Handwriting versus wordprocessed print: an investigation into teachers' grading of English Language and Literature essay work at 16 +

Abstract Selections of English Language and Literature CSE (now GCSE) course work essays are graded by a total of 411 teachers in two forms: handwritten and wordprocessed. Mistakes in the original handwritten versions are not edited out. It is found that the wordprocessed English Language essays are, on average, marked up a grade. However, it is found that relatively high quality English Literature work is not affected. Results suggest:
— that the less directly pupil work is specifically related to an external referent (such as a work of literature), the more likely it is that computer-assisted methods of presentation will significantly enhance its apparent quality relative to handwritten work.
— that relatively lower quality work will tend to be enhanced more than relatively higher quality work.
The implications of the results for examination boards are also considered.     

Machine translation of non-literary texts: Some Canadian experiences

A survey was carried out of past and current Canadian experiences with machine-aided translation (MAT) systems of non-literary texts in one government institution and three industrial settings. Each organization requires a great deal of translation and had conducted several experiments in the use of MAT. The survey supports positive conclusions about the prospects for expanded use of computers in translation.The authors express their thanks to all those who helped in the preparation of this paper. 针对英语教学过程中影响听力理解的语音音变问题，章分析了语音音变现象，如音的浊化、音的同化、音的不完全爆破、音的连读等等，并提出了有效可行的解决途径，帮助英语学习更好地掌握语言的交汇功能。

Since 1979, Professional Awards have been presented to individual members of the Association whose distinguished contributions have served to advance psychology as a profession in the areas of knowledge, professional practice, and public service. In 1992, Leopold Bellak received the award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Knowledge. His professional career as psychologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst encompassed seminal contributions to the fields of psychopathology, psychoanalysis, psychological testing, brief psychotherapy, and community mental health. The author of more than 200 publications, he is perhaps best known to psychologists for his work with the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) and the development of the Children's Apperception Test. Poetry I: Teaching verse with CAI

The teaching of literature through CAI raises problems of both a linguistic and instructional nature; student involvement and creativity in studying literature, and especially poetry, is difficult to build into a computer-based lesson. We have confronted these difficulties in the lessonPoetry I, which introduces undergraduates to basic concepts of poetic verse in a design using screen display, speech synthesis, and verse processing to maximize interactivity and student involvement.The lesson contains instructional modules which include the student's composition of a limerick. Computational processing of the limerick's text enables the program to offer guidance as the student composes and revises the verse and gains first-hand experience with metrical language. The significant problems inherent in processing verse are addressed by adapting Digital Equipment Corporation's DECTalk speech synthesizer as an engine converting natural language verse text into accessible strings of phonemic symbols. Although the verse processor cannot scan verse, it can interpret DECTalk's symbols reliably enough to successfully stimulate students' thinking about their verse compositions.Preliminary responses to the program have been favorable and demonstrate its effectiveness in involving students more deeply in learning about poetic verse. This suggests that the techniques of verse processing prototyped inPoetry I might be usefully extended to other types of verse and levels of study.W. An information-theoretic approach to the written transmission of old English

Information theory offers a means for analyzing some constraints on the reading and copying process in Old English. Entropy for strings of various lengths offers a baseline measure of the uncertainty involved in transmission of Old English texts, while avoiding the pitfalls of applying models of modern reading to early medieval practice. Analysis of lengthy prose and verse texts in Old English revealed uniformly high values for entropy at all string lengths. High entropies may be the result of the language's irregular orthography, poetic koiné, and several dialects and imply that the language may have been easy to write but difficult to read. The low redundancy of the language which its high entropy values indicate suggests that the reader of Old English played an enhanced role in decoding a text and may provide an explanation for the high variability in the transmission of Old English verse.Katherine O'Brien O 'Keeffe is Professor of English at Texas A&M University and a co-director of its Interdisciplinary Group for Historical Literary Study.William Rundell is Professor of Mathematics at Texas A&M University.
