Age-related response of male melon fliesDacus cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae) to cue-lure

Laboratory-reared and wild adults of the melon fly,Dacus cucurbitae Coquillett, were tested for response to cue-lure at various ages. Virgin laboratory (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 days old) and wild (10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, and 22 days old) flies were released into outdoor field cages and trapped from 0800 until 1600 hr. Response of males to cue-lure increased with age and corresponded with sexual maturity for each strain. Females of both strains were relatively nonresponsive to cue-lure. Failure to eradicate in past male annihilation programs againstD. cucurbitae may be explained in part by the fact that only older males, which may have already mated with gravid females, respond to cue-lure.     

Effect of temperature on methyl radical generation over Sr/La2O3 catalysts

The role of gas phase CH₃ radicals in the oxidative coupling of CH₄ over 1 wt% Sr/La₂O₃ is supported by the observations that (i) this is a very effective catalyst for the generation of CH₃ · radicals and (ii) the concentration of CH₃ · radicals increases with temperature over the range of 450 °C–800 °C.

Efficient modeling of panel-like structures in perforation simulations

This paper presents results of numerical simulations for impact effects in panel-like structures using solid and shell element modeling techniques. Three examples from experiments in literature have been numerically analyzed. The nonlinear transient dynamic analysis code, LS-DYNA is used in the simulations to model projectiles and panel-like targets. It is found that models established for panel-like targets using solid shell elements cannot only save significant computational effort, but also produce good results as long as the panel-like targets satisfy certain conditions. A criterion that governs the validity of modeling panel-like targets with shell elements is proposed in the paper.     

Suboptimal Exposure to Facial Expressions When Viewing Video Messages From a Small Screen: Effects on Emotion, Attention, and Memory.

The authors examined the effects of suboptimally presented facial expressions on emotional and attentional responses and memory among 39 young adults viewing video (business news) messages from a small screen. Facial electromyography (EMG) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia were used as physiological measures of emotion and attention, respectively. Several congruency priming effects were found. In particular, happy facial primes prompted increased (a) pleasure ratings, (b) orbicularis oculi EMG activity, (c) perceived trustworthiness, and (d) recognition memory for video messages with a positive emotional tone. Emotional and other responses to video messages presented on a small screen can be modified with suboptimal affective primes, but even small differences in the emotional tone of the messages should be allowed for. 我国的西气东输工程从新疆塔里木油田到上海，管线长度达4000公里，为确保对长江三角洲地区安全稳定的供气，就必须在长江三角洲地区建设地下储气库，从而保证在管线故障期间应急供气，同时利用地下储气库调节冬季和夏季用气量的差异，保证长输管线的高效、平稳运行。在长江三角洲地区经地库址选择，目前准备将常州盆地的金坛盐矿用以建设地下储气库。盐穴地下储气库主要选择在盐层或盐兵上，利用水溶方式形成地下溶腔进行储气，选择合适的建库地址要结合地质、水、工程等诸多因素，造腔过程中需要采取一系列控制技术，在造腔过程中还要及时采取声纳测井技术进行跟踪监测，造腔过程的检测及腔体完成后的密封安全性检测是气库能否投入运行的关键。     

"Learning myopia: An adaptive recency effect in category learning": Correction to Jones and Sieck (2003).

Reports an error in "Learning myopia: An adaptive recency effect in category learning" by Matt Jones and Winston R. Sieck (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2003[Jul], Vol 29[4], 626-640). On page 633, Table 2, the values in columns (T, P) and (P, T) in the dual condition row incorrectly read .10 and .90, respectively. The correct values are .90 and .10, respectively. Recency effects (REs) have been well established in memory and probability learning paradigms but have received little attention in category learning research. Extant categorization models predict REs to be unaffected by learning, whereas a functional interpretation of REs, suggested by results in other domains, predicts that people are able to learn sequential dependencies and incorporate this information into their responses. These contrasting predictions were tested in 2 experiments involving a classification task in which outcome sequences were autocorrelated. Experiment 1 showed that reliance on recent outcomes adapts to the structure of the task, in contrast to models' predictions. Experiment 2 provided constraints on how sequential information is learned and suggested possible extensions to current models to account for this learning. Studies on the dielectric and relaxor behavior of sol-gel derived barium strontium zirconate titanate thin films

The dielectric behavior of sol-gel derived Ba_0.80Sr_0.20(Zr_xTi_1−x)O₃ (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.50) thin films is studied. A relaxor behavior is observed for x ≥ 0.35. The degree of relaxation increases with Zr content. The frequency dependence of the polar regions follows Vogel-Fulcher relation with a characteristic cooperative freezing at freezing temperature (T_f). Below T_f, a long range polarization ordering is likely to take place. The plausible mechanism of the relaxor behavior of BSZT thin films with Zr contents ≥ 0.35 has been proposed based on the measured temperature as well as frequency dependent dielectric data. The solid solution system is visualized as a mixture of Ti^+ 4 rich polar regions and Zr^+ 4 rich regions; with the increase in Zr content the volume fraction of the polar regions is progressively reduced. At and above 35.0 at.% Zr substitution the polar regions exhibit typical relaxor behavior.     

Amphetamine-like discrimination stimulus effects of ephedrine and its stereoisomers in pigeons.

This study assessed the discriminative stimulus effects of (±)-ephedrine and its stereoisomers in pigeons discriminating 1.0 mg/kg of amphetamine from saline. Amphetamine, (±)-, (-)-, and (+)-ephedrine, and cocaine occasioned greater than 80% drug-key responding with the following rank order of potency: amphetamine > cocaine > (-)-ephedrine ≥ (±)-ephedrine ≥ (+)-ephedrine. Neither the α-adrenergic antagonist, phentolamine, nor the β-adrenergic antagonist, propranolol, antagonized the effects of amphetamine or (±)-ephedrine. In contrast, the dopamine receptor antagonist, haloperidol, antagonized the discriminative stimulus effects of amphetamine and (±)-ephedrine as well as those of (-)- and (+)-ephedrine. These results indicate that, like cocaine, (±)-ephedrine and its stereoisomers share discriminative stimulus effects with amphetamine.
