of multiple translational motions as the estimation of a single, though more complex, multibody motion model that is then factored into the original models by polynomial differentiation. Experimental results on synthetic and real scenes are presented.     

Automated generation of a progress measure for the sweep-line method

In the context of Petri nets, we propose an automated construction of a progress measure which is an important pre-requisite for a state space reduction technique called the sweep-line method. Our construction is based on linear-algebraic techniques concerning the transition vectors of the Petri net under consideration. We further discuss the possible combination of the sweep-line method with other state space reduction techniques (partial order reduction, the symmetry method).
