Higher testosterone levels are related to assertiveness and dominance. Given the relevance of those behavioral correlates to spouses' daily transactions, links between testosterone levels and marital interaction were explored among 92 newlywed couples. Marital problem-solving and social support transactions were assessed, and saliva was collected and assayed for testosterone. Whether marital behavior was related to husbands' and wives' testosterone levels was examined. The link between spouses' testosterone and their behavior was contingent on the partner's testosterone levels. Husbands exhibited more adaptive problem-solving behaviors and social support provision when husbands and wives were concordant for lower testosterone levels. In contrast, wives exhibited more adaptive support provision when spouses had discordant testosterone levels such that wives had higher levels and husbands had lower levels. Since the launch of the ENVISAT satellite in 2002, the Radar Altimetry Mission provides systematic observations of the Earth topography. Among the different goals of the ENVISAT Mission, one directly concerns land hydrology: the monitoring of the water levels of lakes, wetlands, and rivers. The ENVISAT Geophysical Data Records products contain, over different type of surfaces, altimeter ranges derived from four specialized algorithms or retrackers. However, none of the retrackers are intended to the processing of the radar echoes over continental waters. A validation study is necessary to assess the performances of the different ENVISAT-derived water levels to monitor inland waters. We have selected four test-zones over the Amazon basin to achieve this validation study. We compare first the performances of these retracking algorithms to deliver reliable water levels for land hydrology. Comparisons with in-situ gauge stations showed that Ice-1 algorithm, based on the Offset Centre of Gravity technique, provides the more accurate water stages. Service life planning comprises a model for the determination of a reasonable expected service life for buildings and components, and it establishes a routine for the assessment of design alternatives. A design option is considered reasonable when it meets or exceeds performance requirements over time that have been drawn up specifically for the specific project. Due to this assessment reference, there is a very evident link to the concept of performance-based building. Any stakeholder involved in the value chain or in the design process of the building, as well as regulators and building users, can express performance requirements. Identified requirements, both in relevance and in quality, will vary with the stakeholder and his/her perspective of interest. As building sector manufacturers develop most products with reference to standards rather than with reference to specific requirements, there is no direct link from user requirements to the product design. Instead, the building designer has the responsibility to ensure performance requirements are met by the performance of products integrated into the design. As these design decisions also have to be made at the material and component level, a performance-based building would benefit from an established rationale that enables the communication of performance requirements across the relevant system levels in the relevant design processes. A path for the connection of the established concepts of service life planning and performance-based building is presented. On Great Lakes dunes, the link between foredune dynamics and coastal processes is seen in dune responses to changing lake levels. This paper investigates foredune dynamics during a recent period of rising and high lake levels. The study location was an active foredune in P.J. Hoffmaster State Park on the east coast of Lake Michigan, where field data were collected from 2000 through the final destruction of the foredune by wave removal in November 2019. Foredune dynamics were studied with erosion pins, direct observations, photographs, mapping, and on-site wind measurements. Regional climate and lake-level data were obtained from established data collection programs. The response of the foredune to rising lake levels was compared to several models of foredune behavior. During the study, the Lake Michigan-Huron level rose 1.89 m from January 2013 to July 2020. After an early transitional period, foredune activity was characterized by scarp retreat (4–19 m per year) and dune narrowing from 2014 to 2019. When the foredune completely disappeared in November 2019, erosion/scarping began on the next landward dune. The foredune activity fits Olson’s (1958) model for foredune growth and erosion through lake-level cycles. The foredune migration predicted by the revised Davidson-Arnott (2021) model of foredune response to relative water level rise did not occur, most likely because the rate of lake-level rise was too high. The six years of foredune narrowing before wave erosion started affecting the next landward dune represent a time-lag in Lake Michigan dune history models of increased dune activity during high lake-level stands. 相似文献
