In addition to material, spatial and thermal standards and norms that influence the resource intensity of home environments, a key indicator of the environmental impact related to housing is found in residents’ ways of life. Of interest to the study presented in this paper is how residents’ perceptions of home and living standards relate to opinions on environmental issues and the reduction of resource use, exploring the potential and willingness to engage in low-impact ways of living. Empirical material from a questionnaire (n = 156) and interview study (n = 22) with residents in a tenant-owned housing association in Sweden provides insights into conventions and perceptions surrounding practices primarily linked to voluntary simplicity, living smaller as well as sharing spaces and resources. The study emphasizes the need for understanding residents’ perspectives and the implications this might have for targeting the resource intensity of homes in future development and policy. 相似文献

A negotiation support system for resolving an international trans-boundary natural resource conflict
Post-Soviet legal governance regime of Caspian Sea – the largest inland body of water on earth – remains a source of conflict among the five coastal states of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan. Although different division methods have been suggested for sharing the sea and its valuable resources, the actual gain of the countries is unclear as the proposed methods focus either on the oil and gas or the areal share of the parties. The Caspian Sea Negotiation Support System (Caspian Sea NSS) is developed in this study to delineate optimal boundaries for sharing the sea through simultaneous consideration of the countries' areal and resource shares under different sharing methods. This NSS is a complex optimization model, with a solver engine that provides reliable results with a reasonable computational effort using a heuristic method. The model is run under different division scenarios to evaluate the sensitivity of each party's gain and locations of nautical boundaries to the division rules and the economic values of the resources. Results show a high sensitivity of the optimal nautical boundaries to the division rules and an indirect relationship between the allocated area and resource shares. The findings highlight the necessity for considering utility shares in negotiations as opposed to adopting areal division rules which ignore the utilities and might result in unfair resource allocation. The main policy implication of the study is that clarification of the countries' resource and areal gain under any suggested legal regime for governing the Caspian Sea is essential to the success of the negotiations. 相似文献

AbstractGiven that healthcare costs in the U.S. continue to climb, engineering managers can help address this situation by identifying designs for cost savings. Using discrete-event simulation, the layout of four different healthcare clinic scenarios considered in a redesign program named Patient Aligned Care Teams were studied. Model 1 is an existing layout in many clinics and Model 2 is staff-centered, while Models 3 and 4 provide additional space including common hallway(s). Our main conclusion is that Model 4 reduces patient travel distances and average queueing waits, while also providing the best privacy in accordance with HIPAA and the most security for the staff. 相似文献

A procedure for planning and resources’ management in intermodal terminals is presented. It integrates Timed Petri Nets (TPNs) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and consists of three steps: the terminal modeling via TPNs to model the regular behavior; the evaluation of whether the current configuration may cope with increased freight flows; if not, the analysis by cross-efficiency DEA of alternative planning solutions. The procedure provides the decision maker with number, capacity, and schedule of resources to tackle the flows increase. The method is evaluated by a real case study, showing that integrating TPNs and DEA allows taking planning decisions under conflicting requirements. 相似文献

Analysing performances for future improvement and resource planning is a key management function. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) provides an analytical mean for performance modelling without assuming parametric functions. Multiple Objective Optimisation (MOO) is well-suited for resource planning. This paper reports an investigation in exploring relationships between DEA and MOO models for equivalent efficiency analysis in a MOO process. It is shown that under certain conditions minimax reference point models are identical to input-oriented dual DEA models for performance assessment. The former can thus be used for Hybrid Efficiency and Trade-off Analyses (HETA). In this paper, these conditions are first established and the equivalent models are explored both analytically and graphically to better understand HETA. Further investigation in the equivalence models leads to the modification of efficiency measures and the development of a minimax reference point approach for supporting integrated performance analysis and resource planning, with the Decision Maker’s (DM) preferences taken into account in an interactive fashion. The continuously growing number of applications competing for resources in current communication networks highlights the necessity for efficient resource allocation mechanisms to maximize user satisfaction. Optimization Theory can provide the necessary tools to develop such mechanisms that will allocate network resources optimally and fairly among users. The aim of this paper is to provide a starting point for researchers interested in applying optimization techniques in the resource allocation problem for current communication networks. To achieve that we, first, describe the fundamental optimization theory tools necessary to design optimal resource allocation algorithms. Then, we describe the Network Utility Maximization (NUM) framework, a framework that has already found numerous applications in network optimization, along with some recent advancements of the initial NUM framework. Recently there has been a new emerging trend in integrating Information Centric Networking (ICN) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) together in the future Internet research area. Software defined information centric networking (SD-ICN) may face more serious scalability problem in control plane compared with traditional SDN environment due to new features about in-network caching and content-based communication. In this paper, we propose a scalable area-based hierarchical architecture (SAHA) for intra-domain communication to address the control plane scalability problem in SD-ICN. The SAHA supports scalable awareness of network resources and content resources, as well as guarantees efficient interest matching and resource adaptation. A first-rate e-Health system saves lives, provides better patient care, allows complex but useful epidemiologic analysis and saves money. However, there may also be concerns about the costs and complexities associated with e-health implementation, and the need to solve issues about the energy footprint of the high-demanding computing facilities. This paper proposes a novel and evolved computing paradigm that: (i) provides the required computing and sensing resources; (ii) allows the population-wide diffusion; (iii) exploits the storage, communication and computing services provided by the Cloud; (iv) tackles the energy-optimization issue as a first-class requirement, taking it into account during the whole development cycle.
