Investigations on the monolayer structure of thiol SAMs and the influence of conjugated π-bonds on the electronic molecular conductivity

Thiols have been in the focus of recent research because of their capability to form self assembled monolayers (SAM) on noble and semi-noble metals opening a new field of fundamental research and its application in various branches, as e.g. in nano technology. In this paper, the investigation of SAMs of six specially tailored thiols with an aromatic head group on a preferentially (1 1 1) orientated Au-surface are described with special interest in their structure and the electronic conductivity in dependence on the number of conjugated π-bonds in the chain group. Potentiodynamic polarization curves in 0.5 M KOH with and without [Fe(CN)₆]^3−/4− were used to obtain information on the quality and conductivity of the SAMs while scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and XPS were used for investigations on the monolayer structure. Additionally molecular dynamic calculations were performed to check the possibility and reliability of these calculations to predict the arrangement of the thiol molecules within the SAMs. The electron conductivity of these SAMs rises significantly with the amount of conjugated π-bonds. A naphthalene head group causes the formation of SAMs with a typical herringbone structure whereas anthraquinone leads to a mixture of parallel and herringbone arrangements.     

A new model of job design: Initial evidence and implications for future research

Clegg and Spencer's (2007) model of job design synthesizes and extends recent conceptions of the job design process by incorporating variables such as knowledge, motivation, and trust into a cyclical and dynamic system. The objective of this study was to examine the sequential organization of variables that comprise the model, as a basis from which to justify further investigations of the model's dynamic properties. Data were collected via questionnaires from 432 participants in two work organizations. Results obtained from structural equation modeling are broadly supportive of the proposed relationships between the variables. Implications of this initial study for future research and practice are discussed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Adaptive receding horizon control for constrained MIMO systems

An adaptive control algorithm for open-loop stable, constrained, linear, multiple input multiple output systems is presented. The proposed approach can deal with both input and output constraints, as well as measurement noise and output disturbances. The adaptive controller consists of an iterative set membership identification algorithm, that provides a set of candidate plant models at each time step, and a model predictive controller, that enforces input and output constraints for all the plants inside the model set. The algorithm relies only on the solution of standard convex optimization problems that are guaranteed to be recursively feasible. The experimental results obtained by applying the proposed controller to a quad-tank testbed are presented.

Extracting significant Website Key Objects: A Semantic Web mining approach

Web mining has been traditionally used in different application domains in order to enhance the content that Web users are accessing. Likewise, Website administrators are interested in finding new approaches to improve their Website content according to their users' preferences. Furthermore, the Semantic Web has been considered as an alternative to represent Web content in a way which can be used by intelligent techniques to provide the organization, meaning, and definition of Web content. In this work, we define the Website Key Object Extraction problem, whose solution is based on a Semantic Web mining approach to extract from a given Website core ontology, new relations between objects according to their Web user interests. This methodology was applied to a real Website, whose results showed that the automatic extraction of Key Objects is highly competitive against traditional surveys applied to Web users.

Using self-organizing maps to model turnover of sales agents in a call center

This paper proposes an approach for modeling employee turnover in a call center using the versatility of supervised self-organizing maps. Two main distinct problems exist for the modeling employee turnover: first, to predict the employee turnover at a given point in the sales agent's trial period, and second to analyze the turnover behavior under different performance scenarios by using psychometric information about the sales agents. Identifying subjects susceptible to not performing well early on, or identifying personality traits in an individual that does not fit with the work style is essential to the call center industry, particularly when this industry suffers from high employee turnover rates. Self-organizing maps can model non-linear relations between different attributes and ultimately find conditions between an individual's performance and personality attributes that make him more predisposed to not remain long in an organization. Unlike other models that only consider performance attributes, this work successfully uses psychometric information that describes a sales agent's personality, which enables a better performance in predicting turnover and analyzing potential personality profiles that can identify agents with better prospects of a successful career in a call center. The application of our model is illustrated and real data are analyzed from an outbound call center.
